    Magic Bullet Looks

Don't know if you guys have seen this, but Studio Monthly has a demo of the next Magic Bullet software. http://www.studiodaily.com/main/news/feed.rss/8216.html Looks very slick. Very much like DFT's 55mm, but with a really streamlined, intuitive user interface. My main concern is that...

    DVCPRO HD player for Windows?

I'm relaying a problem from someone else that I know very little about, so bear with me. There's a client who's receiving some footage. They wanted it mastered to a full-res archival HD format, so this was done in DVCPRO HD for layback onto tape. Now the problem is that they are complaining...

"Sadly, Too Late" by Team Lower Gatsby

Two friends slam poison on a bet. The terms: one of them will score with their fantasy girl in the next 24 hours... but things quickly deteriorate as the poison starts to have unfortunate side-effects. Click to view! http://www.maydayfilms.com/films/05_TeamLowerGatsby.mov This was our most...

    Contests and competitions

Just curious, does anyone know of a good compilation of currently-running movie/spec contests (like In2, Firefox, Doritos, Intel, etc.)? I've participated in a few and when I have spare time I'd like to do more, but I never find out about them until it's too late. If there's a blog or...

    Do you use makeup artist?

I use one. $100 a day is a pretty good rate, but you can find talented people for about half that, if you look around. If you're around the Carolinas/Georgia, I'd happily recommend someone I worked with who was fantastic... I wish I could have her on all my shoots.

How To Get Started and Stay In The Business

This is a really great thread. It's helpful now and would have saved me a lot of angst and effort three years ago! You need to do good work with a lot of production value. That's really all there is to it. But it doesn't have to take all of your money or the rest of your life. Start small...

Nice small screening room in LA?

Hi everyone, As some of you might know, every year we host the Mayday 24-hour film contest here in LA. The contest is followed by a "nominating convention" where we screen all completed films and select the 12 that will go to the actual screening in June. Unfortunately, the contest has grown...

Moved Across the Earth - short mood doc (HVX)

It's April, and if you've been keeping track, you know that April is a whole different month from February. With that in mind, we invite you to view the April Media of the Month: "Moved Across the Earth". This time we slow it down a bit with a short documentary/mood piece, which we'd like to...

    FCP 5.1.2 import problems

This is a repost from elsewhere but I'm under an extremely tight deadline so I hope no one will mind... THE FOOTAGE: shot to P2. SD, DVCPRO50, squeeze mode, 24pa. I copy the footage first of all to the hard drive. Then I go through Import->Panasonic P2 in FCP and find it. I go into settings...

    Powering one billion lightbulbs

Okay, maybe not a billion, but a hundred or two. My concern here is power, safety, and the basic logistics of "where the hell do all those cords go?"

Music Video - "No One Sees You Like I Do"

I just completed a video for plus/minus (sometimes spelled +/-, sometimes plusminus... it's a mess!). About half of it was shot on the HVX, and the other half on Nikon SLRs with long, long lenses. I'm pretty happy with it overall, considering the microbudget and crew, and it feels great to...

"Insufficient content for edit" with stills

I'm editing a music video that has a LOT of stills edited together in 2-10 frame bursts. I've made all my edits already using a slug, so now have dozens and dozens of little slices of slug, ready to be replaced with the actual stills. But, when I open the stills in the viewer and try to do a...

    anyone using Lightroom?

I picked up the first beta a few months back and wasn't super impressed, but today my Bibble install got corrupted so I decided to give the new version a go. So far, surface-level, I really like it. The interface is a little intimidating, but very clean, smooth, and professional. I haven't...

    Keylight/HVX noise issue

Aha, the dreaded HVX noise problem rears its head at last. Currently I've been hired to fix some truly awful greenscreen keys that came from HVX200 footage. I've shot greenscreen on the HVX myself, and it's been more than fine, so obviously there's something wrong with the footage to start...

DP for music video - Los Angeles, late Sept/early Oct

Hey all, Due to scheduling conflicts I'm looking for a new DP for a music video I'm doing this month. It's a little bit of a slapdash affair/labor of love, and unfortunately there's no pay and little budget, but it is for a band some people have heard of, and they have pretty much guaranteed...

Fastest you've ever written a script?

On a dare, I've just completed an 85-page script in 8 days. It's actually a lot more solid than I ever would have expected. I've written as much as 35 pages in a day before, but that usually ends up being a mistake, and part of a screenplay that I never complete. What's your best streak?
