A working Scarlet!

Personally, I think this is the camera I'm going to grow old with. For my personal things I love to be much more run and gun than S35mm, and I hate focus pulling, etc. So something like this -- especially if it has high quality sound, I'm going to be all in on.

I could be wrong but I thought the last announced price was 4750 on the Nov announcement of last year, plus the 1k addition for HDR puts it to 5750 for the fixed scarlet kit (comes with accessories as well). though who knows if this will be the final price but that is where it is as of now. and we don't have the full information of the restrictions on redcode and frame rates (HDR as well) on the scarlet yet(when using cf), but I doubt it will do 120fps to cf.

why? fixed lens, 2/3 inch sensor, shaped like DSLR what is it that makes you want this camera?

Redcode, VFX work, and mostly... the fact that it's NOT trying to comply with broadcast specs or industry standards. I love the specs on the AF-100 and the F3, but I'm so tired of companies crippling frame-rates and using a "compliant" codecs. I just want the data from the sensor. Codecs should be for for distribution, not acquisition. I'm also one of the people that loves the SLR ergonomics for video. Regular cameras are starting to piss me off, I can't stand not having all the controls at my thumbs anymore.

I can see these cameras at events like concerts on jibs. Also will be popular in the 3D market.

yea 3D will be huge on these. The 2/3 sensor is actually a plus here. And, since everything is fly-by-wire, there's no reason two couldn't be controlled with one "Red-mote" to ensure they're synced.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I suspect one of the biggest reasons that this camera will be sought after, is RAW (REDCODE) video. Supposedly (last mentioned) it will also have their version of HDR video. 2/3 sensor is NOT desirable to most...but these other reasons are strong in the minds of many. (I don't agree or disagree...but I think that is the "crux" of the matter.)

I spent most of 2010 shooting an ongoing series where I would have LOVED to have a 2/3 Scarlet. Or darn near any other very good 2/3 camera. My 1/2 EX1 was really a stop too slow. I needed something slightly faster. My Canon DSLR could get me the speed I needed, but the depth was so shallow at that speed, it was borderline useless. The 2/3" sensor still has GREAT use in sports videography and other forms where you NEED the depth. I needed about 25ft of depth and had maybe 12-18 on the DSLR. I just couldn't get there.

I'd love to have two of these. More than nearly any other camera I could name. I've worked the REDCode workflow plenty enough to be comfortable with it. I can edit it natively at 4K, I can offline/online it, I can preprocess through RCX, etc. Absolutely love the codec and the workflow.

If you shoot sports, concerts, docs etc. then this could potentially be the most useful all round camera to use.

I quite like the look of the side handle and having gotten used to filming on the GH1, there are certain things that I now like about the form factor, which before I couldn't imagine.
I think the point with the DSMC concept is, that you module out the cameras into a form that works for each task, so you're not stuck with DSLR form factor if it's not your bag.

I dunno. I'm not saying it's the same, but its reminding me of that 4k concept cam that canon showed off. The only thing I'm liking about this camera is the RAW, and that 3K scales down to a healthy 1080p making up for the chroma resolution that is lost with a bayer sensor.

The focus ring for all three sounds like an ergonomic no-no. I don't know where that idea came from. That's the thing reminding me the most of the canon, and the thing that doesn't sound like it was made with the tradition in mind. One ring, doesn't sound too 'pro'.

2/3rds is an awesome size, I prefer it these days to the s35, it's low maintenance enough, it's shallow enough, depending on how fast the lens is. Sure 2.8 on s35 size is plenty of speed and plenty thin, but what would it do on a roughly 16mm sized imager? This lens needs to be a constant 1.something to appease the shallow depth chasers. It's gotta be that fast to make up for the low-light tradeoff, it has to be proportional. If the lens' speed is proportional to the imager, then I'm fine with it. I don't have any problem at all with it being fixed.

If it doesn't work out of the box it'll be a gyp. All advertised features have to work out of the box.

I agree about the drama being serious competition for this, I know most won't agree, but the Ikonoskop is still looking like (maybe less features) but a wiser choice. I don't think this is in the same range as the F3 or the Af100, the difference in codec puts it in a much higher league.

I bring up the canon concept model that everyone thought was a monstrosity (as kinda did i) but I am curious to see how different the reactions can be just cause RED made it.

RED's real contribution was their codec. I think they should stick to advertising that, cause after all the talk, this looks like a compromise. Over 5000 dollars would seriously be pushing their luck.

The one very very smart thing that I rarely hear anything about is the choice to go 3K. I don't think this was meant for a 3K output at all. 3K makes awesome 1080. It's like giving extra room for chroma res. Really the one thing that strikes me as brilliant.

I'm am mildly impressed about the rest. If the price is RIDICULOUSLY low, like under 4000 then yeah ok I'll take ALL that back.

I apologize for sounding like I'm bashing, I honestly think I'm not, if this were any other camera I wouldn't have this last sentence in there. Deep breath, queasy feeling, let's see how hard I've sinned.

Because I'm not against the fixed lens, it seems to cover a decent zoom length, and at the wide end is sufficient. Most of the time I use a 28mm, a 50mm and a 105mm - the stock lens, as far as I can tell, should cover this. My only two caveats are that I hope it's as well built as other Red lenses, and the lens ring issue.

Coming from using 35mm sensors and lens adapters, 2/3 inch sensor isn't such a bad thing. Shallow DOF isn't everything and if you want it, with this camera you will still be able to get it. You do realize that a lot of recent, large scale feature films have been shot with 2/3 inch sensors?

The reason it's shaped like a DSLR is because it's got the Red handle. If you dislike it, don't add it - add a shoulder mount or whatever you want for the ergonomics you require.

Also Redcode, 3k and 120fps shooting seal the deal. Touch focus sounds good too, but I'll reserve judgement on that feature till I see it.

2/3 with a constant aperture f2.4 8x zoom lens and pristine IQ RAW, 3K, crystal clear image even at ISO 2000... I think that's what makes people want this camera.

And HDRx!

Is 2.4 fast enough? What's the base ISO? clear at 2000 on that sensor size? Is the noise (if any) grainlike? I would think that the noise would look different on a smaller sensor. I really don't know these are honest questions, not reproaches.

If ISO 800 is considered the base ISO at M-X, and people rate at 1000 with no problem, I'd think f2.4 is fast enough. Also consider things only got better with new Color Science. I don't think the grain structure would differ much from other M-X sensors.

I think the best feature and obviously under-praised is HDRx... It'll be a great tool for lighting sets on a budget! No need for massive amounts of light to balance to outdoors level, no need to gel all windows.

However, I'm not sure HDRx would work on CF cards since it works with dual video streams.

It just makes me wonder how people can also ignore the fact that is 3K, RAW, no jello, the high FPS... Sensor size is really making people go crazy.

I'm over sensor size for the benefit of thin focus, I prefer the 2/3rd size recently... the one ring is seeming like a drawback. I love that it's 3K.

I dunno about HDRx, it's a test of maturity... no kind of compensation can negate the need for controlled light, even if the source is available. I think it's not the most necessary feature.

Totally with you on sensor size.

We can ignore it because its still in development and subject to change.. count on it. Until we can buy one and disect the footage, its all up in the air.

However, I do agree with you though that the specs are unbelievable even at 5 or 6 k. Although, I more interested in the S35 Scarlet/Epic Light. Any word on the pricing... it was supposed to be under 10k before but I dont know where we stand currently.

Regarding the ring, I commented on Vimeo:

"Most lenses don't have an iris ring and you adjust it with camera controls, Scarlet will be just like this.

Considering you don't have to adjust focal length on the fly, not really a problem. I remember reading on forums you'd have another way to control focal length, like with the wheel on the side handle.

I'm really curious about the digital FF utilities Scarlet is going to offer. May well make physical FF useless."

Wow. I didn't realize how SLR-like the form factor would be.

Definitely not a fan of the lens. Wish there were actual buttons on the body, but I think a lot of those functions will be buttons with the proper module.

On the plus side, the RAW images should be fantastic - a robust recorded image is something we are missing in many of the cameras currently in this price range. And HDR video at this price point is astounding.
