1DC: Upgrade Advice - 1DC vs. C300

Well, Canon doesn't exactly have a blog where it communicates with its users. It's hard to get firm statements on topics like these that are unsupported. Most of the information is from people talking to Canon representatives during exhibitions. Much is speculation.

But one example is that I made a post here after I had my first 1Dc firmware upgrade, where I described the cumbersome and somewhat secretive process.

I was then contacted by Canon Switzerland (who in turn had been contacted by Canon Japan), asking me to remove the post since Canon didn't want that type of information disclosed. I wasn't forced to do it (they couldn't really), but I did it in good faith.

This is fact, and proof, at least to me, that they take it seriously. And also, but the way, that they do read this forum!

Canon has gone to some length and even explicitly stated that 1DcML is a no go.

Canon is in no position to make such claims/threats. If a 1DX/1DC combo became available to a motivated programmer, we would have seen it happen, and there isn't a damn thing Canon could do about it(thus the secrecy and lock down of 1DC firmware files). I'm guessing the only reason we haven't seen a hack is the ratio of cost vs popularity of the hardware makes it irrelevant. In other words, no one is using them(by no one meaning a worthwhile % of any industry). 5D's were, and still are everywhere! DSLR shooters in general that wanted a solid upgrade in image quality never considered a 1DX/C and upgraded to c100's/fs700's/fs7's/a7's/BMCC's that ultimately lead to the annihilation of 1DC sales and support channels soon after (thus no news, firmware, feature updates).

These silly Canon legal myths are a joke. Somehow the internet turned "one harmless statement from a sleep deprived Canon executive" into "ML group won't touch 1DX for fear of legal repercussions". I think the 5D raw hack cost them more in c100 sales then any 1DX-C port ever would. If such was the case, massive corporations like Apple, Google and Samsung would have put that hammer down long ago :)

You don't want 4k raw. It just isn't practical.

YOU may not want raw 4k, and for YOU it might not be practical. For my(and many others) studio stuff, a raw 4k signal would be worth the increased cost of hard disk space. With the average cost per GB hovering around .43 cents, storage is not the bottleneck it once was. Shooting sports at high resolution/shutter speeds makes pulling stills easy work and would be a dream to have access to a RAW stream. Same benefits would be a welcomed addition too moving portraits, sun rises/sets and visual effects.

Hopefully they will listen to us: C300 V2....internal 4K (not UHD)! Please! $12K or below...no more 8 bit, extended DR, ...good computer friendly codecs...PLEASE!

That's just a runor that went live on click-bait pages and never officially stated by anyone at Canon. But the ML just avoided the possibility even though it's probably a rumor. Anyway stating that they forbid hacking the 1Dx and 1Dc would mean a clear consent on hacking all the lower end cameras, which is something they would never do. The 1Dc might be hard to hack for the lack of public firmware updates but the 1Dx ahould be just like any 5D, and with it's much greater buffer and card write speed it can theoritically go up to 2.5k/3K raw to fast cards like the ones used for 4K on the 1DC. And they will probably find the traces for the s35 crop and even 4K. I guess they don't want to risk losing the entire project even if it's jus a rumor. So the only way is private hacking. Would anyone be interested in hacking a 1Dx or a 1Dc if he has experience for a great pay? It shouldn't be hard, just like porting it to a new 5D or so, it's just politics forbidding it. We could split the cost between a few owners if it's technically possible! I am sure there at least a few 1Dx/1Dc owners willing to pay a lot to get ML. It will not be made public, just for us.

fair enough, i thought the main guy behind ml (a1ex or something) confirmed it, but I could be wrong

Hopefully they will listen to us:
They just might be listening to us. It seems they always give us a little less than our 'bare minimum' spec request. They even mess up things they got right on the first one.

Personally, I just don't see the reason to buy into this year's cameras. Everything has gotten better, but they are all lacking in one important area or another. The 5dmk2 set a bench mark that, other than moire' really hasn't been beat, since everything is 8bit anyway. Also, display tech and web just hasn't caught up yet. Why invest in all these middle step crippled improvements? I am glad that 4K is now in the masses, but rolling shutter. I am glad we have better DR, but 8bit?!? HD really could have a 10 or 12bit option.

A lot of great improvements, but really not anything is being done for image quality and usability. Sure, 8bit is 'good enough', but so is the 5dmk2 with olpf. I am done complaining about these companies, I am happy with the old cheap stuff that is as practical to use as their new stuff, that if used right, gets similar results.

Thank you camera companies for getting it 90% right the first time (on accident), and allowing me to not need an upgrade. =)

Excellent point....... truth is these cameras are way better than most people are capable of!

The bottle neck of 4K raw , 4K10 etc etc is not the available size of the storage but is the physical size of the storage ( they cannot put a 2.5 in" SSD in a DSLR
Also the more important factor is the write speed of these media. Everyone know many 4K camera( internal recording type) become available this year, that is simply because 95mb/s SD card become available and they have something to record on. The 1DC only become available when the 120mb/s plus CF card become available, at this speed only 8bit MJpeg data can be written, any more data from 10 bit or 4:4:4 choma or raw, no single CF card will be able to write fast enough. Unless they update the slot to Cfast. ( I believe you all know there was a JVC 4K camera couple years ago that need 4xSDcard to write the data at the same time and need to be put the files from the sdcard after processing on a PC)

I believe ML is making Canon sold much more 5D3 worldwide and to a point that a reduction in C100 sale figure due to ML+5D2 is still much more profitable for Canon.

One answer..... Atomos Blade.

Most of the times companies engage different teams for development of different products. So some of the good features doesn't automatically get included in the new models. For example, long time ago around 2005-2006 I was using a Nokia N9300 communicator. It had a feature of typing sms and then deciding the time that sms (short messaging service) will get delivered. So I used to type instructions to my team at late in the night and time the delivery of those sms at 7 am next day morning when they would be entering the office. I would then arrive later in office after finishing other meetings in city and check on the progress. That feature got removed from the subsequent phone models. Even though at that time I was the head of Govt. relations for the nokia chennai factory, I couldn't convince the teams in other countries to incorporate the feature. So when Canon listens to our suggestions, I am really pleased (as a consumer).
