Will the new offering from Blackmagic convince Canon to liberate the HDMI on the 5d3

I ask as I just checked the 'what's new' here on dvxuser and there wasn't a single thread on the first page relating to Canon Full Frame cameras. The buzz is not there. So will they consider allowing us the use of clean HDMI out?

edit: there's buzz, I know that. But not what I would have expected, given the groundbreaking reception of the Mk2.

BMD just stole their video market.
If they want to continue to play their hybrid card in this market segment, they are going to have to step up to the plate.

I doubt they will make any MKIII firmware changes but it may prompt them to lower the cost of the C series cameras. I'm looking at using both the MKIII and blackmagic cameras on my film.

I don't think Canon cares too much in the same way Apple doesn't really care that FCPX is getting destroyed by the competition. The companies are too big and the product appeals to a niche group of people relative to their entire audience.

Not sure if you noticed, but that Black Magic cine cam works well with FCPX in it's logging function. So what do we have here? A camera that is affordable and gives a RAW image and an NLE with a different mindset while affordable, in which both work together. Think about that. Apple and Black Magic worked together on this camera. Now think about if Apple backs this camera and it's future development...Remember the slogan "Think different"? Hummmmm.....

I think every maker should feel the threat: if BM comes out, 6 months from now, with an APS-C version for $4K (the bigger sensor could add $500 in manufacturing costs, not much more), they would get a very very big chunk of the video market - btw if anybody is interested in developing such a camera, I'm very willing to work on it (to bring it to market before BM or the dbolex guys do; it's not utterly silly: they're currently distracted trying to meet demand for their cameras)

There is definitely a strategic partnership going on here between Apple, Blackmagic and Zeiss. (BM can't even say Nikon mount, they have to say "ZF" for instance...). I wouldn't even be surprised if there is R&D money flowing between them.

Do you think liberating the HDMI out of the 5d3 would be a step in that direction? Or will it take a whole new approach?

I don't think they simply offer a firmware update. I think it's a signal flow issue. I'm pretty the the image comes off the sensor and is dropped to 4:2:0 before it gets to the chip for the HDMI output. So a 4:2:2 output firmware update would be digitally converting a 4:2:0 signal to 4:2:2, not much benefit in that.

What nonsense. The 5D3 is a professional stills camera with a nice sideline in HD video. The HDMI socket is for watching the stills you just took on an HDTV. Wonderful as the specs are on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera they do not include taking still photographs. Most readers/writer in this forum are so self-centred & imagine that they think that video is Canon's main design centre for their DSLRs. The Cinema Eos 1D C is the only Canon DSLR where video is the lead feature. If the Blackmagic Cinema Camera suits what you want to do better then go ahead & buy one but don't imagine that Canon will be making changes to the 5D3 in response to this announcement.

It's red that has a problem

Way less resolution, smaller sensor, less dynamic range, slower framerates, and less features. I think RED will be just fine. If anything at a glance, the specs are closer to Alexa.

That said, it's their first camera, so I'm expecting issues (but I would love for it to be successful).

Well, like a good totalitarian regime's state run media, every mention of the BM camera has been erased from Reduser net. In fact it has simply ceased to exist.

Since it doesn't exist, no problem.

Yeah, there's not much talk of it on there anymore. A search found this pretty quickly though: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?77310-Questions&p=989132&viewfull=1#post989132

I'm not trying to sound like a RED fanboy by linking that. I'll use any camera, and I think Blackmagic has the potential to really change things if it doesn't flop, and I'm sure RED knows this. However, they're still in entirely different markets in my mind.

Every thread I found had been either closed or erased. Good. At least there is some dialogue happening, even if it happens to be a few meager posts in the middle of a 53 page thread.

Well it is their site and they were in the middle of their own large announcements which continued to be spammed with new users posting the BMC over and over.

Looks like a great camera but far from even a scarlet, but if it is all you need and have been waiting for wonderful I wish you all the best!

This camera will have some of the big guys rethinking their strategies, but their companies are far from being at risk as well as camera's like the Mk3 which is primarily a stills camera.

All depends on how much cash you have and what features you need to work smoothly in your chosen area of this rather large and diverse field of work.

Play nice and keep on shooting!

I don't think Canon cares until you can't turn a corner in LA without bumping into someone shooting on the BM Jesus-cam. If Hollywood responds to this, then you better believe Canon will move to react, but otherwise I don't see it yet.

HDMI from current EOS DSLRs is truely native 8bit 4:2:2, the only problem is it's not full screen 1920x1080, and it has UI element overlayed on top. No clean signal.
