The New F

This is an instance where I'm not inclined to take Phillip Bloom's word as the gospel. He's a shooter, yes, but he's also essentially a tech blogger, and best as I can tell, in this case he's just repeating rumor. Even Ned, who was under NDA has indicated that Sony's not released *any* pricing info.

Right now, the person who probably has the best idea about the "New F" pricing is Jim Jannard. Whatever price he announces for the EPIC is what Sony's going to have to beat.

You're so right, RED will play a HUGE role in shaping the prices of the F5 / F55. Having said that, Sony must have taken that into a account when they designed the F5/F55.

They must have designed them to have price flexibility to go up against a reaction from RED. The wildcard is the FS700, with the same sensor, and therefore same potential in performance but at a lower price point.

So they could further elevate their NEX line to a performance/price that can go up against RED's price reduction while protecting their Cinealta series.

It's interesting how RED spins their price cut as a benevolent thing when this is just normal procedure in electronics. Every single electronics manufacturer starts off with a high price and then lowers it over time, mostly due to market pressure and reduced demand. The iPhone, iPad, laptops, GPS, TVs, Playstations...every single thing gets a price cut after a while.

But if we look at the Epic, it actually had a 23% price INCREASE just 11 months ago on Jan 1. It went from $28K to $34.5K. So even if RED cuts the price by 23% tomorrow and they look like heroes to some, in reality it will have just gone back to the original price!

Why do people think Cooke had anything to do with these lenses? Sony has been making lenses for years. They bought Minolta. They don't need Cooke to do it.
Well, if I was Sony's PR advisor I might start rumour that my new lenses were designed and built by Cooke - sounds a lot cooler than a rebadged Minolta don't you think:)

Incase anyone missed the chat today with Sony, I hacked into the Sony Headquarters database and pulled off a transcript of today's amazing chat.

I don't know how long it will be there until I am summoned to remove it and they find my secret hiding location... but please do enjoy it while it lasts.

in the case of the F5, the only "affordable", non PL mount is the FZ mount- as a canon still lens user, the Red Canon mount is just absolutely brilliant, even better than the one on the C300 in Functionality...

Two questions.
The Metabones EF adapter cost $400...that's very affordable, no?
What makes the Red Canon mount more functional than Canon's dedicated mount for it's lenses?

I repeat. No prices yet. Not to me either on or off record. Not to any journalist. Lenses are Sony. Not Cooke.

I do not know what Red will do tomorrow but we will find out soon enough.

Ned

Agreed. Lets keep the discussion in the other thread so we dont have to look in two places.
