I'm not holding my breath; Panny have already made it clear they don't want people tinkering with these things. If it were as simple as giving someone a body to play with, if we could just do that and fix these problems, I'd do it tomorrow. Unfortunately it isn't that simple.

Ironically, the "simpler" Panasonic GF2 will come with true 1080p @ 25 FPS in a 1080i wrapper. Panasonic is just stupid if they think true 1080i/50 is better than 1080i/25 PSF. I can't fathom why they didn't give the GH2 the same 1080i mode that the GF2 has. Unless they really are expecting us to hack the GH2 and get 1080p/50 or 1080p/60.

Yes they are, but it's still a pain to shoot in 24 - lighting and video displays flicker, you end up doing a bunch of extra processes to get to locally-compatible DVD, on set monitoring becomes difficult (particularly with video links) etc. Essentially it costs you all the little conveniences we've enjoyed here for decades by having a unified film and video frame rate.

Shooting at 24 is doable, but it's a very significant imposition and not really a practical solution.

I really just wish they would all get together and pick one format. Sadly, that will never happen.

yupp.. atleast we now have the same resolution.

Don't forget that many plasmas and LCD-TVs can't handle 24hz in a proper way, including new models but I guess it's fine for most of us.

Ok! The delivery of the European GH2 is delayed because of some late tech changes. (Link)

Let's hope they changed the cinema mode to 25p. Nobody knows, but that would freaking rock!

I was planning to shoot 24p for my projects with a shutter of 50. That does the trick on the 7D at least over here where lights are 50Hz.

That said, I would buy this cam without 25p, but I wouldn't really take it on set if I'm doing work here in Lebanon. I Like 24p, but 25p is necessary here for production. I will make (hopefully) beautiful images on the GH2 once i get it, but I doubt I will make any money.

Hi... I'm in Israel with the GH2. I tend to aim for theater screenings but on worst case
Transcoding to 25p looks just fine..
*btw - why people say that 25p judders more than 24p?
24p judders enough !

Hey Roei, greetings from lebanon ;)

To tell you the truth, I like the strobiness that happens with 24p. I haven't seen any funkiness on 25p, but I'm not that experienced to spot things unless I look for them.

This is reminding me of the time I was looking for a way to convert 25-24 etc, if I really liked the GH2, and tried to use it on a set, I guess I would do the whole thing 24p at a shutter of 1/50th, and then just speed up the final. I've slowed down 25p to 24 and there isn't much of a difference.

Again, a painful realization (that may slap our efforts in the face, the irony of it all) is that the audience probably won't realize if they're not told before. We do all this nit picking for the ultimate goal of being 'invisible'.

Have you managed with the HDMI yet? Really is the make it or break it for me. I have got so many mixed reviews about the codec, I don't even know if people are talking about the 24p or the regular FHD modes. The GH1 pre-hack was doing ok for me as long as I had light, post-hack it was doing better, not great, but better.

I hope I'll try HDMI tomorrow.
about the 24/25p-
I thought transcoding from 24 to 25 makes it a bit slower which
Is better than making it faster.. you've said it's the other way round, no ?

24 to 25 will result in a slightly faster cut. Not noticeable but the runtime will differ.
25 to 24 slows things down.

I have never tried transcoding, I just mean that the only advice I got from anyone was to just conform the 23.976 (24p) to 25. It will simply play back faster. The issues that may arise are matching the final audio track, there are many sophisticated audio pitch/tempo algorithms that can speed an audio track up without affecting pitch. Even though, I think the very small amount of speeding up will result in a negligible change in pitch should you decide to simply speed up the audio track. I think it's a 4% change in speed.

But yeah I wouldn't even transcode, that'll do funky things in between frames. I'd just speed up or slow down.

Sorry to ask about the HDMI, everyone I'm sure has been doing the same. You would be a hero if you manage with that. A near inarguable plus to the GH2 confirmed by you :)

Cheers man, I'd be willing to try some speeding up/slowing down versus frame rate conversions side by side if you'd like.

damn! but slower looks better.. :(
well until i'll need turning a final result to 25p there's no need to worry about it now.

Hey Troy, congratulations on the new Panasonic. I have a filmmakers training program in Salem, Oregon this summer that I thought you might be interested in. Incredible staff of teachers including a director of "ER" and "CSI NY". The program is two intensive weeks of narrative filmmaking and working with actors. Take a look at this link:

Let us know if you would like more information.
