5D MKIII specs

They should've just waited to release any video, lol...because no matter what, even if the video is heavily compressed, 720p, etc. people still make judgements well before they should. Better to leave people to just bicker about what's on paper then what's on Vimeo. Until I see a raw piece of footage that's lit decent, I'll reserve my opinion. On paper, so far...it looks good but time will tell.
I'm with you, but the hype machine demands it.

"I have tested Canon MKIII video features myself and I could say that they got it right with the codec with moire and aliasing - now we are free.
Except for the fact that HDMI signal is somewhat crippled by not having full screen image - albeit it stays @1080i all the time and going from preview to record is seamless and fast - even with my crappy CF cards.

Maybe there is something else that I couldn't find that is really bad but even the jello isn't noticable (it is on my much beloved NEX 5N) - this freaks me a bit as I was using 85mm lens handheld on the MKIII.

From my first hand experiences I haven't felt such a revelation for ages, I mean it's the same feeling when I hold the 5D MKI in my hands for photography, 7 years ago - "at least the real deal"

Over the years I have become a moire-aliasing-jello peeper and all I can say is that in the biker movie of D800 the bad moire is there in the pavement whereas I have a feeling that MKIII is clean.
In the other hand I don't know how the absolute video resolution lines are measured."

Agreed!

On paper this looks like a very good forward move. Even what we have seen, like the marionette film shows very nice results. What's weird is, that was major commercial shoot. So obviously they felt that the 5DMIII was up to task to shoot it. Why not upload it as a 1080P video as well? Of course, that's only known to Canon. However, if they have corrected most visual issues that were on the 5DMII, the 5DMIII will be a good success.

Theres no mystery for me. Canon has got a cinema video division now and if thats what you want then theres a camera for sale now and theres more coming if you're patient. What they don't want to do is alienate their loyal major money making still photography base by focusing on video when the 5D was built for still photographers, the ones that made it a success 7 years ago when it didn't have any video features. Theres also a tendency to think that the camera revolves around the video features when you only go to video centric sites but one of the major hobbies in the world is still photography and most could care less about video and the rest are just pleasantly surprised that it does video with only a small minority using it mainly for video.

Resounding sounds of agreement from top to damned bottom.

I guess 4:2:2 is too much to hope for *sigh* I really am looking to this to be my do-it-all cam for the next 5 years, can't afford a new FF cam more often than that (My 5D is about 5 yrs old), and I fully expect the "Cine-DSLR" to be way out of my budget, north of the 1Dx I should expect.

Ah well, it *is* a stills cam first, despite the video-friendly sensor resolution.

I applaud your attitude. Wish more people thought in terms of 5 year runs. It's silly that we have to refresh even that soon. Then again, if it's ONLY your hobby....

well put. There's another strategy at play here. NiCan (Nikon & Canon) play both ends of the electronics game. Amateur and Pro. Typically, Amateur sales outstrip pro sales so the revenue from the Amateur sales is used to finance R&D that often ends up in future gear. If any company were foolish enough to abandon its true sponsors, they would not survive. Ask Kodak & Polaroid .
In truth, I've only been able to afford Pro gear in my stills life (past) and though it was well worth it then, would have bankrupted me these days. $3,500 for an SLR that shoots images that only now match and defeat 35mm Kodachrome? My legacy Nikon bodies cost me $150- $250 each. Ridiculous fleecing of amatuer customers so as to finance Kaizen in digital photo.

Hey I just spent $100 on a Lomokino just to keep my hands in film. But I still haven't gotten the 4 rolls I exposed developed and that may be why we pay $3500 for a dslr. Just saying

Well, this has been a weird camera launch. That 1080 clip is not great to look at, but there's a lot that can still be gleaned from that. Pretty underwhelming. Looks like waiting for NAB seems like a good bet to see what else is coming. This is very soft looking 1080 footage.

"underwhelming" is definitely an understatement. This video in now the official 1080p file from the much anticipated camera. Makes no sense to me. Where's the usual suspects, who would normally be shooting the first released footage? Unless their shooting with something else- something unknown?

Ah, just watched the 1080p file.

My conclusions are... the 5DIII is not for me and my shooting style at all. Commendable job Canon. I'm kind of glad though, as I wont need a buyers itch to upgrade. Phew.

1) I don't shoot past 1600 ISO under any circumstance. Even when I'm out in street lighting, or on subways and dark alley ways, a 2.8 lens is fine enough for me. Even when there is no lighting whatsoever except the dark sky, then I'd do time lapse stretch printy style for video and stills yo I don't need clean 6400.

2) Unfortunately the 5DIII's 1080p mode isn't really better than the cameras we got now. Poor downsampling and debayering? At least the moire is nearly gone so fine details like hair and skin and general texture doesn't look so weird.

3) Strictly talking stills side: The new Autofocus points- er I only use 4 anyway (middle, far top, far side, somewhere between). Also the rate button isn't something I'd use.

These are my reasons anyway, I'm sure everyone else has their own pro/cons

Even if the footage isn't that much sharper or more resolute, the moire/aliasing improvement, headphone jack, good monitor output (although not clean), etc. will be enough for some to re-buy. I know I would if I shot on 5D a lot, just to avoid a few of those workarounds that annoy me. :)

Looking forward to more RAW footage surfacing, especially some All-I footage.

Sure. The best input read over here so far. This evolution is a revolution. End of story. Nobody will convince me of the contrary :)

tx for the 1080p link
hello jello, c300 still rules the roost
Yes, thanks. Here is what Jacques-Henri Lartigue 'said' on topic somewhere in 1913:

BTW, I am producing some artist who will see her still photography published worldwide with such 'crappy' jello technology from a 2003 mobile phone, go figure!

:-)

Can you really judge on ONE video that doesn't even appear to be the compression mode everyone wants to look at? It averages at 28Mbps I believe multiple posters have pointed out on the comments.

And while I see rolling shutter, it looks SIGNIFICANTLY improved to me over the 5D with an 85mm lens on there.

I'm not saying this is the right camera for anyone, but this test isn't even showing us a whole lot. There were a few scenes in the C300 movies that I was not impressed with, yet overall, I think the camera does great from the majority of the footage.

So far, the 5dm3 is making me VERY hopeful for the 7D.
