How did you get started in "the biz"?

I'm 31 and became interested in video production when I was about 26. Was a journalism major and simply became tired of it. I dabbled in photography while in college, so when I discovered a video production class, I took it out of curiosity and nearly fell in love within the first hour...

Adobe Encore workflow for 720p30 DVD authoring?

Hello, I'm having an issue authoring a DVD in it's native 720p30 resolution from Premiere. When I send it to Encore, Encore wants to set it to 720p23.397. If I try to make the transcode settings 720p30, Encore will set the frame rate at 23.397. What gives? I'm brand new to Premiere and...

Switched from FCP to CS6, life is good!

After debating, researching, demoing, etc. I decided to make a leap and went with CS6. In the past, I've found nearly anything from Adobe to be more of a headache than a help. CS6 is nice, fluid, easy to work with. It's just different enough from Final Cut to make it annoying sometimes, but...

Are there any reccommended shutter speeds for fast action?

I shot some dirt bikes over the weekend with a few guys and one was bumping up his shutter speed. The video was shot at 1080/30p, and I'm just wondering if there's a better way to shoot fast action. I left the shutter at the default setting.

Found a topic I want to do a documentary about, but there's at least one documentary

...already on it and a host of other videos on YouTube about it. Admittedly, I was a little bummed when I discovered the doc was on YouTube, so I wonder if it's worth pursuing. It's about a disease, which is often misdiagnosed. It's an interesting subject to me, but I don't want to "beat a...

Is the Canon 85mm 1.8 overkill for a 60D? video and photo

I'm itching to buy a prime for my 60D. I currently shoot with a Tamron 17-50, but it would be nice to have something with a shallower DOF. I shoot some photos for fun, usually bike races and cars, so more reach would be nice to have. 70-200 is out of my price range for now. I'm just worried...

Think I killed my 430EX...left batteries in there and they leaked.

So, it's been a while since I've used my flash. Took it out of the bag and immediately noticed the battery door had crust in the cracks. &%^*&%^$&**(!!!!!!!!!!! Got the batteries out, got the biggest chunks out, put in some other AA's, and it won't even turn on. There's still some residue in...

    FCP 6.0.6 Choppy playback...what?

I haven't seen this before. Drop footage into a 24pA timeline, playback is choppy. Switched from Safe RT to Unlimited RT, no difference. I can live with it for now, unless it affects the final product. What gives? Now, the only difference is having some Nikon 7000 footage in there...

Developing professionally as a videographer/editor while not working professionally?

Let me preface this by saying it should be a blog post. And I hope this is the right place to post it for helpful responses! :) Anyway, within a month of graduating college I was recruited for a video production job at a local television station. I have no "formal" training in video other than...
