Alexander "Sasha" Lerman was a Yale graduate and a professor of foreign languages and linguistics at the University of Delaware.

But, in his previous life, he was a ultra popular vocalist with an ultra popular Soviet Band, the Jolly Good-fellows. "I will never approach you and you do likewise" (my almost literal translation) was a megahit of the early 70's. Lerman immigrated from the USSR in 1975 and his performances were promptly erased by the Soviet sensors.

 
Muslim Magomayev (1942-2008) was an Azeri born performer, who undergone classical training at the Italian La Scala (literally , the school) but became a superstar in the Soviet "lush sound" of the 1960's and 70's. As the popular styles changed and he aged along the way, his TV appearances declined but he still remained a glorious singer. My parents went to see him in Chicago some time in the late 1980's. In the 00's, he maintained his own web site, where he even personally talked to the fans.

Precious Wilson was born in Jamaica in 1957, joined Eruprion while still in her teens, the lead singer left, the band moved to Germany to work for/with Frank Farian, the boss/producer of Boney M (and a decade later, more infamously of Milli Vanilli)

"One way ticket" (an original hit for Neil Sdaka) was there Euro megahit (huge in the USSR too)


But the Soviets put out a Russian language version too.
