Disclaimer: I get all of my information from diggin' through trash.

Do you hint of this being one of these rare cases when it actually is groundbreaking? I don't consider BMDCC to be groundbreaking anymore because that camera lacks many things and I didn't consider the FS700 to be. But Canons 5Dmk2 was just that thanks to video from a full frame sensor. Something we never saw before. Will this be something we never seen before?

I like to think big but realistically I have a hard time to do that. I do hope I'm wrong and if I were to think BIG that would equal an affordable camera as the most important feature!

Well, there's KIND of an issue with the word groundbreaking in a creative field... for instance, you don't feel that Blackmagic's camera's ground breaking. After having it in my hands and just doing some off-the-cuff randomness, I must disagree with you. And, yeah, it is all because of the price, really... to follow...

A truly filmic, uncompressed RAW camera with 13 stops of DR, for $3000 is not ground breaking?

It's pretty ground breaking, once you have it in your hands and when you see one of those shots that you just know any sub 15K (launch price) camera should not be doing.

But, do I consider what Sony's about to announce ground breaking? I believe that for Sony, if everything that I know is absolutely true, it will be ground-breaking for them. It sure is pretty... and, like Barry, I'll probably finally become a Sony fan. Also, not wantin' to sound like a conspiracy theorist...

That's exactly my point. I don't think the C500 or Sony's upcoming competitor to it (just my theory, I admit) are really Epic competitors and I don't think either would affect scare Red into price changes.

But, to think that the price drop of RED's primary two toys occurring in the same time frame that Sony's about to show their hand for their future (ahead of schedule TEE HEE) is kind of... naive. The guys over at RED enjoy tactical warfare, regardless of how much they sell their kids for, how many people they make happy-mad-or-sad, or how far they have reached into the industry they STILL consider themselves underdogs.

Underdogs with loud barks and bites like that team, they hear that someone's trying to pee on their tree and they go to remark their territory.

This wasn't meant to be disrespectful. I shoot RED, Epic is pretty amazeinsane, it's one of the top three cams I'd choose to shoot as of today--tomorrow is likely to add a fourth*. And that's why...

I believe we are about to see something from Sony which will provide tremendous market interest which will be good for us. Nothing is perfect and we will all have criticisms. Red's introduction of Scarlet and the pending price drop of Epic is good for us. BM Cinema Camera is good for us.

Whenever I'm able to get on line during what will possibly be a protracted power outage, I will be interested in hearing objective opinions after Tuesday morning-- not fanboy and not cynical.

Awaiting the brunt of Sandy...

Ned

I'm tryin' to stand with Ned and Barry, likely overshadowed by their presences but definitely sharing the same forward-looking sentiments.

Blackmagic must be in my arsenal, once you get over the fact that it's definitely the Weird Kid On the Block (explain this one later) I really don't think there's anything out there like it... well, aside from Alexa right now. =P Gun fight it is, and gun they have brought; crotch gun, like from that one movie with the vampires and that famous guy in all the movie films.

What's it called?

From Dusk 'Til Dawn.

I'm confused, is the crotch gun the BMCC or the new Sony?

Does anyone know if Sony will be showing this/these new camera(s) at Createsphere? It's the only industry show right after the announcement so I thought it may be a good place to show it for the LA crowd, and I will be there so that would be useful.

Adding: After shooting the first feature that used the F3, I like what Sony is doing and did with that camera, and look forward to a more professional version. We decided against a red for many reasons on that film and I continue to worry ever time I have to use one of their systems. The F3 we had always came on, instantly, never did anything weird, was light weight, lasted a long time on a battery and shot in super low light conditions. For people also doing work that needs instant turn-around or leaving files on site, it works for that perfectly too. The KiPro mini was my only complaint to get 10bit so dumping external recording will be a very welcome change. Also, I sat in on an F65 screening recently and its the king right now, as far as what its giving you. I still like film for higher-end work but Sony is still setting the bar in many ways in the pro world. Remember, they started all of this back with the F900 before anyone else even knew what 24p HD was, not to mention their involvement with the Genesis.

It's a great concept yes but still lacks lots of stuff to qualify to be groundbreaking in my book. A camera on the other hand that gives me something I never could imagine and after that I would ask myself - how could I live without it? Now, that's groundbreaking!

Hours keep ticking. Soon we'll know...
