The Vintage Lens Thread

+1 for the Mir 24. All in all a great lens especially for the price.
The Pentax is also supposed to be very good altough it will be more expensive.
The Vivitar has a lot of glow wide open.

I got the Takumar smc 35/2 for 80 Euros :)
Let's see how it performs, apparently it has a little scratch on the front lens! I love the look of the Mir but people charge way too much money for it nowadays!

+1 on the Vivitar- I've found myself not using my 28mm 2.0 Vivitar so often these days, because I have to stop it down to F/3+ to avoid excessive softness. I do own a 17-55mm Tamron that wide open at 2.8 seems as sharp (if not sharper) than the Vivitar at 2.8, which means it gets left in my bag far more often.

Maybe I should sell it off and try a more interesting wide prime?

I also own the Tamron and I wonder if I'll make use of the 35mm a lot. I've just been using the 50 mm Takumar so much that i hope to have the same experience with the 35mm
For some reason I don't like the tamron zoom that much! the warmness and the bokeh just look way better on the takumar!

I'm a newbie to the DSLR game with the latest T3i and my dads old Nikkor AF 600mm f5.6 ED. I have been getting some jaw dropping footage with this setup at incredible distances. I would suggest that this fits the catagory of a "great" vintage lens :)

Cheers,
Pete

Nice.

I also agree this thread is awfully long, but it is a rather broad subject.

Id suggest there be a vintage lens subsection, but I don't think there's THAT much to say... still, this should at least be stickied IMO.

Here's the low dollar question for the day.

I'm cruising the pawn shops looking for the $58 canon L glass but they were out. So I see a 50 mm Minolta MD 2.0 with a 49mm front end for $9. It's in great shape, lens looks good, and the focus throw is about 180 smooth degrees which I like. I figure for $9, what the hell. I get home and do a little research and find it's a post 1981 lens and you can indeed get a Minolta MD to Canon EOS adapter for about $40. That will put me at $50 total investment if I buy the adapter. Anyone ever use one of these? I thought at the time I was gonna be able to pick up an adapter for $15 or so, but another $40 for an adapter for glass I don't need, well just curious if I should spend the money or just chuck it in the garbage........

Something you could use on a FF? or just a crop cam like my 60D?

The adapter has glass in it. This will result in a noticeable loss of light (kills any benefit of open aperture) and loss of infinity focus.

In all seriousness i agree<this thread is definitely Stickie worthy!

MD lenses on EOS now possible!!!

MD lenses on EOS now possible!!!

and into the garbage it goes........ I could have spent that $9 on ice cream, damn......
Not anymore!!!

I have just read about a solution to use Minolta MD lenses on your EOS bodies without the need of extra glass in the adaptor and/or the need to modify the lens mount: The EOS-MD flange.
It is a reversible modification of the camera mount that enables you to directly adapt MD lenses and/or M42 lenses with an M42 to MD adaptor.
Very interesting for video shooters!

Had a chance to try out a 1990's Olympus Zuiko 50mm F1.8 lens on the T3i. Wow!!! It is an amazingly sharp lens. In any case another possibly super inexpensive one to look out for.

Cheers,
Pete

My 1991 MIR 24N arrived today ($107 delivered). The video was shot on a T2i using a Fotodiox M42 to EOS adaptor. I'm looking forward to use this lens more!

Very nice looking footage and a great price for that lens! Makes me want to take mine out of retirement for some upcoming shoots.

Think I got a good deal on this Yashica 75-150mm F4 lens for $30?
