5D MKIII specs

Rick, your posts are always balanced, what makes a pleasure to read them. Even if I think the theory of conspiracy presented by others on the 1080p episode still for release that you comment, is what it is.

There's nothing to be afraid about. They are interested to simply put the footage to run in every computers out there saving in the bandwidth ;-) LOL Only who doesn't know this company, can think otherwise.

Can you really judge on ONE video that doesn't even appear to be the compression mode everyone wants to look at? It averages at 28Mbps I believe multiple posters have pointed out on the comments.

And while I see rolling shutter, it looks SIGNIFICANTLY improved to me over the 5D with an 85mm lens on there.

I'm not saying this is the right camera for anyone, but this test isn't even showing us a whole lot. There were a few scenes in the C300 movies that I was not impressed with, yet overall, I think the camera does great from the majority of the footage.

So far, the 5dm3 is making me VERY hopeful for the 7D.
On this post now, I agree in 100%. My only doubt is if it is the 7D to be hopeful for. Or the upcoming 4K 1D? And when? JVC began as usual with their prototypes (useless codec, small sensor completely out of trend, etc) that only a few buy. Who's next? The best medecine the doctor can prescribe to 1080p.

Haha, well, I am certainly a pixel-peeper, there is no doubt about that. But, I've watched enough footage from cameras to know that sometimes, you really have to wait for A LOT more detail to come out to get a good picture. (pun intended)

I remember all the excellent footage I saw when the D90 was getting released, I thought it was amazing. I bought the D90, wow, I had no clue the rolling shutter would be SO BAD it was crazy! It taught me a lesson. How someone else shoots with a camera is probably not how you shoot with a camera. And further, how you shoot a camera is probably going to be a lot like the camera you are currently using, so you are going to be biased.

Case in point, if you are shooting on the AF100 and you get a 5Dm3, you are most certainly going to be annoyed immediately at the lack of ND. When I got my FS100, this was the first "negative experience" I had to work through.

With the 5Dm3, everyone has to work through what it doesn't do and deal with that negativity before they can enjoy what gains the camera has made, which look like some.

I think mico's comment really hit the nail on the head. The 5dm3 is a stills camera for a stills market. That is the PRIMARY function and everything is about this. This is why I understand there is no flip out LCD, because then the buttons on the left side would be gone. For a stills shooter of the 5dm2 or 7d, you are going to expect those buttons to be SOMEWHAT in similar places so you don't have to relearn something just for a video shooter.

I mean, the DoF button, I bet some people are going to love it moved and others HATE it because they are so used to it being in a different spot.

And I look at it this way, if the internal compression is great, if the rolling shutter is much improved, it doesn't matter, the next complaints will be the body style :) As the boss at my last job would say "It's always something" :)

What I REALLY look forward to, is actually Phillip Bloom getting a hold of one. I gotta say, his non-scientific tests have been my favorite. I own a few of the cameras he tests and because *I* know how those cameras work, I can see the validity in his tests from a generalized perspective. ALWAYS helpful to me.

And I promise, as soon as the 5dm3 hits the streets, I am sure I can get my hands on one to give a DEFINITIVE answer on rolling shutter compared to 5dm2 speed as the test I use, developed by Adam Wilt, is very easy and has VERY low margin of error.

Well my hopefulness on the 7D is I want an APS-C sized DSLR to replace my 7D with a bit better quality for when I want something smaller to run around with. If the 5Dm3 has crop modes and their quality is good, the 5Dm3 might make a good replacement and give me the option of FF if I wanted. I like having a nice stills camera. :)

I have two favorite aside Adam Wilt and Barry, of course (but under strictly Panasonic products invariably or industry in general or for workarounds etc -- he is the best! :-)

Zacuto and Kholi :)

LOL Forgot Pappas! Sorry, Michael... : D But you are too distracted with teories of conspiracy, lately ;-) Apart that, he came first than Philip. He is not european, but was one of the most generous guys posting the Canon footage on the first hand. I and many others, I bet, miss those times!

Lol... Fun times indeed. How technology has changed in such a short time since those days Emanuel. NAB might bring some interesting stuff next!

I'm not even going to look at it. Handheld recording to the dodgy lo-fi codec is something I wouldn't ever contemplate.

Well, this has been a weird camera launch. That 1080 clip is not great to look at, but there's a lot that can still be gleaned from that. Pretty underwhelming. Looks like waiting for NAB seems like a good bet to see what else is coming. This is very soft looking 1080 footage.

Exactly! All footage what I have seen so far looks really soft to my eyes - just like the 7D. And I don´t understand why Canon release such horrible video like this "Radball". Maybe the D800 is the better option http://vimeo.com/38009435 .....

I start to believe this internet is dangerous! Even you Uwe? I thought we were too much focused to save Europe instead (Cheers to my Hamburg from the debtor south! LOL ;-)

BTW, D800 looks suffer of something already diagnosed to 5D series before... : D

I like the D800 look here. It's has a smooth organic tone to many of the shots.. That was also a 720p upload. It would be nice to see the 1080P. Never the less, very nice. Glad to see Nikon in the game.

After watching the 1080p video I can officially confirm that Canon fixed nothing but the moiré. The resolution is the same old FAKE DSLR looking 1080p. Protecting the C300 much? I'm sad but expected, did we really think they were going to give us the same perfect resolution of 16k camera coming from the same company?
GH2 still unbeaten.

Sandro, given your experience with the D800, would you say it's a 1080P camera, or is it similar to the 5DMK2/MK3 in terms of resolution?

Isn't that what everyone had basically been complaining about? Aliasing and moiré? Other than that, if you speak about definition, GH2 is very likely much different. FF 5D series is another camera, one doesn't replace the other one, unless that's what you're looking for. You'll never replace a TV look-like with something very much wider cinematic. The opposite applies as well.

I'm not the one you're looking for but I can assure you the D800 looks the same in terms of resolution just full of very bad aliasing :)

Well...not really. Moiré is a direct artifact of bad downscaling. Fixing it like that (apparently from a software side) is just a cheap attempt to fool people. This is not even a 720p camera, I never considered my 550d to come close to 720 lines. They will put the same resolution on the future Rebel so the GH2 will always win with a "comparable" camera anyways. There's no doubt that whatever we say Canon is doing this on purpose, its not like they didn't want to invest resources to deliver a real 1080p video :)

EDIT: sorry I confused the d800 wiht the d4. I honestly don't see why the d800 should be different...we'll see.

Has anyone confirmed the authenticity of the "wave the camera around a dimly-lit room that has a bunch of fabric hanging around" footage?

Do we know for sure it was shot with a 5DM3?

But for me, even if it's authentic, it's mostly-useless as a "camera test". I usually don't shoot like that.

I agree with Rick B.: It usually takes several weeks or more after final production versions of a camera ships before we get a clear idea of how it performs in a variety of real-world production situations.

"Act of Valor" is perhaps the perfect case in point. Despite the 5DM2's many "issues", amazing things can be done with it. Imagine what skilled DPs will achieve with the 5DM3.

Well, you are not that Sandro, but you speak like you could have ever shoot with any one of these cameras ;) We know too little as of now. No one gave a different explanation for moiré. What someone said was that both issues have been announced as addressed. And this is already something. Because, these have been the main problem pointed out by most part of 5DII users.

Definition is actually what «a cheap attempt to fool people» is. Only to have numbers on the table, when we deal with perception, it is plain misleading. Above all, external to us, more in the psychology realm. For some reason in the film school where I learned and in the curricula where I have lectured, psychology program included or not in other program of studies is mandatory if you want to conclude your education and training.

If it is possible someone to claim that dvxuser is a good plataform for it. Here, all of us look like to be at the same level. And this is far away to be true : )

A lot of people here think why got money for a GH2, they will be able to beat the 'inferior' 5DIII. The point is either of both are 'inferior' in a lot of or some features. Period. FF is not even comparable to the crop format like your Rebel model. There's no camera winner, my dear fellow. Just different capture devices :-)

I can somehow barely agree with you when you say «they didn't want to invest resources to deliver a real 1080p video». But again, it is partially true. Why? Are we speaking about what Canon?! There are many Canons inside the company ;-)
