1st video posted...

Agreed Darkline and what I was getting at in my earlier post. lets see what it gives when its taken out to the front of the building in the sunshine.

By the way, you going to Videoforum in Feb?

I started downloading before going to bed, nice present to view this morning! Thanks Jim and Jarred.

Why is the blackpoint set so high (around 26,26,26) and the whitepoint set so low?

If I was wanting to show off my higher dynamic range original source to maximum advantage with a motion-JPEG on a computer monitor, I'd put the blacks down near zero and the highest white up near 255, giving more levels to the gradients in the image.

Now, if you do this with the already range compressed 8-bit/channel QT, and then draw the gamma down to almost touch the low-point you can see a square hatching pattern in the blacks, it's not fixed, but random per frame. Of course this is torturing the image to an insane degree, but... I don't think this is QT compression but something in the noise floor of the sensor.

Of course, this shot wipes the floor with any footage I've worked with in terms of noise, but I like to twist things 'till they break then look at the pieces. :)

Regards,

Footage looks nice...but, like Jim, I was curious why the blacks were at 15 IRE on the waveform. Once I brough it down to 0, it looked great!

Wow. Just, wow. I sure hope they can ramp up production of these babies soon! Incredible footage, and only 1K... Congrats, RED team!

I don't think this is QT compression but something in the noise floor of the sensor.

You're seeing the column-to-column variations of the CMOS sensor . . . every CMOS sensor has a noise pattern like this or of similiar nature, and it's usually subtracted out of the image using a black-frame subtraction.

Because these clips have their black points set so high, and I can see the different column-to-column varations in the image, it's pretty evident that there's been no black point calibration to subtract out any of the CMOS related artifacts that would be in the image.

I do hope the final product does some sort of black-point calibration though.

Yes, black calibration will be in finished camera. We just don't have it in the software pipe yet. Remember, these are movies of what the raw sensor is capable of, not what the camera is capable of.

The footage looks very cool (once the black level has been clamped down).

I know this is serious nit-picking for footage from a test sensor, but has anybody else noticed a 'seam' down the centre of the image. It's as if one column of pixels is missing, and the gap has been closed up. It's very hard to spot on a still, but shows up as a ripple along a high-contrast diagonal edge as the image moves.

Graeme, any comment?

Great, teaser. Flashback to IBC....
(BTW, I see a vertical aliasing line about center of the image, is that from the down scale?)

And Jim's Answer:

Any artifacts are compression and scale related. The original is pristine. Proof will be when we post the 4k.
Jim

I also asked Greame about the general pronounced aliasing in the movie and he said he believed it was done in After effects, which as standard uses a very crude bicubic scaling algorithm.

Again we must remember that this footage is pretty is and very early using the prototype sensor. The processing, color science, and scale algorithms that will be implemented in REDCINE and in the hardware boards will most definitely be way better than this.

Yeesh, everybody's on top of this today. :)

Jim, you may be hearing from me soon once I manage to get this durned file downloaded and all.

Sorry Anders. I did try and search the thread before posting my comment, but there are so many comments I missed yours.

Looking forward to seeing the full 4K.

Jim, you're the MAN and that's fishizii!

Red has become synonymous with everything that fun and exhilarating!

I would say: RED: Raw Energy Delivered!

And that's fishizi!!!

Yep, I noticed that as well and wondered about it. Definitely something that should be explained/understood quickly. Would be nice to know whether it comes from the camera or from post. Does anybody know if it was present in the 4K footage shown at IBC?

It's just an artifact on the downconversion / compression. Original 4k doesn't show it.

Graeme

Thanks Graeme, I figured that was likely the case, but it's good to hear that from you.

"RED is the color of birth", quote from one of the most known DoP Vittorio Storaro. You may add it to your list 'cause it's so true for RED. I knew it from the moment, when I heard first about RED at NAB: That's the concept witch will change the market and the way to shoot films.
