it's just entirely unoriginal. Meaning if someone 17 went out and painted a Monet exact replica what would people say - well people who can't paint well would say "wow" and people who can would say "cool - now go paint something original".

Im a hack oil painter as well and if I saw someone who replicate a Monet I would be blown away. :P

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Greetings everyone. Long-time listener, first-time caller. Just got my DVX about two weeks ago and have not had much time to experiment. But the biggest thing that sticks out to me with Matt's work is not DOF or color, etc, but that it's from a $3000 camcorder. I mean, geez, video! And that goes for most of the clips I've seen on here. Of course, my DVX replaced a S-VHS camera :-X, so you can imagine I about wet myself when I saw what this thing can do!

Great work Matt, and kick-butt forum everyone.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I just got my dvx the other day and these clips are most inspiring. Anyone know how to do the titling like matt has done for the bring me to life clip (2nd in the series I believe).

Was it done using after effects?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Bravo Matt. :) A beautifully shot piece. You have a wonderful control over your camera (movement & composition). Your color grading and editing was very nice.
You can tell that he had a clear idea of what he wanted and I think that the piece seems fully realized. I think it's great that he's pulling off this caliber of work at such a young age.

Keep up the good work Matt! It certainly is inspiring. ;)

Hi everybody, I'm actually Bret Erskine's (?evil?) twin on the east coast NYC. lol
Hey Bret!!!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Rack focus? No I said DOF. Im sure you know the difference. BTW SOME of thoughs rack were post. Go frame by frame.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Oh man whats up?! Write me off thread and tell me whats new.

Damn Im sorry if it feels like Im selling it but because the homemade mini35 has a ground glass screen in it its possible to modify it to work as a swing/shift lens adapter as well. Check out more info on this idea at www.dvinfo.net

Brett

"No! ain't no one understand the words that are coming out of your mouth"

:D

DOF - Rack Focus

Can't have one really without the other :P

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

To a degree, yes. They are different in many ways when it comes to DOF characteristics but I dont want to go over filmmaking 101 when this was simply a misunderstanding started when you used the term DOF to discribe a rack of focus. The terms cant always be interchanged and it just through me off. Its important to be acurrate with what terms one uses because we are all hear to learn and if the wrong term is used it may send alot of people in the wrong direction. Anyways enough of that. Back to the purpose of this thread...what was it...oh yeah...Matt great work!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Thanks everyone! :D <-----------

When I was shooting Uninvited I wasn't thinking "oh boy this is great! Something like this hasn't been done before!" It's rather cliché, I know this, whatever. I have finer plans for my next project. It was another learning experience and was A LOT of fun. The shots with the rack focus (fg to bg) were done entirely IN CAMERA. It's not post - that would have taken too long and would have looked "iffy." Sometimes the shift is so fast and subtle it could look like a post effect? The DOF is obviously artificial in any shot where the background is less than 4 ft from the actress. I used a simple keyframed mask in AE for a few of the shots. The rest required a technique using 2 or more mattes. Some DOF was natural too! :o

The behind the scenes vid is back up. I should post the making of Bring Me To Life - it's more interesting.

Time to write you off this one. :P

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

God damn it Ive been waiting forever to see this clip and It wont play,

Whats wrong, All i get is a Picture of the quicktime logo inside a little piece of film, like a film strip thing, it wont play the video, the other videos on the site work but not that one...

What the hell

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Wow really? I thought for sure some of the racks of focus shots were done in post due to both their incredible speed and the fact that sometimes I saw the background go out of focus while the forground stayed in focus the whole time (ie the first couple of seconds of your video. Maybe I couldnt tell if focus shift a little in the forground due to it being compressed on for the web. Either way I am very impressed! I love how you made that rack in focus that fast and came to hard stop in focus. Must have taken a few takes. Or did you play it in reverse? Good stuff.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Oh also, I did check out the wings one, The lighting on the piano is real nice,

I dont know if any one asked this yet but Im not one those people that has time to read about 7 pages of posts to find and answer so Im just gonna ask it any ways:

Did you use the Dvx100 or the Dvx100a... did you use any attachments, what did you do your widescreen with?

Thx..

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

oooh, the dreaded 'bandwidth exceeded' message rears its ugly head. well matt, take it as a sign of your popularity!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

::)April 1st I get another 50GB's bandwidth. I'll see about upgrading to 100GB's per month seeing as the site was up only for a number of days. There was a link added today to the "making of" on the homepage. Information about my next project should be available by the time the site is back up.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Mark I only asked about the song permission because Matt had at his website a big warning himself! The writer of this song should be getting paid 5000+ views. it might pay his/ hers rent!

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I thought as long as one is not selling it for profit it was all good? or is this an exhibtion issue?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Check out Triggerstreet and ask them. How would Matt feel if I used his images with my buddies soundtrack to it. then put it on a website without permission. Plus we all know the power of music in film. It tells us how to feel. That is why they give Oscars for it. Without such a great song would his images have the same impact?

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

These are indeed valid points Elvis. I never thought of it in that context. Wow. Hey, Matt? You have permission? :-/ :o
