Ultra Contrast Filters

Hi there,

The Tiffen Ultra Contrast filters would seem to be quite useful for improving
the dynamic range of a 1/3" chip camera like the HVX200, bringing
up real detail in the shadows. Nice trick!

I just wonder what might be a good grade to get. They go from
1/8" to 5, with a price tag of about $200 for a 4x4" filter.
Yikes! I would like to buy ONE "general purpose" contrast smoosher,
something to help out with low light noise
(although I realize ideally I should just buy a full set).

Any experience out there?
Thanks for your time!

Les

Anything more than a UC 1/2 is overkill, and IMHO provides a washout that nulifies the advantage. The 1/4 or 1/2 are the range that I like.

I haven't used the Ultra Cons, but my experience with contrast filters in general is that they give the image a milky appearance that is generally not very pleasant.

Sorry, nothing I have access too at the moment. I may in the near future and I would be happy to post some examples for you.

I'm crazy about the look of softening and lowering contrast glass filters in front of the Hvx. I don't know about the ultracons, only tried the digicons, and lo cons (Schneider). My impression is that if you allready like the diffused and filmic look of the hvx and it's different gamma's, then you'll love how these filters take that same concept further.
