24f Modes

I'm in the market for an HDV camera in the XH A1's price range and was wondering if anyone can give some input on the A1's shooting modes- is the 24f mode just as good as 24p? Is the editing timetable in final cut 24 (23.98)?

I've been reading several different forums that compare it to the Z1U, so anyone's two cents on how this camera matches up with its competitors would be appreciated as well.

Well, 24f in 1080 mode does show about 10-15% resolution loss than true 1080 24p.
But still better than 720p right?

The A1 loses some resolution compared to it's own 1080i mode, but it's 1080i mode was one of the sharpest tested. So when it shoots in one of the progressive modes it's about even with the other cameras in it's class, with the exception of the EX1.

The A1 is interlaced (frames blend), which makes it not as sharp compared to progressive imo. Funny thing is they have Canon camera out now for $1,000 that shoots HD in 24f and 24p. Bummer the A1 does not. :(

It's not simple frame blending that they're doing, 24F is a closely guarded Canon secret. Not as sharp compared to which camera exactly? The A1 is regarded as one of the sharpest HD camera in its class.

By "sharp" I mean film like in motion, I have an A1 and the picture compared to Panasonic's imo (in my opinion) looks less like that of a movie motion picture. Again this is just my opinion based on the footage I have seen first hand.

The difference between 24p and 24f is purely a legal thing. They are different, but when it comes down to it, CCD's record images using an interlaced scan. There is no such thing as a true progressive scan on any camera that uses CCD's. The interlaced scan is used for compression in television broadcasts. No matter what any camera advertises (ie DVX100, HVX, ect). All of these cameras use an algorithm or pulldown to mimic the appearance of progressive scan. CMOS Chips however integrate technology from DSLR cameras, and they are capable of having true progressive scan.

Well there is a reason why Canon calls it 24f and not 24p in the manual of the xha1
But with that said ,when imported in aferfx or photoshop(single frame') and compared to 24p of the dvx100.There is no noticable difference resulotion wise for SD footage at least .I would say no differcence at all.

100% inaccurate.

You walked into that one yommy.

Its my understanding (feel free to correct me if I am wrong). 24p was developed by Pana and Sony. SO to use 24p you need to pay some kind of tech licensing fee. Canon chose not to. So here we are with 24f that gives you 24 full progressive frames per second.

I would probably go with you, Noel.. Reading up about it and all, and looking at the footage it seems like most resonable, if there is a difference, its very SLIM. Probably not worth to WORRY about while filming, then why shall we not worry about everything else at the same time and just be really unconfident and get worthless footage without no loooove in it.

You get my point.

I always thought it was because the A1 uses interlaced CCDs rather than progressive CCDs like a DVX/HVX and therefore they couldn't really call it 24p as that isn't entirely true.

But for all intents and purposes, 24f looks the same as 24p.

24f does something strange with the vertical resolution when shooting in Frame mode. You lose something like 10-15 percent. Why? Im not sure. But again, no one is ever going to notice the 10 percent drop in vertical res.

zerg be careful, because frame mode is not 24f. Frame mode was a faux 24 fps generated by an earlier Sony model.

EDIT: and it sucked.
