Updated AF100 Camera

If there's a huge outpouring of customer interest, then they will respond. Get five thousand people to commit to buy it, and I bet they'll build it... If the dealers tell them that such a product would sell in large quantities, they'd build it.

Dealers would not have a clue what camera people working in the real world of "shooting movies" want in a camera.

In my experience, dealers are basically sales people and not users ...so they are the last people I would want advising Panasonic on what to build for the market.

Maybe so, but the dealers are the one with the responsibility for actually selling the product. In the strictest sense, we end users aren't actually Panasonic's customer, the dealer is. The dealer is the one who buys the product from panasonic. Sure, it's a pedantic distinction, but if a manufacturer's dealers came to the manufacturer and said "build this and you'll sell 10,000 units" then I would certainly expect the manufacturer to listen carefully.

I'd definitely buy a 4/3 AF100/HPX250 hybrid so long as the price wasn't sky high. Even if I end up buying a Scarlet it would make the perfect B cam to that, but for now it would make the perfect A cam with my AF100 becoming the B. And I can finally relegate the HVX200s and 7D to eBay :)

I think the price point would be critical- 10 bit 4:2:2 AVC intra with a large sensor is a great selling point, but it needs to stay in the AF100 league at the sorts of prices Barry is talking about to be viable for me.

Cheers, Hywel.

I love that the AF does 60 fps in 1080 and none of the competing products even the f3 can do that.. So I wouldn't want to lose that capability by switching over to avc I .If the present AF had 10 bit architecture and a 50 mb codec that could be recorded internally, even if the internal recording wasn't 10 bit it would open many more doors for using the AF - for instance tv broadcast networks- that are not presently open.High quality in camera recording has been a strength of Panasonic for years now and I am mystified why it isn't being implemented in some way with the AF. Better quality in camera recordings obviate the need for add on recorders, simplifying the camera configuration and making the camera less complicated and more useful as a camera.

Also, do Cooke or Zeiss lenses talk to the camera? (Not a rhetorical question, as I don't know the answer to that... though I doubt they do).

The very latest cooke S4's are available in a version that talks to the camera.
obviously tho, traditional cooke and zeiss lenses don't!

Everybody is going to get sick of me saying this.
All we need is more affordable cine lenses right now. Preferably not Micro Four Thirds mount. Its risky to invest in a camera that only Panasonic makes. I want glass that I can take to the next camera I own or rent and maybe it will be another MFT camera but who knows. PL mounts are not going away any time soon and thats what I'm looking to buy. For now Zeiss is the only game in town for lower priced cine lenses, and they cost $3900 a piece for the CP.2 prime. Then it goes way up and from there, and cine zooms are crazy expensive.

Sorry this went off topic.
Isn't there a PL adaptor out there 4 micro 4/3?

Nikon mounts are certainly out there if you can make do with cheaper still lenses and nikon mounts/lenses aren't going anywhere soon either!

I'd see what is out there in the way of adaptors, esp if buying pl, because you can use the cheaper lenses alongside as you build up yr stock.

Without question Panasonic will make a successor to the MFT AF-100. Probably a higher quality codec like AVCintra and P2 media, however adding those features alone will add a couple grand to the camera and P2 media isn't cheap. Maybe that would be a deal breaker for many. The AF-100 at $5K is such a good deal. It surprises me that the other guys haven't challenged it that much. If you own a AF-100 would you buy a FS100 to replace it? Even Canon. Would you replace with a new 5D DSLR? Thats going backwards even if it was 4K.
I really wish Birger would get that Canon mount finished. That would breath new life to an already good camera.

Ok then, How about an AF 300?
I'm concerned about Panasonic's commitment to larg-ish sensor cameras, which seems to be limited to the AF 100 at this point. Without a roadmap and commitment to some other large sensor cameras I 'm afraid Panasonic will become the new JVC as far a as cameras are concerned. While there will be a need for 2/3rds cameras for broadcast for the foreseeable future, clearly there is a strong trend towards the large sensor single chip cameras. Panasonic seems to have some very nifty proprietary IP that would enable a great single chip camera. It would be sort of sad to see the lineage that started with the DVX 100 , the Varicam, HVX 200 etc, etc kind of dribble off into....??
lets wait till NAB. they're a company who dont show their cards until the right time.

my problem with most of these companies is that their decisions are based on sales. not that i dont understand this, i do but its foolish to think that the only reason a product feature will be made depends on sales estimate/prediction :\

I'll be holding off on new cameras for a while. My AF100 is less than a year old, and most of my budget has been diverted to PL mount glass.

I responded to that PR person and here's what I wrote:
To answer your questions:
I use the AF100 to make short films and hope to use it to make features. I've used it a few times on weddings.
I bought the DVX100, then the HPX170, then the AF100. Now waiting for the AF??? with P2 AVC-intra.

What I dislike about the AF100? - no P2, no avc intra, no 10 bit, 4:2:2.
I'd rather not have to record to externals to get the best quality.
I'd rather have my scene file dials on the outside like the HPX170
so I can change scene files on the fly without having to dive into the menu.

I'd like to see the AF??? version of the HPX250.
I'd like the AF??? to match color wise with the HPX250 so I can use both as A and B.
AF??? for shallow shots, HPX250 for wides and zooms. Perfect film-making combo, plus ENG possibilities.
then I'll buy both the HPX250 and the AF??? and save myself the money on buying crazy zooms for the AF???

same sentiments (except i wont buy the 250 :P)

dcloud, no 250 - someone is buying for you? I'd like to have one for ENG and versatility and behind the scenes etc. I sold my HPX170, that's why.
