On the issue of RAM, what exactly will it be used for that puts it up there on the list of things to have? I know it comes in handy when doing a render preview with the flipbook in shake and having more apps open, but besides that how does it aid in editing high resolution footage?

I know what ram is used for but I want to know why its smart to buy more ram than I already have. Like say if someone had a new mac pro with 16GB of ram compared to 8GB, would there be a noticeable difference in speed?

You got it right.. flipbook is one way, along with RAM preview in after effects, and Frame Cycler that we have been previewing 4k sequences of the RED footage to this point.

Ram is a great way to overcome the restrictions of hard drive bandwidth limitations that 4k image sequences require.

As for the second part of your question.. 16gb isnt going to make your system faster. after 2gb speed differences become less evident. In fact.. your system may go slower in some instances. I have a Fiber card and the Mac Pro wont even work if you put over 2gb into it.
