'Aetas' - an Epic Medieval Tale

could always use abit more time but still 6 mins works the same, just had to cut a few lines, and tighten stuff a bit but got the meat and potatoes into the short.

I'm with you Shawn! When I edited the first version of our film I think it was around 10-11 minutes. I was like, "How the heck am I possibly gonna get this down to 6-minutes and have it make sense?"

I did it eventually...and I actually like the 6-minute version. I just had to cut out relatively huge chunks in the process!

I still want to do the "full-length" version eventually just because there are some good moments from the actors...better story development etc. But I think the 6-minute version will definitely be tighter! For better or for worse...

Did you have to actually cut out much content Shawn or is it more just having to "tighten" the pacing?

6 minutes ain't much time for an EPIC tale. It's enough time for a few closely connected scenes. Short film concepts don't always make for good long form concepts, and good long form concepts don't always allow for good short films. It's like trying to adapt a big novel into a 90 minute movie.

Shawn, if your story really is "epic" you're gonna have to make this a trailer. Or very surreal. Or tell one part of the story that can have a satisfying ending in such little screen-time. I don't think you can do much epic storytelling in 6 minutes. It's enough time for epic imagery though. :-)

Hadn't seen some of those images, Shawn. Man, I do hope you have your high-res version ready to upload to VIMEO as soon as the voting is over. Truly these are "epic" images. You are blessed to have access to some of the most beautiful geography in the country.

I trimmed a whole shoot day when I realized I had 120gb of footage after just four days! That said, the pacing is very tight. I've done about a dozen shorts so I knew back in the writing that it had to be tight.

It is epic, it is not a trailer. Wait and see :-)

Wow, thanks Mark! Now I just re read the rules and there is nothing in there against me hosting a nice 200mb 720p version the moment the contest opens.

We're all giddy like schoolgirls about these shots, too.

Teaser: We will post the prop-making how-to's of these shots after screening. And no, the props will not be robotic sheep. Even better!

Man, what a golden find... 22 seconds is an eternity in a short. Nice. :engel017:

Yeah, about halfway through, we thought we were over the 6 minute mark. It's amazing how much you can get back by tightening up the shots and tweaking a little here and there. It was a constant refining process and got us some extra time. We were pleased with the results. :)

For those interested in such things: Aetas was made using 100% natural lighting (sun & fire) and a reflector. Not a single artificial light (tungsten, fluoro, led, hmi, etc.) was used.

So should we say "Grip & Electric: God" ? :-D
