The holdup is a mix of protection of the more expensive cameras that have more options and of idiot proofing the camera which is primarily targeted to people who do not really know what they are doing.

No PAL std is a nightmare

No PAL std is a nightmare

I was thinking OK, no big shake will go with the 24p, then I thought what do you actually shoot for slo-mo, mixing 50p and 24p together all seems badly thought through.:furious3: especially when we dont even have the option in europe to have a 24p and 60p unit. All a bit maddening and I guess after all the fuss majority of us will stick with the GH13 in europe, unless the high ISO is amazing and the stills are far superior, somehow I'm getting that sinking feeling.

Well, AVCHD is really just a delivery format. It would be silly, IMHO, for Panasonic to insist that GHx users perform acquisition in a delivery format only. To see why this is silly, let's analyze what's happening on the stills side of the cam -- photographer has a choice to use either an acqusition (RAW) or a delivery (JPEG) or, gasp, both formats at the same time to suit his or her particular needs at the current moment. The acquisition format is not much different, if not the same, as one used by "pro-level" cameras like say 5DmkII, "image quality" notwithstanding. So, while a GHx "photo" user is expected to be smart enough to not try to upload and share a RAW file on Flickr, it is somehow a given that a GHx "video" user is only witty enough to play back footage on their TV. I am not suggesting that GHx necessarily needs a RAW video codec implementation, but that a choice for quazi-acquisition format needs to exist on the video side as well as it does on the photo side. At the very least, this means a user choice of framerates, bitrates and compression schemes. As demostrated by GH13 project, all these targets are easily achievable. So what is the holdup?

CANON DSLRs (even the entry level 550D) support PAL and NTSC frame rates without regional restrictions. So why is it such a problem for PANASONIC to do the same. Maybe its to protect EU dealers from US/Japanese gray imports. But even if its idiot proofing, unsophisticated users of the EU model have a problem. They have now a camera which produces footage in two different broadcast standards (24p and 50i) which are incompatible and not easy to combine in a NLE.

Because all unsophisticated users use Non Linear Editing Systems ...
Unsophisticated users will never need to combine the two frame rates.

And what is the target audience of MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, Powerdirector or Premiere Elements ? If a customer invests $1500 in a camera or camcorder he possibly will also use one of these entry level NLEs.

Agree with all the comments about giving us options even if they're not official delivery specs.

But even if panasonic are determined to stick with official specs, why not give us 25p in 50i like they did with the GH1? Taking away an option that we've already got is crazy. I know people are speculating you might be able to get this by setting shutter to 1/40th but that's really not ideal.

Even better, let us hack the GH2 - then everyone's happy!

Until then, GH13 for me.

25p is must if one plan to make any pro work within EU.

You nailed the problem: Panasonic does not consider GH2 a pro camera...
Further, it is considered a still camera with video recording added functions.
It is funny to see that no one seems interested in camera spec, but only to get the maximum flexibility out of it in terms of video use.

Announcement of AF100 indicates they understood video was an actual selling point for GH1 rather than just an add on, maybe with GH2 they're trying to walk the thin line between providing improvements to not disappoint customers expectations without cropping excitement and demand for AF100?

I think it's a mistake that you haven't clarified that this relates to the PAL model of GH1. As it is phrased now people in NTSC markets will vote as well and skew the result.

The "poll" results cannot be skewed as they are missing the key element that would enable one to draw statistical inferences: the lack of random sampling. There is no way to conclude from this poll anything like "42% of potential GH2 buyers are being missed because of the lack of 25p capability in the GH2". At best, one could conclude something like "62 guys on an online community said they wouldn't buy a GH2 that didn't have 25p".

This may be much ado about nothing, as the production GH2s could well have 25p capability. Until it is actually released, we can't know, website specs notwithstanding.

You guys who want 25P should really do a mass email campaign to request this feature. Better to do it now rather then wait until the camera is released.

Personally, I do not think that it'll help.
I remember only one case of firm reacting to strong feedback and making some change - Canon 5DmkII. It took them so long.
Same company later completely ignored feedback :-)
And never use email. They ignore it.
Phone directly and speak to managers.

Almost every feature requested in the firmware petition over a year ago made it into the GH2. (MJPEG at 24P request was ignored)

I think it's a sign that they listened. If enough people make noise they'll get the picture.

I hope they do... I got at least 10 guys here in Australia saying that they won't be buying if there is no 25p

I would certainly think twice before buying a GH2 sans 25p, but the overall picture/codec issue would be the main reason for or against buy a GH2 over a GH13.

So why do you actually think you need 25p? Are you actually burning 1080p @ 25 FPS blu-rays? That is the only reason you need 25p. Even deinterlaced 1080i has plenty of resolution for DVDs. That is what Panasonic is expecting PAL countries to use.

If you want to stream it then 24p will work just as well as 25p even in PAL countries. As long as the refresh rate of the monitor is twice that of the source material you won't see any stuttering or uneven playback.

How many people on this board actually burn commercial PAL Blu-rays? I would be surprised if it is more than a handful.

Have you ever tried shooting with 24p under 50Hz Lighting? Please do so and report back.

And 1080i simply sucks for any post work. 1080 25p is what we need!

Hi,

Syncing with other 25p material.... That's a massive problem for a start, also strobing from 50Hz electrics is a serious problem. I wish people for whom the lack of 25p is not an issue would stop making out as if it's not such a big deal, It's all relative. I shoot live events with many cams, all running at 25p, imagine what an unbelievable pain it will be for me to "pre treat" all the GH2 footage just to be able to use it in my shoots. What's so annoying is having invested greatly in the micro 4/3 format fully expecting Panny to at least continue to offer 25p (50i wrapper) they suddenly drop it and subsequently me.... It's not that us Pal users can't move on to another product and system, just a serious shame and waste of time and money for many who invested in the GH1 and wanted to continue working in the format easily.

Panny seem to be sleep walking into a disaster with this. But it's so easy to change!!!???

Regards.

I do it all the time - never had any problems (pal land). The key factor to avoid 50hz flickering is not the amount of frames per second. If you work with the right shutter speed (...1/50; 1/100) everything is fine...

What if you wanna work with the *wrong* shutter speed ;)
