16GB P2 Cards Out-of-Stock Everywhere?

I also think it is criminal.. or atleast should be.. for an authorized panny dealer to sell on Ebay to get more cash for their cards.

supply and demand. its how the market works.

that said, its effin ridiculous what Panasonic is doing. they are going to lose customers.

Sounds like some people need to have a little more patience. I'm sure Panny is making the cards as fast as they can. The demand is high and the supply is what it is. Would you prefer Panny to raise the price to lower the demand?

They are still insanely expensive and are still not large enough. Sony is about to kick Panasonic's ass with the express card. They are bigger, faster, and cheaper than P2.

Panasonic needs to rev it up or they are going to get toasted. Sony just needs to come out with the quality cameras that uses express cards, then bam, its RIP P2 if Panasonic dosn't make some changes.

Some vendor was trying to sell me a 32 GB card-HA!. By some miracle, my order for the HVX 200 (Which was made on 6/30), just arrived. One problem. The camera was the ONLY thing to show.

No P2 card or other goodies.

Damn that Japanese earthquake!! Apparently it hit one of the panasonic sites, which is their reason for the delays.

It's also opportunistic price gouging... Call it whatever you want...

Proof positive though that the cam is a big friggin hit... more than anticipated probably

Different codecs entirely.

If you want to shoot long GOP, then get a kick butt Sony.

But comparing the codecs doesn't make much sense especially in post.

I also think that Sony has a huge hurdle to overcome. Like it's the Daytona 500 and Panny is leading by 40 laps with 100 to go or something. Talking with the Rep here locally they can't... and haven't ever had the cams stay on the shelf at all.. and that when they come in they go right out and that's been the same way for a year and a half..

Sony dropped the ball on so many ways and now with that HV20 cam.. not even selling their single chippers...

Bigger? They're saying they'll have a 16GB card in November. Panasonic says they'll have a 32GB card in November.

Faster? Barely. 640mbps vs. 800mbps.

Cheaper? Says who? From what I understand Sony's quoting a price of $400 for a 16GB, but it's not going to be available until November. Let's see what the Panasonic 16GB card goes for in November, which is still quite a ways away...

Well, that's one opinion. Another way to look at it is: Sony's cunning plan was to wait until Panasonic locked up the entire market before even acknowledging that memory recording is the right way to go. One could say they're too little, too late. Or they'll be a hit, I don't know, but with massive networks committing to P2 entirely, and with the BBC already committing to DVCPRO-HD, how much of a market is there left for an alternative?

I'm glad there's another system coming to market, it will force both companies to compete and that helps the customer. But to go predicting that P2 is "toast" or "RIP" is a bit melodramatic, I think. 300 broadcast organizations worldwide are committed to the P2 system. It's not going anywhere.

I'm sure Panasonic is just quaking in their collective boots.:violin:

How is Panasonic gonna pull of 32gb cards by November, if no one can get their hands on 16gb cards now.

I would much rather they focus their efforts on making sure people can actually get p2 cards then working on making larger ones.

Anyway they're giving me something for free so all i can do is call them "mean" for being so damn slow.

Open market is definetly great. Hopefully Sony will force Panasonic to lower their prices dramatically. Panasonic is a great company, but right now its beyond ridiculous.

Memory recording is a tad ahead of its time. Great technology, but not much thought was put into the process of money/workflow/etc. Its getting figured out, just slower than many would like :)

I felt the same way, but the fine folks here in these forums straightened me out :lipsrseal

I'm supposed to be on some sort of list to get a card from Full Compass. First they said end of July, now it's end of August. Feels like I'm getting the old contractors "put off". Bigger job comes up...you get put off.

Ive got a 16GB card... and I am sure a lot of other customers have them, as well as a lot big companies have 16gb cards. And until November I am sure Panasonic can produce and sell a lot more of them.

All right! I finally got my rebate P2 via UPS today.

BTW...it was not "free". Panasonic, nor any other business gives stuff away for free.

It was a promotional incentive designed to get folks to buy into the P2 technology by neutralizing the expensive media objection. Apparently, the roll out was very successful and the industry (especially the folks that need the workflow advantage) are buying in.

It worked for me, albeit was a really long wait.

In the mean time I had to buy an 8GB card and I was fortunate to purchase another 16GB.

The 8GB card is now for sale if anyone is interested.

It took me about an hour to find one online and i just got it last week. They are around you just need to dig a bit.

yeah, true with anything though. They are slowly coming though. I know one reseller who is expecting between 10 and 100 16gb cards to arrive this week. After I buy one, I'll find out if I can post his info for you guys to bombard him :)

An Incentive cannot distinguish between something being free. I paid the base price for the camera and received (will receive?) a card with it. I didn't pay the price and receive a discount on the card(which is an incentive).

If the incentive helped me purchase the camera than it still doesn't change the fact that I didn't pay for the card.

I agree with the comments Barry made in the comparison between the p2 and EC.

But that's where we depart.

The lack of availability of cards is a major, major shortcoming of Panasonic and this been an issue since day 1

This site is replete with concern and frustration about this issue since the day the cams came out.

We couldn't even get a card back at the beginning of last year.

And it's one thing to say 32 Gb card will be available in November. It's another to say that you can readily purchase it, or 16 GB or 8 GB for that matter.

You paid for the card...it was included in the price.

Panasonic considers the card to be included in their cost and your price, regardless of if they call it an incentive or free or whatever. It is part of the sale. Businesses do not give stuff away for free. It is just part of their cost. Their marketing folks like to spin folks into thinking they are getting something for free. That's what sales folks do.

I don't know what Jan and her Panasonic marketing folks total plan was; however, their promotion around the P2 card appears to be directly related to the market buzz around the relative price of media...P2 at $1,400 and tape at $4.00.

Jan was right on the money. The promotion handled that objection very well. Apparently she was too successful relative to her supplier's delivery capability. She also succeeded in keeping the total usable package (w/P2 card) at just around $5,000-$5,500 price point.

She absolutely succeeded at redefining the market. However, the successful roll-out now is allowing her real pricing power...so no need to discount/promo the P2 cards.

The competitor's reaction will likely drive her next moves...when they catch up...and assuming she gets her supply chain in shape.
