7D Wedding I did for a friend (song by Alicia Keys)

Hehe- nice but not always wise to advertise unlicensed wedding music... Not that the RIAA ever catches up with WEVA folks but it can happen once in a blue moon.

... not always wise to advertise unlicensed wedding music...
Agreed Noah. I don't know why some people find the idea of having to actually pay for copyright material to be such a difficult concept, after all, most of us would be pretty peeved if someone used the stuff that we'd slaved-over to create without so much as a thank you.

Well he said he did it for a friend, no different than 50% of the artsy videos on vimeo honestly. If you use licensed tracks for paid work you're pretty dumb however.

Copyright infringement is not determined on whether the project was for profit or not, and I really don't understand why the argument keeps coming up that it's okay as long as you aren't making money off of it.

Look, we all get that it's bad but this is why people don't want to post work here. If you've never done it, great...but why does every thread with copyrighted music automatically become a moral/ethical discussion when we're a FILMMAKING board. Discuss his shots, his edit, if his music fits, etc.

exactly... Kegan...yall act like u never DLed music u didnt pay for or DL movies u didnt buy...This is a non paid favor for a friend...I'll give alicia keys credit in the description then if yall feel ur moral compass going crazy

Discuss his shots, his edit, if his music fits, etc.

I find the visual effect really atrocious and amateurish. There is something very wrong with the color balance (Frankly I think he graded the footage that way). The shots was very shaky and there are not many varieties such as sliders or steadicam. I would like to be constructive and also say what I like about the video, however there wasn't much I like about it except maybe for the music...

If you have a contract where the Music you are using has been purchase by the client and is being used for personal reasons and you exclaim yourself out of any copy right infringement you are basically covered, especially since this is a private viewing and not something for sale and the public. Furthermore you can use it as you have a contract signed by the client, at worst you remove the music at best your contract covers you in this grey area.

Now onto the actual production of this video.

Very shaky camera, bad white balance and honestly looks unprofessional.
I'm more than sure your friends were happy and feel you did a great job, and honestly for helping someone out I think it's fine. The problem is though where do you draw the line? Do you want to continue working as a "friend" or charge accordingly so you can continue to grow as a company.

Personally I believe if the project was done for no money and is not of a certain quality I would just keep it under wraps and not show it to the world.

Bad lighting, very bad shaky camera, poor white balance, cheap effects, etc. all scream very amateur.

Here's a great wedding video done, imo you need to make it more personally, something that connects the Audience to the actually bride and groom

Hi

If you violate copyright in a profession that depends on it, getting called on it is fair game. A free wedding video for a friend can be a tough ethical decision.

In my opinion for a 3rd wedding video this is a good job he should be proud of.

For a favor to a friend this is a good job.

On the absolute scale I would say for a low budget video it is okay.

Some white balance issues. Color grading is artistic decision, I am okay with it. I believe it was grading not correction.

Most importantly I enjoyed the video.

I don't know the OPs other posts but it seems for a new guy to stick his neck out and post his work some comments are put in overly harsh terms.

My opinion, I would prefer people making videos of this quality to be able to come, post and learn rather than be crushed. Lots of the video posted here are from very talented professionals and that's great. I believe there should be room for new, learning people to post and be judged by a different standard. This is DvxUser, not Alexa user after all. If you can't find something positive to add to a post I think you are needing to reconsider your community spirit. Let's lighten up. Please consider this a general comment and not aimed at any particular post - because it isn't. I just jumped on here to get this off my chest.

Best regards

Okay Blit would you like us to say " Well done, this is the best wedding video I have ever seen!!" We are being completely honest here. I do like being constructive and say things that I like about the video, but like I said before, there is nothing I like about the video. Ofcourse, I'm not trying to crush him, but telling what area he need to improve on for his next video. Frankly, if I ever post my work here, I don't care if people crap on it, what I care about is what can I do to make it better next time.

Hi
I think "well done this is the best wedding video ever " may be you putting extreme words in my mouth to make your point.
I think encouragement and positive attitude has its place here as it does on a set. I like to think of this as a mentoring site. I think of a mentor as someone with solid knowledge that would like to give something back to their craft. A crushing teacher may be correct but also may not be producing as good a result as a teacher who is correct, finds positives and encourages students.

David W. Jones -> Your right that's what I am missing ("4:3 standard definition DV format")! If I transcode everyone to 4:3, tall and skinny, they will love my work and me! Standard def hides all blemishes! It's just old enough to be new!

Wassup and not at all was I offended...I laugh at some stuff said because I dont take myself that serious that I cant get bashed for my work...I never went to film school and tried something out and used a opportunity a friend gave me to grow...If I may though ask about the white balance that threw you off?? I would like to know more of ur take and knowledge you would of done white balance wise to insure a better product...Also my skills with the visual effects are growing but I know im not there yet, I just wanted to try some things out with the 3D camera and manipulate pictures and time them with the move of the camera...and the first effect with the background and cut out pictures I always wanted to try so I tried it...I appreciate all the feedback, I use to rap and trust me there not to kind in that arena if they aint feeling u so my skinned thickened a bit...But thanks for watching my video and I wanna keep improving

@Crossroads Films

Honestly I would suggest going to school if you want to learn and grow. Even if you do this outside as work, you will learn a lot and get real world experience at the same time. Not every famous director went to school, but I can honestly tell you, if you do go to school and continue to apply yourself you can learn a lot and find a way to make this a career.

peace

no doubt, Im actually working on a movie right now and it taught me alot just being on set every day...Why there's different lenses, histogram, 180 rule, what the shots mean and what your portraying to the audience, lighting, getting locations, shooting on the fly etc...Im trying to grow as much as possible and if you know any good blogs or channels that have a great deal more of info definitely post it...Im all over Film riot and indy mogul...wouldnt mind more knowledge

That's the right attitude, you'll be good in no time. There's a lot of information out there to learn. Youtube have countless of good channels( I'm subscribe to about 400 channels and watch YT religiously). My favorite are Film Riot, Indy Mogul, Neuman films, Dave Dugdale, Bammo, B and H sometimes have good hour long videos... I can list a lot more.

Here are some blogs that I follow: http://www.theblackandblue.com/ http://www.eoshd.com/ http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/ http://dslrvideoshooter.com/ http://philipbloom.net/ http://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/ http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/ http://cheesycam.com/ http://oliviatech.com/ http://www.dslrnewsshooter.com/ http://www.freshdv.com/ http://www.nextwavedv.com/ http://filmmakeriq.com/

Man DVXuser is turning into a rough place for sure. Bilt. I think it was a great effort. The only way to grow and get better is to keep trying new things. Maybe next time...focus a little less on the editing effects and more on some nice smooth camera movement. Wedding videos don't need to be over the top and flashy. They can be simple and clean....just well thought out. Until you can invest in a slider or glidecam try doing some really nice slow pans on a tripod. I've been shooting for 10 years and I still can't handhold a DSLR unless the lens has OIS. So I play to my strengths and utilize everything I can.

I did study media law when I was in college (not that this makes me lawyer). I wouldn't worry too much about the copyright infringement if this is something you did to help out a buddy. You're not taking any money from the owner directly or indirectly. But, if you were to start doing more paying work...there are PLENTY of amazing royalty free music sites where you can buy awesome quality stuff for only like $20. And that's nothing....just build it into the cost. I buy royalty free stuff for all my projects.

So, don't let this good vs. bad argument about copyright BS hinder your creativity. Until you're making the big bucks or your work is highly visible....just have fun. Learn.

Just my 2 cents....
