SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

I will have a Scarlet 6K SFF35. In EOS mount with the PL Option.....

The pennies are going into the bank already....

And if it never comes to fruition.... hell i'll have saved up a bunch of money!

LOL. That's a good way to look ati t.

But, you do know FF35 doesn't employ a PL mount, right? Reason being the glass doesn't cover the frame size. Although I think this is silly, because you would get more out of it windowed down to S35 size and using PL mounts.

That would change my mind about going S35 vs FF35. In the event that A) FF35 comes down in price and B ) PL mount option becomes available, either or, then I'll invest in the Monstro sensor as an upgrade.

S35, Mysterium X to be exact, is slated to drop much sooner and I'm not about to wait...

And, maybe Jim is planning to surprise people with an even earlier release date on the S35 versions of Scarlet and Epic?

WHAT!!!

No OPTICAL viewfinder???

AHHH man, as a DSLR, that kind of irks me. Low light shooting will be kinda strange I think. Hopefully PS will make an optical viewfinder solution for it.

Summer 2009 or early 2010.

I was planing to get a HPX next year.
Needless to say I canceled that plan after todays revelation.

I can live with my HVX till the Scarlet comes out - my clients are happy with the HVX output and so am I.

In the moment I don´t give a darn for higher resolutions as 2K since over 80% of my HD productions ending up as SD-DVD anyway.
Most poeple let me shoot in HD, just to be prepared for it - but almost nobody want´s me to deliver in HD.
To difficult to handle and watch - they want to be on the safe side and make sure everyone with a average computer or TV set can watch it.

Having said that, 11+ (or even 13+) dynamic range 12-16 bit, big sensor, speed, Red Code (nativeley supported in Premiere) and no need for a adapter is what sells the Red for me.

This is going to be one thing that propels it forward: 3rd Party Solutions. You'll probably see me rocking a fullblown REDROCK Scarlet solution myself. LoL

Has anyone noted the new DR listing for the Red One on the spec sheet?

10 stops. I'd say thats about right (9.5 is probably more accurate though).

I cannot believe that there is no optical viewfinder. Call me old fashioned, but the the ergonomics of the shoulder cam, zoom/focus rocker, and optical viewfinder can't be beat in terms of using the camera as an extension of your body.

I applaud RED and the specs look fantastic, BUT... this is certainly no DSLR killer by any means. I'm a still photographer and my previous generation Canon 5D has nearly triple the MP's as the 2/3" Scarlet, so they're not competing with the photography market in a serious way. The next Canon 5D II is over 21 MP, and the Scarlet is 4.9 MP? Sure, the Scarlet video will be better but I'm keeping my Canon for photography.

Also, sure it's fun to read these specs but the "coming in a year, maybe, or not, we'll see" marketing approach is getting a little old for me. I can appreciate it to some degree, but not in a serious way of holding off purchases. At least with a movie trailer saying, "Coming December 12th to a theater near you" builds "real" anticipation... this "at least a year out and specs may change" does not affect my purchasing now and next year whatsoever. A year in the technology business is huge, who knows what will be introduced next Fall/Winter. I know it's their marketing model, the hype approach, but at this point I prefer the secrecy of Apple and Sony, when an announcement is made the product is in beta testing and just around the corner. But I like Jim and if/when this Scarlet comes out and I'm in the market, as it were, it's on my list. In the meantime... WHOA! YAY RED!

The FF35 version of scarlet and Epic are not going to be available anytime soon. Why ? because there are no PRO PL mount lenses that Pro can use with it. Red is having an identity crisis, be a SLR company or cinema company and they chose dual personality. Which means, they are going to monopolize the FF35 lens market in the begining until the Cameras are proven, then maybe Zeiss, Angenieux and Cooke will join in.

If anything, I speculate that we will see S35 Scarlet and S35 Epic to come out of the truck first.

well im honestly more interested in it as a DSLR.

Though yes youre right the lack of PL will be an issue... Hmmmmmm....

Whats getting old for me is all the criticism since they are trying to provide affordable solutions to the indie filmmaker. Even with some of the problems with the Red One, it has delivered and many filmmaker's are using it today. Instead of embracing the announcement, we get "vaporware" comments but you know what.... I bet most who are complaining now, will be first in line when it comes out. I see Red as a welcome additional to the camera business and may even push the majors to provide more, which will benefit all of us.

Buck, you're quite the smarmy chap. However, you're right: this is no DSLR killer by any means and has only appealed to a very small niche.

I expected the Scarlet body to cost no more than 3,499.99 and while I still have NO ISSUE with the cost it is not about to trump a well-respected, well-rounded, already-released (or soon to be) 5D MKII because the closest to it costs 12K just for the brain. So, no, it's no DSLR killer by any means.

And, we still have a Nikon announcement to look forward to.

Wow, is anyone betting on all these announcements?

C'mon Portland, I know you're out there. I'm calling for a poker night for each giant multi-page pamphlet that comes out.

Pretty much, man. The only things that really matter are the S35 versions. All else just comes next. It makes sense because that's what they have lined up for the RED ONE to begin with, the sensor upgrade. They only need to mass man the sensors and the bodies and we've got our cameras.

Which is why it's a possibility that we'll see it quite early.

acoelho1, hello, I'm in no way critical of RED products and I applaud RED, always have, always will. You must've read me wrong. I'm not talking about their products, I'm talking about the way-into-the-future marketing hype. No doubt Jim is a brilliant marketer to get such attention for products that "may change in specs and release dates". I was pumped about the previous Scarlet he announced, but that vaporized before my very eyes. Now we have a new Scarlet announcement that is another year away, and that may be when they start shipping the first batches... we all know how long the waiting list was for the RED ONE after it began shipping. I like RED, I like Jim, I like what they're doing, but I'd rather see a Scarlet than look at computer models that may change again and are at best a year down the road. Who knows, maybe Panasonic or Sony will have a three 2/3" CMOS unit with much improved refresh rates by the time Scarlet comes out? I'm just sayin'.

And you're right, I will be the first in line when it comes out if it's better than the competition. No doubt. Go RED! But RED is not a religion to me and the marketing hype is manna, not that there's anything wrong with that. If I can get a Canon 5D II at full frame with 21 MP and have the capacity to shoot some 1080p video on the fly at less than $3 grand, compared to a Scarlet shooting around 5 MP on a 2/3" sensor with brains only for the same price, it's a no-brainer (excuse the pun). I will look to Scarlet for shooting video and my Canon 5D II for still photography, even though they both can do both. One doesn't kill the other, as was perhaps implied.

Anyone figure out if they state anywhere whether that "Canon mount" is FD or EF? (Or something else entirely?)

Duncan

Well, it won't be Pana OR Sony that does it. Maybe Canon. But really, don't expect anything from either of those companies...
