Vincent Laforet interview

Thanks, spam me anytime with stuff like this. When you say "Reverie" was projected on a huge screen and it blew you away, please tell me more. How big was the screen? Was it indiscernable to 35mm film being projected. Just trying to understand what you meant when you said "blown away".

Well, you could subscribe to my RSS feed and get it in your email :)

Reverie was shown at the Collision Conference last week at the LA Film School - I believe they were saying it is a "2K projector" - so, I'm not a film techie so I can't really tell you much technically - but I can tell you that everyone I talked to there at the conference who did know some stuff was also very impressed at how the 5d footage stood up to the big screen.

I would say that the screen there was at least the size of a normal movie theater at a multiplex - and I mean the main theater, not one of the little side ones.

We also saw RED at 2k and GH1 at 2k, and for your average movie goer, they won't know the difference.

In fact, Rodney Chambers showed a still on the big screen of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II side by side with a still from 35mm and he was most impressed by the 5D2 footage. (Check the post on my blog about the day 2 of the conference - there's much more info there)

Very interesting. I doubt I'll ever do a film out or even just project it, but it's nice to know it holds up.

What did Shane Hurlbut of T4 fame have to say about the IQ of 5DII exactly? ..and how many has he destroyed? :-) I would like to know exactly where the in "Terminator Salvation" the 5DII was used.
Tell us some of Shane's stories. I''ll light the camp fire. :-)

You said Rodney Chambers, did you mean Rodney Charter DP of 24.

Good golly, sorry Rodney! That's the second time I've said Chambers instead of Charters... yes, you're right - charters!

Um Shane said he has 15 5D2s and recently damaged one or two. He didn't use the 5D2 in the Terminator Salvation, but used it on the 'webisodes' that they put on the web afterwards. He especially used the helmet-cam for that setup. (see my blog for more info http://blog.planet5d.com on all of that).

there's a new one too.. funny.. me don't know his credits.. what movies has he shot or written??

He just happens to be a world renown image maker. Top of the line. The stuff that many dream of around here. He gets to test the cameras before anybody else. He is a pretty good photographer and to me that is a pre-requisite to be a good DoP, that is Director of PHOTOGRAPHY, in case some need reminding. As a professional photographer and videographer I respect his work, because that is what a PROFESSIONAL would do. I am sure that he is already making top dollar for his motion picture experiments. That's all.

a good piece of BS is what this hype is.

Welcome to show business! If you didn't know it that is what is made of, BS hype. It is also called Marketing. And Reverie was a brilliant piece of marketing, at all levels. If people don't understand the business they don't deserve to be part of it.

In the real world. In the planet I spend most of the time in. Planet earth. Professional film making IS a business. Actually a big business. And people like Laforet by example dominate it. And people have to be very talented to play in the big leagues because the competition and the talent up there is fierce. And marketing in the film making business is done at every single level of the business. Actually IT DOMINATES every single level of the business, from the camera manufacturers to the final movie. After 35 years in the photo and motion pictures business as well as the journalism, promotion and marketing circles I should know a thing or two about it. But it doesn't take all the years to understand that that is the real world of film making circa 2009.
