Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Well, i haven't seen the original video for uninvited, but if you check out this guy's other stuff... it's also really good...

I find he just has a really good eye... he knows what makes a good shot. I am also of the opinion that he gets amazing coverage. He probably has a 1:5 shooting ratio or something. I say this because there are some shots he has that just couldn't be planned... like he was directing, let the camera role, and just tried to find what he was looking for and in some parts he got exactly what he wanted and in other parts he got really lucky and got even more. (this luck is not to confuse all of his shots... but there are some shots which he took i'm sure not knowing how great it would look afterwards and was pleasantly surprised at post production, but still the majority of his work is very deliberate)

"but that fact is, he did it and made it look more like film and professional than anything I've ever seen so far."

Bah! Who cares if it looks like film or professional... i just say it looks good on it's own right!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey  :)

Can anyone who has looked at this in detail - explain how he got the  quivering light that gives a hollywood spooky ghostly look on some shots in post editing.
I'll explain - There is a distant shot in the subway around 2min: 38 where the subway lights on the top seem to be breathing & quivering on every frame - I dont think it has been keyframed so there must be some sort of plugin - sorry to be so anal here  - I have seen this effect alot lately & it seems to be the same every time - so I am wondering if there is some sort of light effects / reflections plugin out there.
I love the chards of light reflected every now & then + the overall look is quite stunning.
I think the talent is more in the editing but the shots are very well composed.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

While were on the subject of advice, can anyone point me to info on how he does the quick in and out focus effect? Ive seen it used many times, just never found out how to do it, and it looks nice with the off-focus to flash effect.

Thanx,
Chuck

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

The saphire plugins available for free for 3 weeks contains the plugin "Rack Focus." It is available for AE, Avid, and FCP I believe. Look into it. Or you could go nuts and make a mask in AE and then do some quick blurs and then you can have some serious control. I don't know. Just experiement. If you focus too long on this kids stuff, you'll end up copying it. ;D

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey purpose,

How about the "ghostly gamma" I was describing - any ideas ?

Also I checked out the "making of" & he has some sort of lens attchement on the dvx - is it a wide angle ?
The focus is very clever - if you check out the "bring me to life " clip there is a shot of 3 shower taps that go in & out of focus creating a good dof shot - its hard to figure out if that was post or not ?

Anyhow that gamma color correct effect is more what I am after - its not stealing its inspirational 8)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Im not too familiar with the "Ghostly Gamma" but I know this stuff was color corrected up the ass. Very well done. At attachment could be a wide angle lens attachment. It looked like he had a fairly wide aspect ratio for the that shoot. I'd have to say that a small amount of the focus shifts you see were done in camera. He may have done it slightly in camera, but took it and tweaked it. I got a lot of the 13 ghosts kinda feel with the shaking, quick flashes, the "film flash", and the focus flicks. This kid studies things he likes, and duplicates them well. I'd suggest you just play with every tool you have. If you think Ghostly Gamma will create the effect you want. Just mess with it. Thats all we can do, Experiment and Tweak.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Purpose

I made the term "ghostly gamma" up for this post as a description for the color correction effect on the subway shots.
So do you think its just a mere color correct tool going haywire on every frame ?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

What lens attachment are you talking about?  HAHA My cam has the exact same look. It's actually just a UV Filter with a silver ring. Crystal Optics brand(at least that's the one I have). It's kinda weird seeing the making off, since he's got the same bag and same silver UV filter. I felt like he was using my camera or something.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

NOt sure what you guys are using, but this kid used Vegas (I emailed him and invited him over). All of those effects are possible in POST.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Yeah, thought you would like that.

It is true though. All the blur/color correction effects can be done by anyone with practice and the right tools. Wghat impressed me is HOW he used it.

He has a brilliant eye for composition, everything els eis just gravy. The best was the blurred cars in traffic. He takes pride, and time in his art. Deffinently something to aspire to.

I dont feel threatened by him though. It actually just fitres me up even more to keep at what it is I do.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I was thoroughly impressed.  :D

My first thought ... "My camera can do THAT?"

My second though ... "How would I do that?"

My third thought ... "Let's go out and try!!"

Stupid exams, I'm still stuck on the second thought.

Composition  is great. What really impressed me was the look of the footage. From what he does in post he could film a garbage can and we'ed all be like "wooooowww ...."

I'm so excited, knowing nothing I learn so much from watching any good piece.

I didn't know that was an Alanis Morisette song, I was like.."wow the song is great too!!" hahaha

Oh here is a question, from the looks of the camera, and the making of video it looks like he wasn't filming with an anamorphic lens, or had letterbox on, or squeeze, did he crop the footage? And export it 16:9?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Help! >:(This link doesnt work for me. Whats the deal. I've never been so excited to see a clip before.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Nevermind, I just saw where the site is being redesigned and wont be up for another 15 days. Aaarrgh! >:(

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

15 days?? Man that does suck. He might put the completed version on there though. When its back up check out "Wings" too, also DVX.

From what he has told me and others I know he lives at home literally living off checks that come from film fests he wins. He edits all day and it took him several months of tweaking to create what you saw in that video. Patience, dedication and experience.. there is simply nothing that beats it.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Yeah... all that post stuff he's done is probably done with AE mixed with Vegas (if that is what he uses)

AE is an entirely open ended program, even without plugins... software like AE is designed not to limit the creative ability of the artist... if you mix masks or filters or effects a certain way, there's no end to the kinds of results you can get...

Also, to move the blur around and change the focus and everything, would be done using masks and keyframing probably... just putting layers of effects and similar video and all kinds of stuff over one another until you get the desired effect.

Trick is to just play around with it as much as possible. My friend actually had a shot with cars rushing by the main character in his movie that looked amazing... the shot remains unfinished simply because it was cut from the film, but it's a kickass effect and not too difficult to figure out.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

He has definately perfected all the techniques and styles of the current look of music videos but there are also some purely original techniques in the video as well. For example the shots of the city streets full of cars is great because it looks like he took the time to go in, frame by frame, and selectively smear and blur portions of the image. The result is something similar to a ultra slow shutter speed but slightly more random and unique. A technique I havent seen used before. It gives it a subtly fresh look. Very well done.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

the blurred cars is most likely done using an AE plugin called Twixtor. It offers motion blurring just like what you see there. I"ve used it before on a project with good result. It looks like a lot of scenes with fake DOF is actually just a rough feathered mask around the talents and everything outside it is blurred.
