David Coverdale (+ Glenn Hughes on bass and the vocals). After the California Jam, Blackmore departed and was replaced by Tommy Bolin, who died from OD at the very end of 1976. Then the band split until 1984's MKII reunion album "Perfect Strangers". Coverdale formed Whitesnake in 1978, sometimes touring with his ex-Deep Purple band mates Jon Lord (keyboards) and Ian Pace (drums).

And speaking of drums. Ginger Baker passed away this past Sunday at the age of 80.

After impressing Tim Rice with "Child in Time", Ian Gillan appeared on the original "Jesus Christ Superstar" recording in 1970 and, off his performance, was offered the starring role in the movie as well. He then asked for the whole band to appear. The role went to Ted Neely.
