FinalCut - Potools Integration?

Is there a way to export the timeline of Final Cut Pro to Protools? I dont just want to export the tracks individually, but all clips and also be able to access, the audio i cut/trimmed in final cut. So i am for example able to blend between two audio clips in Protools?

Basically i am asking if there is an Intergration with Protools just like Avid and Protools or maybe similar?

thx

I have done this just one time and it was quite a while ago so I can't give you all the details.

You can export from FCP via OMF just as you would with the AVID. It will open up in ProTools as a PT "Playlist" which is ProTools version of a timeline. It will have all the seperate audio pieces which are now ProTools "Regions" with whatever handles you designate when you export from FCP. I don't think levels or panning carry across.

I believe "levels" is what Auto Duck's "Pro Export FCP" adds to the mix. It may also be that the FCP export only allows you to export as a folder full of audio files and an OMF project file (the old method), whereas AD Pro Export seems to allow you to embed everything into one file as you can from most reasonably new AVIDs.

The ProTools system must have DigiTranslator to import OMF. If the ProTools system is LE, such as a Digi002, then it must have Digitranslator purchased as an upgrade. Most people who have this have gone the "DV Toolkit" route which includes DigiTranslator as well as some other upgrades such as SMPTE timecode as a choice for the "Time Ruler" instead of just samples, beats or simple sequence time.

Unlike AVID, FCP CANNOT IMPORT OMF. That means when you are done with the mix, you need to have some sync pops before and after the program to give you something to sync the track with back in FCP. So you will need to "Bounce" from ProTools via AIF files or something else compatable with FCP import.
Auto Duck's ProImport FCP appears to allow you to import OMF into FCP but it' s $495.

To get back to AVID you can export from PT as OMF again, open it in AVID and you will get media with the same time code as the original sequence, making alignment extremely easy.

Of course if you are mastering your audio directly to tape via layback then you don't have to worry about how to get back to the NLE.

thx a lot guys

Just found out there should be a free tool called: "OMF Tool". As i understood it does the same as digitranslator, just not as good. Anybody know something about that?

I keep hoping that Apple will make Soundtrack their copy of Pro Tools... all the compaines could just redo their plugins...

You know, Soundtrack Pro isn't that far off. (At least from ProTools LE.) I haven't used Soundtrack for post on an all-out film project yet, but what I have done in Soundtrack Pro has been a joy and produced great results.

If you couldn't tell Gary, I've switched to Mac since I saw you last.

You should leave a post on Digidesign's user forum.

I think the last time OMF Tool was updated it was for PT version 5 which was several years ago.

I am not sure it ever made the transition to Mac OSX but you might still find it for Windows.
