Will the new offering from Blackmagic convince Canon to liberate the HDMI on the 5d3

I don't think this is as bad as the apple situation was: Canon has a big enough market that it could go on developing its sensors and be competitive; but with this generation they screwed up: they made a mistake (my guess is that the ADC are the weak link), and they'll either adjust the price, look for alternative markets (clean HDMI-out, collaboration with hackers/modders), or just be relegated to a corner and suffer

My take is that Canon should activate the HDMI on the 1Dx as well as open the door for the Magic Lantern people to "find" the ability to output full & clean over HDMI on the MKIII. In this day and age, rationing data is not cool and does not look favorable in the consumer's eyes. Also, the cinema products are priced way higher, so I it is not like me (a 5D purchaser) will say, well, I think I will step up to a $12,000 camera just to get that HDMI output...

I can see their reasoning, but I think it is more than "conservative", it is foolish. They are trying to port the enthusiasm they created with the 5DMKII into higher level cinema products. But the crowd that wants the 5D the most will not go there in price. The HDMI is throwing a bone to this crowd because they purposfully did not improve the detail level in the video image to protect the higher products.

By the time the 5DMKIV comes out there will be $5,000 RAW cameras and the mojo will be on down the line for them. These companies need to get with the program that you can not wait 4 years between cameras and incrementally improve the product. It is just a plain bad investment for me to buy it when the camera (from a video point of view) is not even "today's" technology. Look at the AF-100's price. I bet you would be lucky to get $2,800 for one on the used market. That is almost half its value in one year.

As one can see, I am kind of unhappy with Canon as I am sticking with my 5DMKII & 7D without huge, clear reasons to go to the MKIII. And I just can not deal with turning the focus wheel the opposite direction on a Nikon camera!

For those using simple stats and static tests in Canon vs Nikon... on youtube is a couple of well rounded real world tests about the still image features on both cameras. The Canon held it's own in just about every test. It's new 61 point AF system along with a smaller pixel count made it much more useful in run and gun situations. To me, these tests are more meaningful than the paper statistics and static charts.

They will offer a video test soon.
I don't care if Canon makes the HDMI out clean. If Magic Lantern can clean up the internal codecs output, then not much reason for it for most people. If not, then what 90% of the people who use this camera for, (professional photo and eng) don't want the hassle of an external recorder. Goes for the D800 as well. If Magic Lantern can give you what you want (clean HDMI out), great, if not, not a deal killer for most people.
