AF100 / AF101 - initial report

Welcome to the forum, Filippo! Interesting that you used a nanoflash, can we assume that you're happy with the quality of the footage you received using that combination?

Hi Barry,

thanks!
Yes, I'm happy with the quality of the footage.
I used my Nanoflash at 100 Mbps I-frame.
Unfortunately I can't show the images because the camera was not the definitive one.

Filippo, Keeping in mind the non-finalized camera, what were your specific thoughts on the image compared to the usual DSLR image?

I'm going to bet that the 24VBR will still look great, though i really do hope they up it to 35VBR, then at least producers who have worked with the EX1/3 will have something to relate to and not get turned off. i do always hate to explain to producers mpeg2vs4

The AG-AF100 has a sensor similar to a DSLR, so the DOF is like the 7D one with a big plus: no moiré, no aliasing.
The new Pany is cheaper than the EX3; at the same price you can also buy a terrific external recorder.

I attended DV Expo today and sat through the AG-AF100 presentation by Jan Crittenden. I had my GH1 with me and snapped photos of her presenting the charts with intent to post them here. After the presentation, I asked Jan for permission to post my shots of the slides here on DVXUser. To my surprise, she offered to give me the original presentation file! So, attached to this message are a picture of Jan presenting the first slide and a link to the entire presentation converted to a PDF for everyone to read. Thank You, Jan, for your GREAT support of the DVXUser community!!!

There was a Q&A session after the presentation, but most of the questions that Jan answered have already been covered by Barry and Jan here on DVXUser. I asked a specific question about whether there will be remote control of focus on Lumix lenses. Jan's answer was "that will be a tough one" which I interpret to mean that it will most likely not be on the camera. Her presentation did say that remote start/stop and aperture control will be included. Other than that, you can read the rest for yourself below. There are a few new nuggets in the presentation, including the new official price of $5,000.

Thanks for a Good Show!!!

Thanks for asking. At least they are aware of our want for focus control. Seems like a huge omission to me. I don't get why they would include iris but not focus.

AF100 LIST Price - Taking orders now!

AF100 LIST Price - Taking orders now!

Hold the horses, guys. I do not believe this is accurate. I will check, but as far as I know there has been NO announcement of a US list price!

There has been a MSRP set at $4995.00 in the US, and TapeWorks Texas is actively taking orders on this camera (Body Only) at the sale price of $4795.00.

Here's the product page http://bit.ly/AGAF100

TapeWorks Texas is an Authorized Dealer of Panasonic We have 3 slots available right now - and will expand our stocking order as needed.

EDIT - as of 16:17 CST, 10/1/10 - only have three spots left...

(I hope that I'm not out of line - I'm not here to spam the boards, but I know that these spaces in line are going to go fast!)

You know it is funny but my hair tends to be the most outstanding feature in a crowd. A buddy of mine was looking at some pictures from IBC and he saw the back of my head and said to himself, There's Jan.

Anyhow I am back home and it was a great show.

I just want to comment on the need to remotely focus, you can do it but it just won't happen through the camera unless it is an autofocus thing. Think how would they do it on a film camera and you will be close to the answer.

BTW, I love this little camera. It is going to break my heart to have to send her back to Japan on Monday.

Best,

Jan

Jan,

Curious why the camera can control the motors in a lens for auto-focus, but can't respond to an input through an electronic (Focus/Iris) control port?

I know very little about exactly how focus control works between cameras and still camera lenses. Perhaps you could enlighten?

- Mikko ... also spots Jan at a distance by her hair. :)

I don't understand the limitation of why it is so hard to put in remote focus control? For instance, the 5D has autofocus (I believe using 2 methods just like the 7D) yet, the Magic Lantern people were able to hack the firmware to allow (at least in their tests) the ability to do rack focus with the lens. While not available yet, the same feature is also perported to work with lenses on the Epic as well, being able to rack focus on Canon lenses in that case.

And I guess this is the case now, with confirmation, then I hope Birger does add some remote focus capabilities.

Jan, your hair may be the most outstanding feature in a crowd, but your knowledge, accessibility and responsiveness are your outstanding features here.
Thank you.

AMEM !!!

I am not talking about the camera controlling with motors, I am talking about external controls that have motors. How people get film cameras to work is how this will work. They attach motors to the rail and lens and then the control is run back to the operator.

Hey Jan,

How adjustable is the white balance? Is there just the three basic presets plus the AWB button, or can we dial in a custom temperatures, sort of like how you can do it on the Canon 5D and 7D?

I´m in love with the AF100, but for me the only minor drawback is the lack of in body stabilization, cause we gonna use a lot of manual lens, and the only stabilized lens out there are panys m4/3 lens with OIS, and aren´t too great. This will be a nice guerilla camera and a lot of handheld shot will be used.

I guess there will be coming better lenses from panasonic for the AF100, maybe a 70-200 f2.8 like the Olympus... but with OIS...pleaseeee.

Thanks Jan for been so kindly with your answers.

Sorry for my english
