Update red.com "Recommended"

hmm...this is not good news...at least for me...i do not nor will i reinvest in a mac/apple...hopefully they will update with proper pc/windows specs

I think any sort of "list" is very premature. My comfort level in recommending computer hardware is barely a month into the future, let alone the solid fiscal quarter or so before RED hits the pavement. Other than to say "high end specs needed on either platform", why bother at this point?

Also, from a PC guys perspective, it's a bit Mac-centric right from the git-go, and a bit telling on where development will happen first.

Why should they develop for the PC? Apple has a current commercial showing that PC users are vindictive, petty, and lack creativity. Isn't it all true? I certainly lack creativity, this post is petty and probably vindictive, and I guess I now know why.

If you look at the background of the major RED players, I'm not aware of any who aren't Mac folks first. I suspect that RED development plan will be similar to BlackMagic Designs, where everything initially was Apple/FCP and then slowly support for PC apps trickled out.

I'm really, really hoping that REDCINE or whatever it winds up being called and the needed codecs hit the ground running on BOTH platforms, at the same time with the same functionality.

Seems to me that a RECOMMENDED list is ONE list of hardware they have tested and confirmed has a smooth compatibility with their product. There will be other lists people come up with and tons of workarounds and other configurations, including computers with cheaper specs. You might encounter different issues with non-recommended hardware. And some non-recommended hardware might not work at all. So Red probably wants to be sure there is a tested system for people to fall back on. But end-users themselves will be coming up with all kinds of configurations fo the set-up and posting their experiences. Red can't test every system. Like Avid and their recommended computers--if you went by the "letter of the law" my Avid computer would have to cost me $10,000. But I'm running Avid off a $900 computer with "non-recommended" video card, etc. And yes, I get issues sometimes. But I get the job done (thanks in no small part to Tylenol). Undoubtedly, my $900 paperweight won't handle Red however. There will be tons of postings in 2007 on how to use Avid and/or PC's with Red, even if the postings come from end-users rather than Red itself. Glory be the Internet.

I'm sure they will post the recommended Windows setup soon. They've already stated their intention of having REDCINE run on both platforms.

One thing to keep in mind... No matter if you use Mac or PC, you will very likely need to upgrade your current system. You're just not gonna be able to cut 4K footage on a bondi blue iMac G3 using iMovie. ;)

You guys gotta remember that they have to cover their ass when they recommend anything. So ofcourse their going to recommend the best within reason. If they stated absoloute minimum requirements, you will get people complaining when stuff doesnt go so smoothely.

Mac or PC, doesnt matter. I for one can put together a PC that will blow any mac away interms of raw performance so this does not worry me. What worries me is if Red software will be mac exclusive at first. But im sure they are way more savvy than to do that.

And acehole111--I'll be very interested to hear about the PC you put together for the job. That's the route I'm going.

I agree...

BTW...i hope this doesn't get into a pc/mac debate...it's was not my intention with my statement.

We're totally cross platoform at RED. Even Jim has used a PC recently (and he's a bigger mac fan than I am) and I have Boot camp on my mac, as do most of the rest of the mac users in the office.

What the recommended page is saying is - here is the gear we use at RED, the gear we like, and the gear that works. Now, that does not mean that any other gear is not to be liked or does not work.

When it comes to REDCINE, for instance, we'll be listing detailed mac and pc specs of what you need to run it, run it well, and run it best.

RED Software will not be mac first - it will be designed and written cross platform. Given that, there may be instances when a pc update or version comes before the mac version, or the mac version comes out before the pc, but that will just be due to the developmental differences between platforms and not indicitive of company policy which certainly doesn't regard any platform, mac or pc, as a second class citizen.

But we (nearly) all use macs by choice as we like them, and we can't help that!

Thanks for clarifying, Graeme.

And folks should remember, we'll be able to edit an offline of the footage on any computer that can cut MiniDV right now. Then EDL, and bingo!

So, a Quad G5 PowerPC may be able to run it, just not as smoothly as say the latest Mac Pro that's available when the Red ships?

I can live with things taking a little longer or a little more sluggish, but I have to admit, like many others I will be slightly bummed if I have to upgrade the computer I just got a couple of months ago. But I also understand the ripple effect here. If you want to move up to a higher format, a lot of the other gear needs to be upgraded to meet the demands.

Steve

We'll try our best to make sure things run as best as possible on your Quad, but you may need to upgrade. I can't tell you for certain though. It all depends on what you'll do with RED and what workflow you'll use. More info will be released as we get closer to the final software specs.

No, I meant this post, MY post, complaining about the Apple-centric list is petty and vindictive and that I lack creativity... sorry if I wasn't clear.. :)

I've just come off a bad week working with a group of superior acting FCP guys that don't know their... from a ... in the ground, having to google up information for them about their own NLE, so that situation is feeding a bit of Apple/PC sensitivity on my part as I opened my browser this fine Saturday morning...

I havent decided exactly yet, but you can count that Vista's new architecture + multiple Quadcore cpu's, coupled with a criminal amount of ram will make 4k purr like a kitten. And Nvidia Quadros will be a must ofcourse.

Don't forget that there is a big difference whether you shoot 720p, 1080p, 2K or 4K. It will also matter greatly if you want to edit in 2K or 4K (besides the issue which software allows you to work with 4K frames)

I believe your point is the same of many other PC users and future RED customers as well. And we hope for a PC based recommendation too.
