GH5 How interested are you in a GH6 anymore?

Leaks are not official.
I like to set up the shot. Move them around and have a nice range that is in focus. Adjust F stops. You can turn off AF or not continuous. It won't be hunting.

If you would like to hear the words from a human who's specifically employed by Panasonic Corporation and is wearing a Panasonic t-shirt then understood, but the same type of information can be presented by another human as well, including all of the same exact info being "leaked" in different languages.

The concept of a leak is to have information shared with unofficial parties which then may be presented to the public on purpose or not on purpose.

It's a leak, not a rumor, especially hours before its release.

Those are not the features I'm looking for. Big file sizes, expensive media, nice if you want it but phase detect CAF is what it needed most and didn't get apparently.

Like TDLR filmmaker said the GH6 is Netflix ready. It is going to be a great camera. If people need to be on continuous AF all of the time or have people running towards the camera then running backwards they can get something else. There are ways to deal with this anyway. Manual, turn of continuous AF, set the interview up so they stay in focus if they lean forward, half way push down the shutter, or tap the screen to re focus, etc.

When I'm making a film or doing an interview I'm always looking at the screen to check. Listening to to the audio. When shooting video or taking a picture I try to frame the shot so hopefully I can cut down on cropping later.

Now what he said about the battery life does worry me. But he and other bloggers are going off some "leaked" video that might not even be accurate.

The point is they haven't fixed AF after all the development time they had. In the tests he's using a high frame rate. At a lower frame rate it would preform that much worse. While you don't have people running back and forth in a interview, you do have that happen in other applications. In addition even when the subject is stationary DFD pulses. Whether you can do without it is a different matter than evaluating GH6 against the previous model and current competition in the same price range.

He kept saying it's designed for Netflix. Not sure what that means. I'm assuming that Netflix has some minimum spec requirement and this camera meets it.

I wanted 5.7K 60P, PD power, internal and external record. Think I got those. Didn't need CAF so no loss. Will see what else is provided in a few hours.

It seemed like a cheaply made video with the Japanese guy that "leaked" Think that was a official Panasonic video? Should be more tonight

I'm not sure if it known yet whether the usb c will power the camera. Further more if usb c use used both send video out and power that would mean you would have to choose one or the other. If it is true that the battery only last 40 minutes that would present a problem. You'd either have use buy a battery grip if they sell one or use battery dummy hack.

The Netflix list isn't as strict as it was 5 years go.

Saying it's "designed" for Netflix only means that it will/should land on their approved list because of ProRes (& other formats) and the oversampling from its higher-resolution sensor like the S1H.

Even Panasonic's box camera, BGH1, is on the list and that is a lesser camera than the GH6 (or at least I'd think so).

This makes some camera owners feel good (and it should), but normal people won't know what you're talking about if you mention it.

I'm just going on what I'm seeing and it doesn't look like they fixed AF.

Even when real reviews come out they can say it a pre production model and after that they can say maybe firmware upgrade will improve it. Honestly they've been dragging this out for so long it's getting ridiculous. There are going to be some people who don't use CAF and they be satisfied with whatever they get and everyone else will use a Sony or Canon instead.

To me, it's certain that AF has not improved. You can see the behavior and it's crystal clear from the two videos that I have seen. I'm exhausted as anyone else with this horse, but IMO they are not fixing the AF based on the current arrangement they appear to be in.

Guys, gals...we have to think like business professionals and this is not normal.

Think about other products in your lives (not even video-related) and how they have changed over the years.

You don't go this long without improving.

It's really impossible. Especially for someone so big with so much money.

It says PD power on the spec. Also HDMI would be my choice for external record to my Ninja V. I have every expectation it will be like the GH5M2 for power supply and recording internal and simultaneous external. Downside for me may be ability to serial record internally something I do all the time at the moment. When card 1 is full automatically record to card 2. Now it would have to go from CFexpress to SD for instance requiring the purchase of two card types a be restricted to what at least a V90 could record.

It's as if Panasonic dumped on M43, Olympus soon followed, M43 looked dead when they came out with the S1H FF and Panasonic must have hoped the M43 crowd would follow and rebuy all new L-mount lenses. What idiots! Who are they targeting now? New users? No! Panasonic are answering only a promise to the M43 faithful, come home! They are not abandoned! We're giving you S1H 5.7K recording specs and thick codecs in a GH6 along with the obsolete death from defocus CAF.

The fact is, M43 is pretty much killed off and the market they should have targeted are the existing M43 base who don't want to rebuy all the same focal lengths in Sony and Canon just to get a reliable CAF system. Point for OM-1 who wisely went for added dynamic range, more and better cross type phase detect points across the whole frame, sensible codecs and media slots, and a viewfinder with more pixels.

I cannot fathom why anyone who doesn't want a quality CAF system wouldn't just choose a BMD P4K and record Prores and BRAW internally, and not cobble external recorders and cabling, crippling the very reason for mirrorless which is the convenience of non-rigged handheld operations on the go.

The pocket and the GH6 might have something else in common...the 40 minute battery. :Drogar-Laugh(LBG):

I think its a bit premature to be judging AF this much. There are AF settings that can be tweaked and we haven't seen a wider range of people using it yet.

I do think it will be better. It has to be better. If that is enough is another question. DPAF can sometimes not work perfectly either. The lens can make the difference since the lens still has the motors that move the glass around. We need to see a wider range of lenses makign use of the faster AF to see if it can help. The motors could be a bottleneck as well.

It isn't Panasonic dumping MFT, it's the cartel. GH-6 might fly at $1,700. At $2,300, one might as well switch to Canon or Sony.

And chances are Panasonic is bowing out of the photo-video industry altogether. No more high end pro models, no more full frame, no more MFT. It looks like the end of the ride.

PS. Is focus pulsing on the Netflix "approved" list?

It's not premature. I currently own both the GH5 and GH5S as well as a full complement of PanaLeica/Lumix lenses. I've paid for the right to be critical, and I own it. I've been through at least 3 iterations of DFD improvements. CAF (non-pulsing) is long overdue. The fact that the GH6 will still be DFD seems desperate.

Most of the cameras on the list actually don't have AF.

I'd imagine the type of people making Netflix movies have a crew with people to pull focus and such. Doesn't strike me as someones first choice to rig up a GH6 on set to shoot a Netflix show. I could see a Canon Cinema line or a Red being used... So it would seem a bit disingenuous to argue AF isn't important in the GH6 because it aspires to be a cinema camera for Netflix. That strikes me more of marketing to sell a mirrorless camera.

I'm out of touch with who would be making Netflix movies but I'd think like people who actually have a budget and would be using cinema cameras with a crew to pull focus and such. It's not to say you couldn't film with a GH6 because people have used smart phones, it seems like its more suited to solo work that's lower budget. I'm not knocking it, just doesn't strike me as someones first choice to rig up on set to shoot a Netflix show. I could see a Canon Cinema line or a Red being used...

It would seem a bit disingenuous to argue GH is a cinema camera so AF isn't important. It's not to say you should be using CAF, the class of camera it is the AF should be better.

Every time a list comes out from Sundance or others of the most awarded productions/shows, it's like 90% ARRI.

I don't know exactly how one qualifies to make the list (that information might be available, haven't checked), but it seems like there should be more cameras on it based on a few of the approved options.
