Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Great job, Matt, very impressive!

I have GOT to get the DVX soon. I sort of hover on the outskirts of this board because I don't have the camera and feel limited in my ability to contribute. But, I had to congratulate Matt on a super job and making me "need" this camera more than ever in the process. :)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hi, Matt, great work for any age to be sure. Extra special because of the artistic 'maturity' you possess at your age.

Your comments on color correction illustrate a point which beats me about the head and shoulders everytime I shoot and edit a new project. There absolutely is no substitute for correct lighting, exposure and composition in the actual shoot. So many try for the 'just-get-it-and-we'll-fix-it-in-post' type acquisition, when your work proves that garbage in:garbage out & beauty in: really beautiful out.

I do have a question as to your creative process. All of your shots seem to indicate quite a bit of pre-planning. Do you use intensive storyboarding? If so, how do you accomplish this?

Again, great work,
Chico

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Woohoo! Thanks! :D

I'm hoping to do less post work for my next video...

I have never used storyboards in the sense that I have never put anything on paper. However, I always have a clear image of what shots I need "in my head."
Many of my ideas are spur of the moment - given the fact that the locations i use are everchanging in terms of lighting / people. I find storyboards limiting unless you're using them for "key" shots.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey Matt.. welcome finally!

Good work, and its nice to see you here, looking forward to seeing your next project.

Really, so the 'focusing effects' as they have been referred to were all done using the cameras focus - do you use any focus aids?

I suspect...

I suspect...

when matt said no plugins - he didn't mean no post effects - just no plugins...(apart from twixtor)

the after effects base filters are sufficiently controllable to accomplish those selective defocus effects easily (in some of the wide shots you can see the matte lines)

so technically speaking that's not a plugin...

matt please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Finally was able to see what Matt's work looked like. I think we can all safely say the kid doesn't suck. ;D

Clearly he's been influenced by the MTV generation of directors. His post work is absolutely brilliant and directional choices are great for video work. What's really impressive is he managed to create as good a look in his work as the MTV stuff minus the production budget. (Speaking of which, how much do these things cost you to produce, Matt? Or is everything donated?)

I'd really like to hear a "how to" on how you managed to create those blurring and depth of field effects in post. Was After Effects used? Was it Combustion? And which version of the program was used and how did you go about your work-flow, etc. Also, about what you did in camera, did you shoot with the anamorphic lens? Wide angle? Or just with the standard that came with the camera? (not too much to ask, right? lol..)

Welcome to the board Matt.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

<<Matt did you get permission for the song?>>

We all know the answer to this question. I am sure many of us have been asked the same on our own clips. And usually we don't respond. Lets skip this question and continue our talk about Cinematography. We don't need to get into legal issues. Someday Matt will be able to afford famous composers for his work, there is no doubt about that.

Well guys after about a 2 week wait I finally got to see the clips too. There is no doubt that Matt is gifted, but I probably wasn't as impressed as most of you were. I think I was most impressed with the Wings clip and the compositions then the music videos. But for 17, is very good stuff!

You guys really need to just stop and think what you are looking at. Many of the effects can be done in FinalCut Pro, AE or any NLE. You can simply blur a 2nd track and mask it with the one below it choosing any shape in FCP. You can also create fake outa focus effects and pen point areas out of focus to create a fake more-narrow depth of field in AE with the paint tools. Choose an overcast day and get your self a wide-angle adapter. If this type of work impresses you, I would also get a book called "The 5 C's of Cinematography". It covers editing and camera work.

Get a hot chick and take more time finding your locations and you will be amazed with the difference. I will probably have some tutorials on some of these effects after I redesign my website. Stay tuned.

Keep up the great work Matt!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Have to say I loved the POST work in terms of CC.

But what I am most impressed about is the composition and tight editing. Sorry to say it'll take more than an overcast day and a hot chick. 17 or not, this work is impressive no matter what the age. It's some of the best work I've seen in any category of "Struggling Filmmakers".

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Right.. I must say, i iddn't really pay as much attention to the DOF effects as some here. I was really taken by the shots framing and edits. The DOF effects are few and not nearly as powerful as the aforementioned elements.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

First off.. no need to create that DOF effect in post.. you can do it with the DVX.

2nd.. from edit to composition this kid has some serious talent, the magic in the video isnt from post effects.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

At the focal lengths used in the video you can't get that level of DOF with the DVX. Trust me on DOF ;-)

Well hopefully this will get people talking again in the homemade mini35 thread. After all dont you want to be able to do this instantly and optically? Oh yeah and if you want to should 2.35 we are currently working in a anamorphic element into the mini35 design to do that optically as well. Thats full CCD 2.35 images (twice the lines as before). Think of it as the "cineascope/35mm film lens adapter" for your DVX.

See you there.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

lol.. sorry Brett.. but I have done it. Im talking about the rack focus in the bathroom.. btw.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I second that Jarred. I have pulled off some really nice Rack Focus shots in my 'studies'. I think people underestimate what you pull off 'in camera'. Its a matter of setting up the shot, rehearsing it and executing it.

'Flares' are easy as well when using the IRIS.

i agree with mark.

i agree with mark.

the work is solid. but a lot of it post.
of course you can do the rack focuses - the issue is the selective depth of field effect which simulates a swing-tilt lens - which you cannot do in camera....(unless you're using some fairly hefty adaptors)

either way - whether it is post or not - it is not bad "looking" product by any means.

it's just entirely unoriginal.

meaning if someone 17 went out and painted a Monet exact replica what would people say - well people who can't paint well would say "wow" and people who can would say "cool - now go paint something original".
