Ask Sci-fest Voting And Viewing Questions Here

Well, no lynx's in captivity.

Some say it's only a legend, some say simply easily-explained phenomena.

I say it's just a weather balloon, but that's just me. :)

OK. Now I'm confused... I've downloaded 23 films. But now there are only 20 up there...

Bad ones being re-uploaded?

Can you mark them somehow as "new", or will you make me figger it out on my own?

Barry, do you know why my short, "DISTRACTION," looks all stuttery? Should I re-encode and re-submit? The original uploaded MPG plays fine on my home PC. I do have some mixed 60i in with the 24PA footage--is that the cause?

it looks to me like all the films are doing that
Hmmm . . . everyone else's shorts I've viewed play fine. Only mine plays "stuttery." I'm viewing it on Windows Media Playe 9--lemme try viewing it in Windows Media Player 10 on my other PC . . . (Thanks, EditPhish).

NBC- Your film looked perfectly fine on my computer, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Jarred rendered the films mostly in Vegas, so maybe there are some properties of the WMV's that are handled better or worse depending on the viewer's computer.

In my computer, every movie gets truncated by the middle in Quicktime. If I play them with Windows Media Player, they all look stuttery and pixelated.
Don't misunderstand me, I appreciate the effort you're doing by rendering all films with same compression, but ¿why wmv? I think the h.264 codec has a better relation of quality/size and can be seen with the same good quality on both windows and apple computers.

I have a fast machine, a Quad Core G5, I don´t know why wmv files look so bad. Can anyone help me? Maybe there's another player for Mac that can do it? Or any codec?

Thanks again, Barry and Jarred, I know you're doing a great effort with this.

Pablo

Barry, sorry for all the complaints, I've just read about the plan B.
I know you had to do "something" with all the movies. It's just that I wanted so much to see the films that these technical problems made me a little impatient.

Question for Barry

OK, voting procedure :

1. Rename Excel document to Username_ballot.xls

2. Mark movies

3. Return Excel document via email... but to which address exactly ?

(Maybe I missed something)

For the record, my home PC played the movies (at elast the half-dozen I've managed to get watched) fine, while my work mac stuttered. Though this is a fairly old machine, it may just not have been able to handle it.

The ballots should be returned to contact@dvxuser.com.
Re:encoding WMV is a widely accepted and high quality codec for web delivery. I agree that h.264 is also excellent, but Jarred had to pick one format. At this point Jarred has offered to re-encode any individual film with problems, but it's not practical to re-encode all of the files. For the small number of people having consistent problems with all the files, perhaps you can burn some DVD's and try watching on a different machine.

even better.. if you guys think you can make better wmv's then here you go:

ok everyone.. im gonna make this alot easier on everyone.

Im opening up the FTP access for you guys to upload wmv's of your flicks if you wanna do them better.

YOU HAVE TILL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT PST time, to get them in. That is the absolute cut-off.

go check your film out at http://64.38.14.46/scifest/

remember the file name of your film, you need to name your "replacement" wmv the exact same.

FILE REQUIREMENTS:

size: 436x240
frame rate: 23.976 or 24p native
bitrate: 1M

FTP info:

host : dvxuser.com
username: scifest@dvxuser.com
password: scifest

I'm sorry, Jarred, I didn't mean the wmv's were incorrectly done, I'm sure they have the best possible compression, I just don't like too much the wmv format itself (you know, I'm one of these weird apple maniacs and I don`t have any PC at home)

I'm absolutely sure I can't do a better wmv, I'll just try and burn a DVD to see the movies, as Barry proposes.

Don't get mad at me, please, I repeat I know you must be sooo stressed with all the rendering, the batch processing and everything that our complaints don't help too much.

And yes, I agree with Barry, if the majority can see the films correctly, maybe it isn't worth to change the whole system.

Besides, my PC-friends will be very, very happy to hear from me: "Can I go to your place to see some short movies? My Mac can't handle them." :)

Jarred, you are doing a great job, don't get discouraged because of whining greens like me.

Pablo

I've got the H.264 version with the same settings (436x240,24p) with 41 Mb, but I guess it's preferrable every film has the same .wmv format, isn't it?
