Too Early?

I think that's the biggest reason I like the noir idea. I think a lot of people will interpret "noir" as purely stylistic, in which case they can have fun with it any way they like. I mean, some people may think about it purley in terms of dialogue, some people purely in terms of lighting, hell, other could just play with the gender roles. I don't think you need every element for it to qualify.

In a way I think "Action" is a lot more limiting than "Noir". After all, we've only got five or six minutes. I just think we'd end up seeing a whole lot of chases, shoot-outs, and explosions that lacked a proper emotional context to have impact. And if action movies have taught me anything, it's that when they get it wrong they're among the most boring movies in the world.

That said, I could totally get behind Romance.
Hmmm, I think you have a point there, ZB!

My concern with Noir is that it does bring with it very specific STYLES, whether those be dialogue, lighting, or shots. I don't think Noir is really a genre (I realize this has been covered a bit already).

Noir is going to get in the way of people's style, because noir dictates the style.
You can tell pretty much any story in a Noir style.
You can't tell any story in an 'Action' style or a 'Sci Fi' style - because those deal with plot and story elements - not just stylistic elements.

just my 2 cents.

Either way - I'll agree with one thing you said ZB -
I could also go for Romance for the next fest - I think we'd see some interesting entries.

MUSICAL! MUSICAL! ..... MUSICAL! MUSICAL! MUSICAL!

My problem with a short film musical is that we're really only talking about one full-length song, or a medley. I'm a big fan of more waay-off-broadway musicals (newsies, buffy, wizard of oz, etc), but I can see that competition turning into overacted music videos.

It'd be a challenge, certainly. Why not (brace yourself for my cop-out) make a musical for whatever the next competetion is? Hell... if I can figure out a good one, I might.

See, I kinda disagree about "Action" not being about style. You can have a movie all about guns, cars, and girls and if you shoot it in a certain style it'll be a drama rather than an action movie. Action has the implication that you're asking the audience to feel a certain way (i.e. excited, adrenaline-puched, etc.) and I think 60+ films all asking us to feel the same basic set of emotions will get kinda painful.

We sure didn't have that problem with sci-fi (Can you believe we got Synthetic Love, We Are Not Alone, and Green Means Go all in the same fest?) and I don't think we'd have that problem with noir, or even Romance.

I jumped in way too late for the sci fi fest and want to get in on one of these soon!

Romance is kinda eh though. I think something like mystery or action could turn out quite interesting, plus I'm sure we'd get to see lots of big explosions. And honestly, who doesn't like explosions?

If someone were to make an wild guess when would they say the next one would begin? I don't even know when sci fi fest ended so I'm kinda in the dark here.

If we really want to see everyone's imagination run wild,
but still want to see some sort of thread tying these all together,
then why not do something THEME based insteadd of GENRE based?

For example - short films about 'communication' or 'transportation' or ....
just about anything you can think of....

'marriage'
'family'
'full time jobs'

I realize those aren't exactly Themes in and of themselves...but they are topics for themes.
You could take any one topic and do a short in just about any style you want.

just a thought.

I kinda like the idea of themes over genres, myself. I think something that determines a small amount of content allows ore freedom than something which carries as much baggage as "action", or "noir" either.
