A7s sample footage

Stu Maschwitz got his hands on some original XAVC-S slog2 3200 iso footage. Says on twitter it's fun to grade, but definitely noisy. That gives me some concerns, since Stu is one of those guys whos opinion I trust.

If it makes you feel any better...the C100 C-Log is noisy as well. There may be some NR not applied to the footage internally by choice (as I do) because I choose to be in control of that in post.

Stu also responded when asked how it was grading compared to the GH4:

"Only one bazillion times better."

This looks promising for DR:

While it does look like slog2 has more noise in shadows it has a lot better DR in highlights. I would expose the slog to the right and then bring the shadows down a bit in post and voila, you have a really nice image :)

Nice! Finally...something thats clear about what is going on. Man, that may have pushed me over the edge with this little cam. Looks like a 5D3 replacer for sure.

Im a bit confused about how this slog2 actually works.. Its like the image sits to the left of the sensor DR and thus improving the highlight retention given/relative to the stops of light you give the sensor, at the cost of introducing noise in the shadows. But is the sensor actually rated at ISO3200 or is it like exposing for ISO800?

There's supposed to be noise in the shadows in slog2, it's supposed to make the whole DR available and avoid letting compressed formats remove shadow detail. It's noisier than some other gamma because if you recorded in a different gamma and brought the shadows up to the level of slog2 all you'd see is macroblocking and posterization where that noise and detail should be. It slog2 doesn't create noise, underexposure does. If you expose slog2 the same as you would another gamma, and then grade it to match that gamma, it will only have more noise to the extent that it has less muddy shadows.

FS700 is pretty noisy too - doesn't make it in any way unusable. Honestly if if this basically is as good as the fs700 or c100, it's really kicking ass for it's size, price and size of sensor.

Thats kinda my take on it too. I was actually very surprised how noisy the C100/ninja combo is....but its a nice grain and easily removable.

Sweet! 120 clip at the end is pretty tight for 720. So is that what's happening in the night clip with all the noise? Basically he underexposed?

I'm sure that it was probably said hundred times, but what sort of 4k output do we get form a7s? Is that only 4:2:2 8bit, or with O7Q we can get something more?

422 8 bit

God I wish this camera could output 10bit.

Sony would be brilliant to secretly release a "hack" some anonymous programmers "discover" to allow 10bit recording. So it's not officially supported, but just like MagicLantern, everyone buys the camera with the understanding that it can be so so so much more than stock.

Thanks for posting that L1N3ARX

ReelWorksMedia, that review had me feeling good...until he did the side by side with the Lumix GH4. Then I was like, ****, it looks fantastic and records 4K internally, and outputs 10bit. :(
