Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I dont know why people are panicking on here for cause of this kid???

I think mainstream Hollywood should be panicking...... Think: All the crappy directors and producers should be very scared.

The reason is... this just makes all of us "Indy Film Makers" look threatening. Think of it as Communisium lurking in the shadows.... and the boys running the show are affraid...hehehe

Guys, this just makes us more threatening...... We have the tool and the talent. Time to take over and tell our own stories.

Don't ya's agree??? All you have to do is ditch the girlfriend and study AE and your NLE. This is sweet.

STUDY IT!!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

lol

Tis is true.

I am confident that this wave of inde film will open a whole new world of filmmakers that can operate outside of the Machine.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Chiming in late...but I loved it!

It had a really slick look to it all...nice cutting!

question for the creator...in the MV, did you compose intending for cinemascope, or did you decide your compositions in post? (just wondering because of all the cuts from the top of the frame to the bottom...was that an artistic choice before shooting, or decided after the fact).

Great stuff! I'd love to see more :D

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Yeah I read his about me page and I guess to "feel better" the kid was shooting since he was 7 when he got his first camcorder (must be nice $$) He shot and shot and started winning awards when he became a teenager.. winning awards at college festivals when he was still in grade school. Hes got grants coming up his wazoo... I think the story actually directly mimics spielbergs.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

AHHHHHHHHHHHH I WANT TO SEE WHAT'S ALL THIS HYPE ABOUT!!!

I'm dying here!!!!

I searched up his name and I found this:

"A Doherty Middle School eighth-grader earned top honors at a recent film festival sponsored by Merrimack College.

The Tambakos Film Festival attracted about 30 entrants who submitted original video productions.

Matt McDermitt received the $100 Award for Excellence prize for his 15-minute film about a little dog who decided he wanted to know what it felt like to be free from his leash. The submission was titled The Hollow.

McDermitt, son of Dave and Mary Ellen McDermitt of Balmoral Street, is very interested in photography and film. He first picked up a camera when he was 6 and started making movies shortly after that.

His was one of three winning entries screened at the festival's awards ceremony last week.

Other local winners included Ted Gesing of Andover, who goes to school in Texas.

This was the first film and video competition hosted by Merrimack College. The festival is named in memory of Demosthenes Peter Tambakos, a 1974 Merrimack graduate who was an aspiring screenwriter at the time of his accidental death. Tambakos' friend, George Furth, a Tony-award winning playwright/actor, established an endowment at Merrimack in honor of Tambakos."

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Boy I hope this lives up to the hype here. I'm dying to see this now! How long has it been since he posted that "two week" notice?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Boy, You sure are giving this kid alot of credit. His work must be really good to get this kind of response on our forum. John, You said contacted him. Was he not interested to join us? I have not seen the clip yet his website still is under construction as of 5:00 on 03/14.
If I was this kid I would be honored to get kind of recognition. I know all we do is just sit here and read posts all day, But I think we are all capable of doing great work with the right tools, hard work and learning the capabilities of our NLE's.
I am looking forward to seeing the product that caused all this outrage."ha,ha,ha"

John, are you willing to try to contact him again to maybe get him to share some pointers with us?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

In my humblest of all opinions, yes, the work we are referencing is first rate and if we said it was done by a 40 year old pro, it would most likely get the accolades it is getting (for those that have seen it!). Being that he's 17 only adds to the fame.

Yes, I am beyond confident any one of us can do this. It is just nice to see this 'quality' of wrok no matter what the age.

He said he would be coming over to DVX upon the finished video.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Can everyone email him again, I'm still dying to see this...

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hi everyone,
I am a long time reader of these fourms but a first time poster. I guess for a while I didn't think I should join the fray, because I didn't have a DVX (although I lust for one so freakin' bad!).

I just wanted to say that I too would love to see this guy's film. I have now read so much about it, that I can't wait to see it.

I too am making a film (I'm just using a used GL-1). It's a sci-fi short all on blue screen. It's going to be in the same vein as the Flash Gordon serials of the 1930's, very retro-future. Well, got to get back to compositing my shots.

P.S. This site has been one of the most informitave and usefull site I've ever seen. Also, everone here seems to be realy helpful and cool.

peace

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

The problem is he made such a stink about not useing his material. Then totaly screwed Alanisas (spell). Can you say sinc rights? :-/

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

There was certainly a question of copyrights there. I took it that his strongly-worded "thou shalt not claim this footage as thine own" speech was probably directed at someone in specific, but it was a little humorous that he was claiming such absolute copyright rights, while having used a copyrighted song as the basis for his video.

For those who want to see it but can't, and can't stand waiting, just turn on MTV and watch any good music video. That's what it looked like -- a professional 35mm music video, only it was shot by a 17-year-old wunderkind.

That sums it up for those wanting to know what the hype is about.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Barry, I havent seen the footage, but did you mean the that the stuff being discussed was 35mm, i thought Tizzy who started this thread said it was done on the DVX100?
