A7s sample footage

Kind of an incendiary question. Is the A7s better than the GH4 by the margin you were hoping it would be?

I ask this as someone who already returned his GH4.

I found the GH4 to be a bit of a disappointment - especially with skin tones and less than impressive DR, even with 4k scaled down. I sold mine in favor of checking out the A7s. But I also have an A7 for stills. For me this makes lenses much easier to manage - and I prefer the FF DR, DOF and FOV compared to M43. I live in Florida and shoot outside in the sun a lot, having any extra latitude to pull down highlights is huge.

Here's a grade I just did of some handheld A7S footage shot by Roman - https://vimeo.com/99545685

It's looking really good.
Nice.

All I could complain about is some noise in unwanted areas (e.g. 1:03 in the floor just in front of her) and some areas that look like they would show banding if it wasn't for the noise (e.g. center top at 1:06). But that's just nitpicking. I really like the results. WHERE'S MY CAMERAAAAAAAA!!!

a7s vs GH4: I still haven't seen a DR comparison using slog2 and cinegamma. I expect the a7s to have vastly superior DR, at least 3 or 4 stops more than the GH4. That is, if the GH4 is in 5D3+H264 territory, and already knowing that the a7s-internal is in F3-internal territory.

I can try, but I think it's handheld, so it is not going to be accurate at all. But let's see what number comes out...

ALthough I'm not sure how you apply this to 8 4:2:0, I would probably err on the side of 40-50% as well for the A7S as well.

At this point in time I ritually throw skin into the 40% range with BMD cameras, especially shooting PR422HQ.

Someone should still try overexposing, but my personal bracket would be -1.0 - +0.5 from what I'm seeing, and from DLing Roman's 3GB DNxHD file. Just me, I really want to put my hands on the camera and break it, soon. A pair of days down in Venice would give me a pretty clear idea.

Strancali! Call BH! xD

Middle grey should be at 38%, white at 68% for SLOG.

haha, i ordered directly from Sony thinking I would get it before any retail stores but I guess not! They did send me a notice saying they are preparing to ship the camera and that was Saturday. I should get it this week though.

Had mine on order and it was literally shipping when I noticed that my confirmation email had an OLD address. Won't see my camera for another week due to having to wait for a refund through Amazon just to place the order again with the correct address. Epic fail....Oh well, hope to see some more goods when people start getting theirs this week!

Ouch!

It'd be nice to see some full footage shot using one of the PP equivalent of one of the cinegammas from the fs700 - Noah, very interested to see what you get out of this camera, and not just in the slog.

The SLog2 spec calls for middle grey at 32%

Margin for experience, I'm sure. 32-45ish sounds fine to me, and about right. Did Samuel post a measure for how many stops over Middle Grey A7S SLOG2 XAVC S might have?

It didn't look like much to me. ALthough I am pretty sure (well I think so anyway) that the A7S has more usable DR than the GH4, that test that was posted seemed to show the A7S clipping up top slightly sooner than the GH4, on the opposite end the A7S saw well into the shadows without a massive noise penalty. S and all. =P

@Strancali - Oh YEAH you told me it was from Sony, duh.

New toy envy, I have it!

Yea man you and me both. I might be heading to Vegas for a few days so once I get it, i'll let you mess with it first

Got mine a few hours ago. My first impressions are very high. PP6 using ITU709(800%) yields an image with an extra stop of DR, VERY similar to the C100 in WideDR mode (or C-log for that matter). Cine2 color matrix yields very accurate results, and mates well with a C100 image (at first glance). All in all I think this will be an excellent B-camera to a C100.

S-log is as advertised, several stops of extra DR, really amazing although a bit cumbersome for run and gun due to the ISO3200 issue. White balance setting is also a bit clunky, but not at all a deal breaker.

One feature I really like is the Auto ISO - smooth auto exposure adjustments with NO clunky steps, very useful for R&G, especially in concert with the ITU709(800%) gamma.

Peaking seems OK - it will get you close but that's it.

Ergonomics are OK for a DSLR, and the EVF is fantastic. The articulating LCD is a bit cheezy and limited in range. I'll have a metabones adapter in a few days and I'm guessing that with OIS the camera will be very hand holdable at medium focal lengths, and easily adaptable to a small rig.

I tried one of the early Alpha cameras a few years ago and hated it, this one is right on the mark.

Thanks for info stevedocmaker. Can you confirm that the 29 minute recording limit applies in the US?
