100Mbps Max Latitude Native 24/25p Patch

has anyone tried putting say 3 bin files in the root directory, and naming them 1.22, 1.33, and 1.35, and having an option when you push play, to select from the 3 firmwares?? I know when you hack it, you push the little arrow to select the desired firmware, and since there is only one in the root directory, that's the one that gets selected. just wondering if you would have an additional dialogue box if you had more than one bin file in there.

Sounds like a good idea, the only thing I would be afraid of is that the odd numbering (especially lower than 132) could affect whether or not the camera takes the hack. I'd be interested if it would work, but I wonder if we should hear from lpowell or Vitaliy as to whether it could be dangerous.

I'm pretty new to this, and I'm not 100% sure which of these patches I really need, but it sounds like the 100Mbps Max Latitude Native 24/25p patch might be the way to go. I don't have a good grasp on what is more capable, and what each patch brings to the table so it would be nice to hear what they do in real basic terms. Such as the Max Lat is best for greater exposure latitude & motion in mpeg or AVCHD. The Blackout-Powell is best for slow motion and greater detail in FHD or 720/60p SD, ect....

For AVCHD: Do you care about using 60 fps for slow motion? If so, use Blackout-Powell, if not, use Max Latitude.

For MJPEG: I have no idea as I don't use MJPEG. AVCHD's resolution and detail retention are much better, and MJPEG has a recording time limit, whereas AVCHD does not.

Thank you. That was the exact response I was looking for. Short, sweet and to the point. So I can download both patches then load the Max Lat, then later if I want to work with slow motion I can install the Blackout-Powell. I suppose both work fine with Vegas HD Platinum 11.

Premiere will be fine with it; I use Avid MC and older versions have problems with very high-bitrate AVCHD files.

I use cs5. it works well but there's still glitches when playing the footage on the preview screen but it's nothing major I suppose.

I've used Premiere with GH1 footage a bit; I've seen what you're talking about. It won't affect the final product. It's because of the GOP-size of the files; if you transcode to a post production codec like DNxHD you won't have that problem. Just make sure you transcode in a way that doesn't sacrifice quality.

Ya it doesn't effect the export so it doesn't really bother me. I've had to deal with editing ultra laggy anamorphic footage for the last few months so I guess I'm prepared haha

haha ya i hear u. its a beautiful format but very annoying

Ah, sorry, I was referring to anamorphic pixel aspects, not anamorphic image aspect or anamorphic lenses. I agree that it's a great aspect ratio (see the short in my signature for my agreement on anamorphic aspect ratios :D )

Is there any benefit to changing the GOP length from 15 to 12 or lower? I have been getting crash-free results down to a GOP length of 10 but wasn't sure if there's a benefit. Has anyone else pixel-peeped this?

Thanks.

Using a shorter GOP-length with the FHD 1080p mode in the Max Latitude Patch will reduce its reliability under stress. While a shorter GOP-length can improve the AVCHD encoder's ability to track fast moving objects shot at fast shutter speeds, in practice I haven't noticed a significant improvement until GOP-length is reduced to 5-frames or shorter. GOP-lengths that short are usable only when running SH mode at the 25/30p frame rate used by the Max Latitude Patch.

I have noticed that when I add the anamorphic lens to my GH13 running this 100Mbps hack, I get more failures on very high detail scenes (I almost NEVER get a fail when I shoot without the anamorphic lens). I'm curious why the anamorphic lens might increase the failures somewhat (note I still get overall stability with this hack with the anamorphic lens attached, but I did notice an increase in the failures).

Just a guess, but it would seem to me that an anamorphic lens is optically capturing more data/detail (wider aspect) and is cramming all those visuals into the same amount of space on the sensor. Like smushing a bigger piece of foam into a garbage bag than the foam pieces you usually use. It will fit, but it will put more tension on the bag, stretching it to its limits.

Do you notice an overall higher bitrate when shooting the same shot with the anamorphic than you do with flat lenses? If so, that would seem to be the answer.
