A7s sample footage

If I understand it correctly, the manual says that the PAL model doesn't record 24p, only 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p, 100p, 120p. That would be a step back from the a7/a7r, as in that case the PAL version records 24p too. If I had a PAL camera on preorder, I would try to reach a Japanese owner (edit: sorry, Japan is NTSC).

3 random a7s videos I found while searching for footage. I was attracted to this camera for replacing my fs100 and bmpcc. But since their is more footage I have my doubts more and more. To bad because I also need a good photo-camera.
The main thing is ugly highlights and digital noise in the blacks (in SLOG). I'm not interested in the lowlight thing but just searching for a good hybrid photo/video camera. The footage from Den was alright but not what I am looking for.
But since I have evolved with my FS100 and found the right PP, lut, cinegamma and grading I like it more more, actually love it. So it might be the case with the a7s, it's still fresh so let's see what comes out.

Isn't Japan NTSC?

NTSC and PAL are analog standard def formats and have nothing whatsoever to do with HD. I do wish people/manufacturers would stop misusing this term. Rant over.

Those samples i don't think are representative, especially the vimeo one. It just doesn't look right compared to say, newshooters version. It appears scaled, perhaps it was APS-C crop or perhaps the post workflow was all wrong, perhaps it isn't even an A7s. An awful lot of people don't get the post workflow, especially in Slog. The noise in the blacks could also be attributed to this too.

I still have my preorder and 99.9% sure would be selling the FS100. The new shooter stuff looks solid, along with a few other examples. Highlight handling on the 100 was it's biggest problem and Slog2 should solve that. A side by side of the two would be interesting though!

cheers

for me it look like export in lousier format or yeah using aps-c and i wonder what aperture used too, and many focus point is just not on the main subject.

It's a bit like when the FS700 came out. It was impossible to find any footage from it that wasn't super slow motion. But here it's the high ISO instead ;)

I love how people are shooting night for day. It looks hideous! Just because it can shoot 400,000 ISO doesn't mean you should :2vrolijk_08:Night for day is the new shallow DOF  Thank Christ some of the lads in LA are getting theirs this week, I can't stand to look at any more amateur s*%te.

So just a note - there was a further comment on the Shubaya (busy pedestrian intersection in Tokyo) clip - he shot it in AVCHD - 24fx mode. Although that shouldn't make an incredible difference in the overall quality.

Yeah, definitely should clean it up quite a bit. Pulling the trigger on this one for sure. I shoot a lot of events and the low light on this thing will be a life saver. From what I can see, I'd have no problem shooting as high as 10-12k ISO and be able to stop down a bit.

I just think those black-edges around highlights are so ugly! And are even causing moire type effect on the tilt down the front of the building.

If you pause that video you can see a double image (cars crossing the girl). Was this shot interlaced? Or interpreted as interlaced, so actually it's half vertical resolution?

As for black edges, it looks like perhaps in camera sharpening. We don't know whether this was even Slog2 do we? It could just be some default PP with no post work, in which case might explain why it looks rubbish, it's not the cam really

cheers

Sadly I fear the worst.

The FS700 has the exact same issue... It didn't matter how much I turned down the sharpening or changed the picture profile, the only way to avoid the false aliasing on high contrast edges is to either expose the shot so that nothing clips (obviously not possible in most real-world situations)... or record to the Odyssey 7Q and let it debayer the image for you, avoiding Sony's algorithms... (not going to be an option for a camera as it only has HDMI output)

One note - I downloaded the original file from that video - it's encoded at 30p and I suspect it might have even been shot at 60. And....it's clearly shot interlaced. You guys are obsessing over an interlaced file.

I just saw that Paul already noted that. Anyway, download the file - it looks like garbage, and it's clearly because of choices that the shooter made. They seem to have a PZ lens on there too - not sure if that's then an APS-C, aren't the only PZ lenses in E mount APS-C? So this is probably crop mode too.
