AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Is there a list as to who contributed to in this panel? Out of curiosity, I would be interested in knowing who were the heavy hitters part of this....

No it would not be appropriate to name-drop. Those that are on this list that wish to disclose can of course disclose, the rest get to keep their privacy.

Best,

Jan

Fair enough. I just thought it would be cool to see who was involved....kinda when companies roll out a product and they name-drop and everyone goes "wow...well if this or that were involved then it must be an awesome product"

But I totally understand the privacy part...plus I don't think that name dropping will add to the fact that we all know that this camera is going to be something else

51 pages to look through??? There has to be a better way.
Does the auto focus track subjects for you?

There is only one lens that will do this and it is the 14140 lens. Not sure how good it is, I think I get one toward the end of next week. Will post once we have tested.

But will the 4:2:0 progressive recording look good or not-so-good/awful once put to DVD, Barry?
You're still going to be in a position of substantial oversampling. DVD is 4:2:0. So even in a case of 4:2:0 source HD footage, you're going to have more than enough color to be working at 4:4:4 when considering DVD resolution.

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I have not found it. Do the 2 SDHC slots allow you to do redundant recording, recording the same material to two cards at once? To lower chance of card failurez?

This would be a really good use of the cards especially since most people have no need for 12 hours of continuous shooting.

In the next couple of years when the high speed SDXC cards come out (>100MB/s) it would also be great to record AVCHD onto one card and uncompressed onto the other. Ultimately that could be a very clean way to do proxy editing of raw files.

Guys this truly sounds like the camera for me. All of the specs sound AWESOME. After speaking with my business partner I was given the go ahead for a Feb 15 purchase. So I can't wait.

Good to see you Jimmy. Ill be using my AF with some pretty Zeiss glass... wonder where I got those from again.

barry,

again, thanx for all the information, you said you try your zeiss lenses
on the af 101,did the lenses have the nikon mount and if so,which
adapter do you use?

I believe that yes, it will, when used in face-detect autofocus mode. Needs to be verified, but I think that's exactly what it was designed for.
how does that work? is it only faces? can it track objects too?
I put this on the wishlist along with a touchscreen but of course touchscreen is a hail mary suggestion but im glad theres atleast a form of auto tracking

Mine are Nikon mount, and I did use an adapter. The particular adapter I was using was the FotoDiox, but I don't recommend it. While it worked okay, the release pin has now fallen out, so ... it was cheap, and -- cheap is as cheap does. I'll be replacing it with a CameraQuest/Voigtlander and see if that performs better.

The face-detection autofocus is just that, face detection. It "knows" what a face is, and can detect faces in a shot and prioritize focus to keep a face in focus. Let's keep in mind here that I'm basing my guesses (and these are guesses) on the AF100's face-detect autofocus performance based on how the HMC40/HMC80 work. With them you can track focus with a face, and I believe the AF100 will be able to do the same. I know the menu options were in there.

Can't wait.

I'm gonna shoot everything I see at 60fps :)

My wife taking a sip of coffee. : "Luvie! Stop filming me!"
"But baby.. it's 60fps! EVERYTHING looks cool at 60fps!"

LOL, good to hear from you as well Noel.

As you know I was seeing RED, RED, and more RED. But now I think when I factor in all the variables AF is the way to go.

barry,

i'm really fighting with myself...i'm using right now the hpx 171 with an
sg pro 35 adapter and some zeiss lenses which gives me a nice picture
with the problem of loosing light and a heavy rig, what is important for
me is the picture quality and not the codec, although dvcpro hd is fine,
what can you say about the quality of this avchd codec in terms of
the picture?i can't believe that panasonic is going one step back with
this cam using 'just' avchd and not dvcpro hd /p2,what do you think?

I'm not Barry, but…

I've used the HPX/HVX cameras extensively, along with the newer HMC (AVCCAM) products. When I look at the DVCPRO-HD footage from the HPX-170 next to the AVCCAM footage from the HMC-40, there's just no comparison. The AVCCAM footage is much more detailed, which certainly has to do with the full-raster chips. But I also haven't noticed any AVCHD-based degradation of the footage, either in macroblocking or artefacting.

Would AVC-Intra be "better" than AVCCAM? Sure. There's a reason it's in the highest level of Panasonic's Broadcast lineup. But based on what I've seen and shot, AVCCAM is in no way a step down from DVCPRO-HD.
