Updated AF100 Camera

10 bit
50 mbs avc ultra in camera recording
Max frame rate up around 100 or 120.
At that point i'd be in for another camera or two.

A huge strong point that Panasonic seems to ignore is that they seem to have the best in camera recording codecs around. If they can crank out the HPX 250 with 10 bit abc intra at the price point they have, giving the AF a codec upgrade seems eminently doable and really helps the whole form of the camera. No Pix 240, nano flash and required plumbing needed. The way I see it, this is a big plus as it lowers total investment cost in the package and does away with something that contributes to the franken rigging that takes place around these small cameras.

Hi Jan,

Thank you for the info. I wish I knew which shots in that edit were taken on the AF100. The image quality varies all the way through. Some is holding up good, others, not so much.

I have to say, after researching the internet for the past week, the Sony is giving what seems like a nicer image. However, after the EX1, I am dubious about taking another Sony into sub zero and wet conditions. The build quality is just, well, crappy. So do I go for a Sony which IMO give a nicer image at first glace, but risk being stuck without any camera if it breaks (therefore no images), or go for the reliable, well built Panasonic with pro features.

Conundrum :(

oh yeah. this fell off my list... How about moving the record button back to an appropriate place for hand held shooting. I know that with the removable handgrip things get sticky in the button placement department but the HVX, HPX cameras had this more right than the AF.

Huh, I haven't been to the threads in a few months, been too busy shooting the AF, and am very surprised to see people still talking about the way the camera handles highlights. I have never been anything than happy with my highlights, and I'm an outdoor run and gun documentary type shooter for my bread and butter. Use the waveform monitor, shoot flat, learn how to expose, then transcode your footage in 5DtoRGB and tell me your highlights aren't gorgeous? Of course you could go the Sony route, but then you're going to have no ND filters for shooting in those bright exteriors (FaderND's are no substitute), and my heart would stop if I ever dropped that camera; it looks and feels like it would shatter into a million pieces. My AF100 just survived its first on-set mishap, the camera barely has a scrape despite falling six feet on concrete fully rigged, only a cheap $20 adapter damaged, the camera didn't even skip a frame on impact!

Conundrum :(

You can put a question to the guy that shot it. He is pretty responsive. The softer shots I would imagine are the 5D.

And frankly the only thing that limits the quality of the AF100 output is the operator. I have seen too many pieces that look just fabulous.

Best,

Jan

Ok then, How about an AF 300?
I'm concerned about Panasonic's commitment to larg-ish sensor cameras, which seems to be limited to the AF 100 at this point. Without a roadmap and commitment to some other large sensor cameras I 'm afraid Panasonic will become the new JVC as far a as cameras are concerned. While there will be a need for 2/3rds cameras for broadcast for the foreseeable future, clearly there is a strong trend towards the large sensor single chip cameras. Panasonic seems to have some very nifty proprietary IP that would enable a great single chip camera. It would be sort of sad to see the lineage that started with the DVX 100 , the Varicam, HVX 200 etc, etc kind of dribble off into....??

Okay, well that's the answer then folks. Stop wasting time hoping and speculating. An AF100 reboot isn't coming in April.

The AF100 is still less than a year old. The very first ones weren't even shipped until the absolute end of December of last year. There's no reason to expect any sort of update or "reboot" any time soon. Especially with the Nov. 3rd announcements out of the way, the AF100 is the only camera in its class that does what it does and likely will be for quite a while.

If they had an AF100 with a P2/AVC-I backend for around $8k (with 32gb P2 card) I think that would be the bees knees.

So do I, but I'd rather have it at $6k.

Reasoning: AC160 and AF100 are the same basic camera, big sensor vs. small, and they're about the same price.

So I'd love love love to see an AF250 which would be the same basic camera as the HPX250, but big sensor vs. small, at the same price ($5995). Oh, you said with a 32GB P2 card, so ... yeah, add $400. $6395 for a P2-based AVC-Intra large-sensor camera with magnified focus assist and the HPX250's magical highlight handling? Sold...

Well obviously my price is the MSRP and not the street price ;)

I'd be totally down for this large sensor HPX250. 10 bit AVC-I and near the price of an FS100 - this camera would be in that right price range where they aren't competing against DSLR's but with features and a codec that rival/exceed the F3 and C300. Please do it Panny!

Okay, edit, I just double-checked the MSRP's: AC160 is $4795, but AF100 is $4995.

HPX250 is $5995, so my proposed AF250 would be probably $6195. I'm okay with that.
