To 7D or not to 7D?

Let me know when any shoestring budget dslr feautre gets picked up for 1.5mil an we can talk.
Give it some time. 35mm adapters been around for many years. The 5Dll....just over a year. But I get your point. I mean...if I were given a 1.5 million dollar budget...as much as I love my 7D...I'd have to reconsider.

id buy a hpx300 or 500 with relay and letus ultimate with that 1.5 m :D

to kennon
7d produces beautiful imges no doubt but technically it doesnt have high standards as a video cam. the only advantage 7D has is: DOF & low light.

Haha. Didn't say MADE for 1.5Mil... said SOLD.

Everyone's talking about this revolution, it was a while back. Please, for the love of gawd, go and watch THE SIGNAL.

The people who shot that traversed these very same boards. XL-H1 (yes, CANON) and a 35mm Adapter (mini35 for crying out loud.)

HDV!!!

There are a lot of pros over a 35mm adapter. Overall image quality and fidelity are not one of them. Deny it if you want, it is what it is.

I stil haven't seen much more than a handful of worthwhile
dslr shorts. There are plenty and many awesome looking 35mm adapter projects.

It hasn't been around long enough yet... not to mention, people WILL make a lot of money on films shot on these. You'd be ignorant to think otherwise. I know people already making lots of money using them.

Why does everyone get so angry when their beloved HVX / HPX is under fire? I PROMISE you films will be released that were shot on these cameras, and they WILL look nice. Look at the crappy films that are done on lesser cameras and released.

Boy, that's an incredible naive and fantastic statement... But, okay!

Who's angry??? And, what crappy films on lesser cameras that have been released?

You cant say that the 7D can't look professional. Seriously. I have a whole rig for it and it looks more professional than any other prosumer cam I've owned or seen. If a client is judging you off of what your camera looks like, not your work... then thats sad. You should be judged on your work, they should see that long before they see what you're shooting with anyway. To say the DVX trumps it... thats just the stupidest thing I've heard, seriously. Its a solid SD camera, but you can't be serious that it would beat the 7D with a nice rig and Zoom H4n.

Try and record something over 12 minutes, then tell me how the DVX could never trump it. Going into an uncontrolled run and gun situation I am choosing my DVX EVERYDAY over my 7D. But I like to get constant, repeatable, quick results I can stake my reputation on. Every tool has it's place.

And I never said anything about the look of a 7D rig. I was making reference to the fact that I know what any actual camera is going to give me in terms of usable footage every time I use it. Situation dependent the 7D can crap all over your love affair with it at really any time. I don't want to have to explain why the one chance or very expensive footage my clients wanted looks like sh*t when they are the ones keeping my heat running.

Then again, someone above me put it how I see it. I want to learn to shoot more like professionals do - using interchangeable lenses and having to sync audio up later.

That's fine. I like to make shooting as easy as possible

I knew it was the right choice for me and anyone looking to become involved in short films, music videos, cleanly produced interviews... etc.

If they are your productions and you are happy fine. Everyone has different needs.

I like KennonF's fire..!!!

...take note of the handle..."KennonF"....give it a few years....and he'll be mentioning this thread while accepting one of his multiple Oscars. KennonF....just don't forget us small people...and remember...."I was on your side!" :)

Hmmmm... I have to say, after reading all this and studying 7D footage online, it very well might be that the reason it (and the 5D footage) looks so sharp is partly an illusion based on very shallow depth of field.

If the numbers are what they are, then it's something else that gives the impression of higher resolution which is more than likely the higher comparative difference between sharpness and lack of sharpness as in the case of shooting with a big sensor camera with a very fast lens.

Just sayin'...

.

I was also in a similar situation, except I had JVC HD100/200+35mm adapter also with NIKON mount lenses.

I got a 7D & went with nikon to canon adapters on my nikons and sigmas. The only canon mount lens i got was a wide 11-16 f2.8 tokina.

Its like a yoke was taken off me and my grips' shoulders. Everything is now lightweight.

Here's a tourism video I did all with 7D.

Bantayan Island

The codec when transcoded to an intermediate codec (i used HQ) handled grading and compositing. But then I also did that with hdv codec.

Great video...what adapter did you get for using the Nikon lenses on the Canon 7D?

Nah...as Barry suggested...it's aliasing that does it. There's the good type and the nasty type. That's why he called it false sharpening (or something like that). But..whatever...I love these images. It still resolves better than SD (if even barely)...but the aliasing effect (the good one that is) helps it in the sharpness area. Other than that it's overall image is what I like. If anything I think the main area to be concerned with is wide open shots. I've had just a few issues with aliasing (no moire yet) but...it is possible to get some beautiful wide open shots.

I will be making my speech right after you, IanT. hahah

but seriously, with this whole argument aside. I like the 7D, I like what it does, the truth is, is that it is just as good as if not better than most of the cameras on the market right now. There are points to both sides of the argument but you have to ask yourself, why are so many professional DP's selling away their HVX and shooting 100% on the 7D? They're coming up with beautiful imagery... and its a lot easier to achieve, you have to admit.

Naive and fantastic?

It's not naive at all, it is a FACT that there are people making a lot of money just by owning one of these. There is a slew of people shooting expensive looking wedding videos for around $10,000 three or four times per month... tell me that isn't making serious money off of a sort of inexpensive camera... Calling me naive was a bit rude, and unjustified. It is a fact that people are making money on it... including myself...

Crank 2 was shot on the XHA1-S and HV20 or HF10... both are equal or lesser cameras. No 35 adapters from what I remember reading.. and it wasn't necessarily crappy, just ... shot on lesser cameras. You cannot possibly tell me that low bit rate of mini-dv based hdv is better than the 7D...

The people (Stillmotion.ca for example) have been doing it much longer than before DSLRs came around. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CAMERA. They could rock 35mm Adapters and STILL get paid just as much. The Cameras have just probably made their jobs a bit easier.

It's naive to think that just because you get a camera you're going to make "a lot of money". Not unless you're an early RED ONE reservation holder for several reasons.

Lesser camera? An XH-A1 resolves more than any crap DSLR video out right now.

Second, CRANK 2... Jason Stathom... that isn't shoestring independent. That was a firm choice by director and director of photography to shoot with those cameras. That's because they could break them at will because they were so cheap.

I don't know what you do, haven't seen your work, but even YOU said if someone is hiring you for your camera then something's wrong. You're contradicting yourself every time you post.

But..whatever...I love these images.

I agree. I'm not making movies about charts or cards or grids. The image looks GREAT. It achieves what I want. It holds up in Color. And if I do my job right and create an entertaining story, then hopefully no one will care if I shoot on a 7D or Red One or a cell phone.

You mad bro?

People ARE making money by owning the 7D. There is no doubt. Just like people owning other professional cameras are making money. Maybe you are mis-interpreting what I am saying.

When my film is done I will let you see it. If it doesn't help earn respect from you for the 7D, then I don't know what to tell you. There are some great films shot on it out there, and just because people haven't seen more than a few web shorts shot on it DOES NOT mean that its ALL that can be shot on it.

I never said Crank 2 was a shoestring independent did I? The XHA1 is NOT better than the 7D. HDSLR's are not crap. You're just being rude and close minded. Not everyone can afford to brag about their RED ONE in their signature... lol
Som how bout you let someone whos only 22 (and just getting started with their own business) do what they can with the best tools available to them without pissing all over them? I was fair with the things I said, saying that the HVX and HPX were good cameras but I would much prefer the sharpness of the 7D over it and if I was given a choice to shoot a film on one or the other I would hands down use the 7D. Plenty of other people would say the same thing, but on this forum is like me going into a Honda forum and saying "Volkswagens are better"

I made my decision to sell my HVX200 because it was garbage image quality compared to my 7D. No question about it. I can achieve a nice DoF shot with a great lens in the matter of seconds as opposed to minutes or longer on a 35mm adapter setup.

I have comparison footage, showed plenty of people that I work with and just people I know, and the 7D was the "oh my god that is way better" image. I don't care if its "falsely" sharper, if it looks sharper then it IS sharper to the majority of the public. We're in a new age of web based video, and I'm tired of hearing people say "well how will it hold up on a 40 foot screen?" *which by the way, Philip Bloom says it works out just fine haha

well - lets be honest. you and I aren't shooting for a 40 foot screen, and if we were actually succeeding at that we wouldn't be on these forums trolling around. we're shooting for corporate clients and other low budget things, so I don't know why anyone would act like "oh thats a shoestring crap production" or "you shoot with a crappy hdslr" because like I said, face it - we're not shooting in Hollywood on big budget movies.

One last time, back to the naive comment. You're the naive one for thinking that someone like me is going to take what you're saying and be super angry about it and give up, or suddenly think "oh no I won't ever succeed!" That's not the case at all, I know that a film can be shot on the 7D and it will be done at some point.

Agreed - It's seriously not about what you shoot on most of the time, it's the content. The 7D creates a nice image to look at, undoubtedly so.

You mad bro?

Haha~ Nice.

People ARE making money by owning the 7D. There is no doubt. Just like people owning other professional cameras are making money. Maybe you are mis-interpreting what I am saying.
I am misinterpreting what you're saying. Doesn't make sense.

When my film is done I will let you see it. If it doesn't help earn respect from you for the 7D, then I don't know what to tell you. .
Huh? Respect for the 7D?

I never said Crank 2 was a shoestring independent did I?
I have no idea why you brought it up... I just wanted to remind you that it cost several million to produce.

The XHA1 is NOT better than the 7D
Okay.

HDSLR's are not crap. You're just being rude and close minded.
And...

Not everyone can afford to brag about their RED ONE in their signature... lol
There are probably not a lot of people on here that can afford to post pictures of themselves with a full blown DSLR rig... your point being?

Som how bout you let someone whos only 22 (and just getting started with their own business) do what they can with the best tools available to them without pissing all over them?
When did age come into this? You know there's a fifteen year old guy in the Gh-1 forums? ... His work rocks.

I was fair with the things I said, saying that the HVX and HPX were good cameras...
You mean you've been telling everyone they're angry over the "fact" that the 7D is a better camera? Okay...

but I would much prefer the sharpness of the 7D over it and if I was given a choice to shoot a film on one or the other I would hands down use the 7D. [
Finally a logical statement.

I made my decision to sell my HVX200 because it was garbage image quality compared to my 7D. No question about it. I can achieve a nice DoF shot with a great lens in the matter of seconds as opposed to minutes or longer on a 35mm adapter setup.
Yes, you can throw things out of focus at will with a DSLR. It can come in handy, indeed. And, yes, the HVX200 image quality isn't really all of that. You're not exactly unearthing anything that we all didn't already know... from the time the original HVX200 was released.

Yeah, this forum was here at that time...

I have comparison footage, showed plenty of people that I work with and just people I know, and the 7D was the "oh my god that is way better" image. I don't care if its "falsely" sharper, if it looks sharper then it IS sharper to the majority of the public.
Well, what you care about is fiction over fact. That's fine, now that it's acknowledged we can all go back to shooting. Oh, wait... no... we're not doing that.

We're in a new age of web based video, and I'm tired of hearing people say "well how will it hold up on a 40 foot screen?" *which by the way, Philip Bloom says it works out just fine haha
Web based video? Speak for yourself. I'm gad that Philip says it'll hold up... So will HVX200 footage. I've seen my HVX200 + Redrock (OMFG YEAH REDROCK) footage blown up in the Kodak Theater... the quality has been here and gone.

well - lets be honest. you and I aren't shooting for a 40 foot screen
Speak for yourself.

Depends on what you call "low budget" and what you consider "corporate clients".

=T Anger... What does the 7D have to do with you succeeding? If you're relying on the camera that much... well, fruit is sweet and sometimes bees get caught in my eyelids.

I have both a HPX 170 and a 7D...Filmed on both at the same time....the 7D smokes the panasonic...
