Too Early?

I haven't read every post so may have been suggested already... Maybe a poll that runs for awhile on next fest and let the gang decide by vote.

yea, it still requires acting even if no dialogue, but i was thinking more about just the action, it's a lot easier than pulling off convincing dialogue, imo. it has been in my experience, anyway.

dakota, when you say 'a poll that runs for awhile' are you talking like 24 hours? I'm ready to start now.

BTW, I'm all for a no-dialogue movie. There are LOTS of different angles that could be taken. And like has been said, it would eliminate 'bad dialogue' all together.

Maybe a no actor movie...then we could eliminate 'bad acting' all together. :D J/K :D

Seriously, though, when is the next fest gonna start? There was only like a month break between Zombiefest and the beginning of Sci-fest, right?

i'm not sure if this has been done before but...

how about a shorter contest this time (i'm sure everyone is tired after sci-fest)

something like a month to make a music video.
mods would make a list of like 50 songs to choose from (that way we have some variety without it getting out of hand)
can't be a video already made for a recording artist.
has to be original.

I think I fully support "Noir". Like sci-fi, that's something that can be interpreted in a lot of ways. Style, content, dialogue... any number of things can really make something noir-y enough. I think Zombies worked well just because zombies are endlessly amusing, but just picking something like "pirates!" or "ninja!" every month will probably get kinda old. Yes, it's great to see how creative people can get with these things, but at the same time in every movie you end up waiting for the ninja to show up. In these sci-fi flicks, my favorite thing was that I very often had no idea where it was going or even what the "gimmick" was gonna be. Keeing it to broader genre or theme elements appeals to me, personally, as a viewer.

Instead of pitching ideas around all day, would it be OK to go ahead and make a poll?

Film-noir, Romance, Silent, War, Comedy, Prop-based, No-cuts (single take), One-Script-For-All, Spy/Thriller, Mockumentary...Anything else we NEED on the poll? What should be taken off? Remember, we'll be doing more fests in the future!

I would to for an ACTION FEST.
And action means:
- guns
- cars
- and girls.

What else could be better in this world? ;]

I'd rather see everyone toss around ideas in this thread than a poll, because I like hearing the angles here. I have some pretty big doubts about noir for the simple fact that almost every noir short I've seen unintentionally lapses into self parody. Noir really requires some great acting to not come off as amateurish and silly. But as mentioned, who's to say you can't use a noir style for just about any project?

Maybe we need a break from genre? Before we started doing genres, we had some interesting short films that didn't really fall into any categories.

I think that's the biggest reason I like the noir idea. I think a lot of people will interpret "noir" as purely stylistic, in which case they can have fun with it any way they like. I mean, some people may think about it purley in terms of dialogue, some people purely in terms of lighting, hell, other could just play with the gender roles. I don't think you need every element for it to qualify.

In a way I think "Action" is a lot more limiting than "Noir". After all, we've only got five or six minutes. I just think we'd end up seeing a whole lot of chases, shoot-outs, and explosions that lacked a proper emotional context to have impact. And if action movies have taught me anything, it's that when they get it wrong they're among the most boring movies in the world.

That said, I could totally get behind Romance.

i think jarred should throw all these ideas into a big hat, and have his lady pick one out, and we go with whatever it is.
