Any word on price? Are they likely to compete with CP.2s price-wise?

No word. But lets be honest, you get what you pay for so will be interesting to see. Roks are best buy going but for me not without 50mm and lenses longer than 85mm.

Awaiting the brunt of Sandy...

Ned

Hi Ned. I'm only about 5 hours from you in beautiful (but windy) Vermont and my generator is gassed up and ready to go. Why don't grab your preproduction camera Sony lent you and come on up? :D

But seriously, thanks for all you contribute to this forum. Stay safe. Stay dry.

Funny how for Sony that probably would be "going out on a limb" but YES very doable to offer internal recording at 50mbps for HD, and 220mbps for 4k. With these features alone I feel TheNewF will FLY off the shelves and stand to be a very good all around purpose S35 camera with ample flexibility. Go Sony go!

Where I predict it will lack (and have been ranting about) is in the 4k RAW department as just like its older and younger siblings it will surely require an external deck to record 4k. Whether that's $6k to $10k or even more, sure it won't deter rental houses or "big budget" productions from going that route (like they do with the F65) but from where I'm sitting and for my needs I'd sooner put that cash towards the slew of discounted RED cameras available on the market which can simply record 16-bit RAW internal on reasonably priced media.

But hey, even though this is a "filmmakers" forum and my primary needs are for cinematic projects, I do realize I'm in the minority group here.

I agree except... what if it works with a $4000 Ki Pro Quad? Or some even cheaper Blackmagic 4K Shuttle thing to be announced in the future?

Also, what if their media costs less than RED's media? RED's media is extremely expensive for the performance (which most consumer SSD drives can match these days).

Even Sony's F65 media is cheaper:
1 TB SR25 - $5700

1 TB of REDMAGS - $9100

All true very enough.

Man, for people who want everything for nothing you guys sure think small.

>:P

Seldom do we see something truly groundbreaking in price/performance/features so I can only count on that Sony are like most and just puts a couple of new things in a new line.

Do you hint of this being one of these rare cases when it actually is groundbreaking? I don't consider BMDCC to be groundbreaking anymore because that camera lacks many things and I didn't consider the FS700 to be. But Canons 5Dmk2 was just that thanks to video from a full frame sensor. Something we never saw before. Will this be something we never seen before?

I like to think big but realistically I have a hard time to do that. I do hope I'm wrong and if I were to think BIG that would equal an affordable camera as the most important feature!

But look at 256GB or 512GB media:

256GB
$1500 for 1.5Gbps 256GB Sony media, $4200 for 5.5Gbps
$2450 for 256GB RED 1.8".

512GB
$4200 for 2.5Gbps 512GB Sony media, $6000 for 512GB 5.5Gbps
$4000 for 512GB RED 1.8"

And again what's it worth not to have to record off-board?

But then again, what's it worth not to have built-in ND, XLR, amazingly high and super clean ISO, etc.. etc..

Man this is getting more and more interesting day by day....

I agree neither BMC, Bolex D16, or FS700 are groundbreaking but man we sure are spoiled as hell in this era.

In 24 hours we will have the truth and I'll know if Sony gets another $$$$$$ from my pocket.

Yes and we'll know if I go from owning 2 cameras to 3, or 2 camera to 1

I'm spoiled for sure but will probably never be satisfied. The only strange thing I don't care much for 4K. I'd rather take the best 1080p in high fps on the planet than a camera that half asses 1080 and 4K in the same camera.

A truly filmic, uncompressed RAW camera with 13 stops of DR, for $3000 is not ground breaking?

It was intriguing at first and it's a great camera but not groundbreaking if I consider performance/features/price because it lacks many things I find essential.

Depends which side of $3000 you're on. Most of us here are F3 owners and have been playing in that pool for a while now. Some of us, for years.

I'm not sure how that matters..... What about people who paid $100ks for an F35... Only cameras of equal cost could then be considered ground breaking?

Ned, maybe you can post your story early to avoid the disruptions caused by the power outage.
