My experience with MB Denoiser is so so, but have never directly compared it to anything else.

Do any of you guys have a favorite noise adding method?

* @James: I don't know what my answer to that previous post should be, I'm torn between "blushes" and "sorry James I already have a girlfriend"; I think I'll leave it as "thanks for the compliment :)"
All good.

Wanted to let you know that I'm doing some effects tests shots for my next film today and will be trying out Flaat 2. My last feature was shot mostly with Neutral dialed down, and we were an early adopter of technicolor, but like many, wasn't happy with the faces. Looking forward to seeing how yours holds up, especially for effects work =)

great to hear! keep me posted!

and also, just in case anybody is interested: I'm working on the preliminary version of Flaat for the 5D3, it should be out early this week

you can download version 2.0 of my suite of Flaat picture styles here:
http://www.similaar.com/foto/flaat-picture-styles/index.html

you'll see there's a name change, now they are called by the number of stops of DR that they get:
Flaat_1 is now Flaat_09 (slightly modified)
Flaat_2 is now Flaat_10 (very slightly modified)
Flaat_3 is now Flaat_11 (very slightly modified)
Flaat_4 is now Flaat_12 (very slightly modified) (it doesn't get to 12 stops, but it's more than 11)

also, there are two sets of picture styles:
* one based on Portrait, for nice skin tones, but with some color shifts (e.g. blue goes a bit towards cyan)
* one based on Neutral, without those color shifts
I always use the ones based on Portrait, the others I only made them because some people wanted to avoid any color shifts. I'd rather have nice skin tones than correct blue, but it's your choice.

Also, note that the recommendation for Tone has gone from =0 to =1.

I found there's no need to create special picture styles custom tailored for the 5D3: it reacts to picture styles in exactly the same way as the old cameras. Color may be slightly different, but light response (and DR) are exactly the same. Even if the 5D3 has a lot more DR in RAW stills mode (which I know is the case, after playing in DPP), only 11.5 stops of DR are useable in video mode, just as with my T2i

A little test of flaat2, 10n and 10p. T3i - Olympus Zuiko OM 50mm F/1.4 - ISO ML 1250 - Shutter 1/31 thru 1/60th

Flaat2 would give crazy colors in the rolloff of clipped highlights. These new ones seem to be very nice with less of that effect. Definitely worth much more testing!

Cheers,
Pete

I am thinking to moving over to Cinema Profile for Quick edits. Heard a lot of great stuff from some World Reknown wedding cinematographers.
Neutral tweaked was not working out for me..or even Marvels or Cinestyle

Looks like your a pro with that Drill Press. Looked nerve racking. lol

Here's a shot from our tests on Sunday. No effects on this shot, just a light Colorista and some grain. Great job on the picture styles! I'll be using Flaat 2 on my next feature =)

* thanks for testing Flaat

* any particular reason for prefering Flaat_n over Flaat_p? for things like this, Flaat_n may be best, but as soon as there's people in frame, I always go for Flaat_p (based on portrait --> nicer skin tones, specially if your grading skills are not superb)

* Flaat_09 has one stop less DR than CineStyle or Marvels Cine, and it shows; Flaat_10 would have the same DR as the others

* I guess you used different values of sharpness for each one: 0 for CineStyle and MarvelsCine, 2 (as recommended by me) for Flaat; I don't know why (maybe it's because of the direct comparison) but it seems a bit oversharpened in some of the shots here; in any case, sharpness=2 is just a recommendation, use the value that you like most, the only important setting with Flaat is Contrast=-4 (if you change that, the light response is not near-log anymore)

Yes I chose Flaat_n because I didn't plan to shoot people in the test :) I didn't change the sharpness setting. I used the default values that came with the styles. It looks like Flaat footage is more sharpened.
