Update red.com "Recommended"

Also keep in mind that the Mac hardware will run Windows (which as Graeme indicated is what is being done at RED as well)

No, I meant this post, MY post, complaining about the Apple-centric list is petty and vindictive and that I lack creativity... sorry if I wasn't clear.. :)

I've just come off a bad week working with a group of superior acting FCP guys that don't know their... from a ... in the ground, having to google up information for them about their own NLE, so that situation is feeding a bit of Apple/PC sensitivity on my part as I opened my browser this fine Saturday morning...

Thanks, Jim....totally see the point...and i've been in that boat before (FCP guys)...my view of pc platform debates have been elevated to the same level as politics & religion...not worth discussing....but my hats off to Steve Jobs on a excellent marketing campaign even though the message is totally incorrect..

It seems to me that if you're sufficiently patient, and you're using an offline workflow, you should be able to work with RED footage on just about anything. Of course, values of 'sufficiently patient' may need to be extremely large on older hardware.

for mini setup on location

Will it be possible to record a 720 or 1080 proxy (with a rough lut adjustment) simultaneously while shooting redcode 4K to internal flash so that no processing is necessary for previewing on a laptop in the field.

Then you can bring your 4K home to a powerful desktop or to an online suite and render a more precise lut there.

I believe your point is the same of many other PC users and future RED customers as well. And we hope for a PC based recommendation too.

Thanks, Emanuel...exactly and well said!

I've never used an EDL workflow. How does that work exactly?

Also, was anybody able to find prices on some of the higher end stuff on the recommendation list? (ie. 4K recorder and Scratch)

hello im a pc, and im a mac.

MAC: Hi, I'm a Mac.
PC: And I'm a PC. Hey, what are holding in your hand?
MAC: Ah, it's an invitation... to a party for RED.
PC: That's funny, I thought I was supposed to get one of those.
MAC: Have you checked your mail? I mean, I know you were on the list.
PC: Well, I don't check my mail too often, you know, because of...
MAC: ... the viruses, I completely understand. Listen, I'll look into it for you.
PC: Really, that would be great! 'Cause I've got my party hat and horn.
MAC: Hey, bottom line, I'll make sure to save you a little piece of cake.
PC: And some punch?
MAC: Don't push it.

EDL is primitive ... there AAF ( EDL on steroids) .. then there MXL ( or something like that ) ...
basically if you edit a low res clips ( from 4k clips) a EDL will tell you the tape/clip name , time code in/out on section of clip you used in time line .. you then use those names/numbers to capture/reassemble those clips using your 4k clips .... EDL usually do not get compositing section correct , transitions, and again they are restrictions on how many video/audio tracks you can have .. so there is some manually putting it back together ...

i prefer to make a exact lo res copy of HD clips ... edit the low res .. then when finished hide the low res ( rename folder they are in) and when the NLE says it cannot find the clips many NLE will give you a choice to search for the files or lead it to a specific clip - you then lead the NLE to the orginal HD clips ( if they have the same names it's very easy) = your exact EDIT ...

LOL

This all sounds familair...I want the HVX, but I also want to edit with Vegas.
Whah whah etc etc.
Don't worry, I'm sure everything will work our fine, except maybe for vegas users.

I havent decided exactly yet, but you can count that Vista's new architecture + multiple Quadcore cpu's, coupled with a criminal amount of ram will make 4k purr like a kitten. And Nvidia Quadros will be a must ofcourse.
I'm a die hard PC user (I actually run a company building and selling PCs), and Vista makes me shudder every time I hear people touting its supposed benefits....

Regardless, I don't see the need for Quadros per se unless you are actually manipulating 3D objects and your preferred program locks you to them. Any current generation GPU can EASILY push insane amounts of pixels as long as the program coders write the things to take advantage of them and not artificially limit them to GPUs bearing the Quadro/Firecat monikers. For those who don't know, the real differences between a Quadro and GeForce are purely BIOS based, then they tack a $1000+ markup on the card and sell it to gullible folks who don't understand that what they should be demanding instead is that companies support the GPU power available and NOT an indentifer to enable or disable GPU functionality.... /rant

Anyway, with a current Core 2 Duo and 2-4GB of RAM you'll no doubt have zero problems editing at least 2K if not 4K. As long as my point above about GPUs holds then 4K will probably be here sooner rather than later, on BOTH platforms (oh and hopefully Linux isn't forgotten - it will continue to expand its user base as people realise the cost and stability benefits over the big two).

And for those willing to push the limits of free power a bit (bearing in mind stability is IMPORTANT), overclocking is your friend.... :Drogar-Evil(DBG): Good luck getting a 50% or more overclock on a Mac....

Do not forget that Mac is Intel inside now!
So you can more or less translate from one to the other.

Personally I like "PC" because you can mount them yourself (for me it is fun, and for anybody it is really cheaper).
My favourite OS is Linux (FC 5), so I hope they are not forgetting it... as opensource has also a "revolution" mind...

Truthfully, although many indie RED users will be shooting 4K, for everything else--from edit to master--it will be 2K, and therefore not requiring quite the same computing power. The 4K resolution will be sitting on a drive on a shelf awaiting the very rare opportunity when some distributor buys the film. Otherwise, the film's life will be 2K and have a very good life in that resolution anyhow, won't it?

Hey again :)

Whilst I dont doubt that it shouldnt require that much to edit 4k, the same is not to be said for 4k Compositing. In saying that, you still dont *need* quadcores, but come a few months time, tunes will change when what used to be a want becomes a need. Story of my life when it comes to computers.

As far as the Geforces being artificially locked Quadro's, I have no Idea. But what I do know is that Ive seen Quadros do things lesser cards couldnt. So perhaps your paying a license fee when you upgrade cards I dont know. Theres always the topend ATI series where are equally as good.

Oh and the benifits regarding vista are more to do with memory management and threading architecture. Pretty much on par with 2003 server or xp x64, except with a bunch of improvements. I currently run XP x64.

MAC: Hi, I'm a Mac.
PC: And Im a Motha^&&^n PC.
MAC: Have you ever given a foot massage?
PC: Don't be tellin' me about foot massages. I'm the foot f*ckin' master.
MAC: Given a lot of 'em?
PC: **** yeah. I got my technique down and everything, I don't be ticklin' or nothin'.
MAC: Would you give a guy a foot massage?
PC: F*ck you.
MAC: You know, I'm getting kinda tired. I could use a foot massage myself.
PC: Man, you best back off, I'm gittin' a little pissed here.

I think so.

To anybody at RED... will REDCINE be a Universal Binary? That is, will it run on both Intel Macs and PowerPC Macs? PPC/G5 support was mentioned earlier in this thread with some reservation... I just want to make sure.

Because, ironically, I have a Quad G5 with about 8GB of RAM, the QuadroFX4500, the Kona, the RAID, etc... Even if it isn't as fast as the Mac Pro, I just want to make sure: Does REDCODE support PowerPC Macs?

So, a Quad G5 PowerPC may be able to run it, just not as smoothly as say the latest Mac Pro that's available when the Red ships?

I can live with things taking a little longer or a little more sluggish, but I have to admit, like many others I will be slightly bummed if I have to upgrade the computer I just got a couple of months ago. But I also understand the ripple effect here. If you want to move up to a higher format, a lot of the other gear needs to be upgraded to meet the demands.

We'll try our best to make sure things run as best as possible on your Quad, but you may need to upgrade. I can't tell you for certain though. It all depends on what you'll do with RED and what workflow you'll use. More info will be released as we get closer to the final software specs.

Graeme

Graeme addressed this earlier in this thread.

Exactly what I was referring to when I said that it was addressed with some reservation earlier in this thread. Hearing a lot of "try" and "maybe" and "not sure" just makes me a little nervous... with so many post houses sticking to PPC [as so many small plugins and applications haven't gone Universal], I'd really hate to see them [and my badass brand-new system] get left in the dust.

I'm sure it'll be Universal, but I've just asked that specific question 3 or 4 times now and I've never gotten a simple "yes" or "no".

Graeme can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but based on the response earlier, I would say it will be universal. I think this will come down to what workflow path you are going to use. Perhaps pushing 4K media will be a lot to ask of my G5 Quad, but 2K and below might be just fine. If you want a machine that will do everything the camera is capable of, you will have to scale your post hardware to accomodate it. Hence, those with slower G5s or older PCs might have to factor in a computer upgrade when looking at their workflow.
