To 7D or not to 7D?

Great video...what adapter did you get for using the Nikon lenses on the Canon 7D?

Thanks,
I dunno what brand, probably from china, It was on the counter display when I got it, the box was plain all white.
It costs around $40 US, based on forex at that time I bought it. Its stainless metal finish. I got 3, mounted permanently on my lenses.

I like how this thread is basically a bunch of white-hot arguments punctuated by other people having a totally separate conversations about videos they're shooting and how they did it... well, at least teddybear and izoneguy are anyway :D

 We're not here to argue but share.. I hate to apply my confucian philosophy in arguments.. and that philosophy is, "if you can't convince them, -confuse them!" LOL:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Wow did I catalyze a fire!

I just wanted to know if I should drop the A1/SGBlade set up NOW for a 7D(specifically).
Or should I wait and see.

There's a lot of fuss on here about the HVX. I want to know about the CANON XH-A1 WITH A 35MM ADAPTER.

I would just like to know if I should hold onto my set up a little longer. I know the 7D and the rest of the HDSLRs, and RED with Scarlet (for that matter) are things to come.

I just want to know RIGHT NOW, should I stick with it or migrate to 7D.

Thanks guys, and didn't mean this to turn into some huge fiasco.

scenedirector,

i checked on your first post and didnt seem to see, probably missed it, what you do mainly.
You do events? or short story narrative stuff?

How big is your crew when you usually do your work? Or are you usually a one man operation?

If you do events, and you can't keep th other cam, then stick with your setup for a awhile. If you do shorts, corporate and narrative, go with 7D.

If you like to work light or even solo, go with 7D. Your current rig is ok if you have assistants most of the time.

I have usually assistants but still decided to go 7D, since my current setup is more than a meter long since I use a JVChd200 with adapter. Your A1 + adapter is shorter and lighter. Maybe its manageable for you.

Its really all up to you in the end. Both solutions have pros and cons. Right now, for the work i do, its a lil bit more pros for the 7D. Yours could be different.

also , let me add that the moire/aliasing problem on the 7D, doesnt just show up in charts and roof shingles.

Heres some more real world scenarios.

Palm leaves.
wide shot of the sea, -in the repetitive wave patterns.
boardwalk planks.
stairways.
and so on.
if you can't take dodging these things, stick to your current setup for a while till the technology catches up.

No I'm not kidding you.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) and the only brands That I am and will ever be Loyal to are Nike and Prada (Shoes), I could care less about staying with Panasonic. The camera was just was not to my taste. I'm sure I will grab the next Gen when it drops because god knows the HVX is getting pretty long-in-the-tooth.

But I do have to say that video looks damn good.

If the numbers are what they are, then it's something else that gives the impression of higher resolution
The numbers are what they are, and there's definitely a factor that is giving the impression of very much higher resolution, yes. It's called aliasing, and it's false detail in the image. It contributes a lot to how the 7D looks, it makes it look much sharper than it actually is, but it also causes the moire and rainbow patterns too.

the truth is, is that it is just as good as if not better than most of the cameras on the market right now.
That is not the truth.

why are so many professional DP's selling away their HVX and shooting 100% on the 7D?
Name one please? One professional DP who's shooting exclusively on the 7D?

They're coming up with beautiful imagery... and its a lot easier to achieve, you have to admit.
Capable of beautiful imagery, yes, absolutely. Easier to achieve, not really. In a one-man-band environment, maybe. With a crew, no, not really.

The 7D has two huge advantages, and only these two huge advantages: cheap cost and shallow DOF. In every other category, the conventional professional video camera wins.

Gotcha. But I really do also think that people are seeing these online clips shot with insanely shallow DoF and there's an illusion of heightened resolution because of it.

Entirely possible. And, frankly, the cameras do perform better when there's less in focus, because that makes it easier on the compression system, so what's in focus can be resolved cleaner. Where they kind of fall down is in wide shots, with everything in focus.

Barry, would it be fair to say that you might be a little bias when it comes to comparing an HVX or HPX to a $1,700 Picture camera? Considering you sell books that offer your expertise exclusively in these cameras, I would think the 7D poses a significant threat to you.

Okay KennonF, here's an oldie but goodie:

Three cameras. One is the 7D in video mode, one is the 7D in still-camera mode, and one is a 1/4" CMOS video camera. You pick which is which, and maybe we'll be able to get to the bottom of this "perception vs. reality" thing once and for all.

I just edited a commercial shot on a Sony EX1. And I could've shot it better with the 7d. Yes, the EX1 is sharper, easier to use and better suited for documentaries but still. I would've traded it's videolike image to the one from 7d in a heartbeat.

The 7d is no slouch even though it's not tack sharp.

Though a couple of weeks ago we did a 3d music video where the EX1 really shined.

And that's a perfectly reasonable viewpoint, and I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. The only reason this discussion is happening is to counteract some assertions about factual correctness. Aesthetically, yes, the 7D can do a gorgeous job and can look better than more-expensive cameras in many circumstances.

And I own both the HVX and 7D, so what would my bias be?
