Ok, so i improvised a color profile for the f3, and it looks closer than other picture styles. Will have to work on it, but figure i can offer it as an option out there. I had hoped to use Prolost neutral, and if that didn't work i would use flaat or other well known picture style but after a quick A/B on set we went with my custom one. Shows some promise. Will up date soon. Some of the footage will air on TV.
 
I wiped my computer, but if anyone is interested in an f3 profile. let me know.
 
Is it already done? Would love to try it out.

Someone mentioned earlier he's figured out how to raise th black point in PSE (like Cinestyle) but his post is now deleted, anybody knows how it's done or if it's possible?

Raising the black level in PSE? Hmm, the only method on this thread that I saw, was an artificial method, which actually lost detail, not gained. That may be why the poster deleted it. I will go back and look.


That method was simple. In the color adjustments on PSE, the user can change 'black' to a lighter color. The problem with this, is that shadows were not lifted, but just turned into gray blocks with even less detail than before. So, it looked cool, but didn't help recover detail or dynamic range.

Yes James that's the post I was reffering to. I've been trying to emulate the Cinestyle gamma curve because I really like how flat it is on the 5DIII. What I am trying to achieve is the Cinestyle gamma but with the Portrait picture style colour response not the greenish Neutral. People look much better in Portrait but I lose the cinestyle Log curve that intercuts beautifully with other log worflows, and if I go Cinestyle, it gives people that green tint neutral gives compared to Portrait. I came really close to that cinestyle Log gamma but the raised black point to 8IRE is something that seems to be exclusive for Technicolor's engineers for some reason. I would really like a Cinestyle PS but based on Portrait, that would be ideal for me.

That would be great if the user had a more powerful color customization tool to create picture styles. Maybe on the next version.
 
I think the picture style editor could be a very powerful tool for Canon future. If they just give it more features and finer control over all image parameters then we would be able to replicate Sony/Panasonic/Samsung/Alexa colour science, basically it would mean being able to adjust the camera's colour science. It would also be great if we could import LUTs from Resolve to the PSE.

Seems like an easy implementation (and they already have the basic idea) but would give Canon a huge advantage.

I agree. The PSE is already one of the most flexible color profile design options available, and if more options where added, it would become a selling point for Canon.
 
A friend had a 60d and i downloaded a bunch of pictures styles and we did a canon picture style test.

was happy to see my old profile bested all of the others in highlight retention and naturalism. Even beat out Marvel Cine in highlights.

But the shadow game was won by Neutral. Marvel had a hair more detail, but at the expense of looking unnatural, without any real gains. Marvel Cine latitude is very similar to Neutral, but Marvel clips ugly, so for me, it is a great profile for controlled light shoots only. As the tone curve is pleasing when everything is working. But i don't see it adding much in real world latitude.
