C200: The new Canon C200 with 4K

I "believe" Sony is close to release on an 8K (4K recording format) cam based on the F65's chip, but updated, with a revised internal compressed codec, 16 bit X-OCN raw, similar form factor and market to the F55, not in the same market as the upcoming Varicam. Priced around what the F55 is now - around 30K for the body. I haven't heard when it's going to be announced. Possibly after Cinegear, but hell, with Canon and Panasonic releasing cameras there already, it's going to be a packed zoo there this year.

Geoff Boyle said that most camera manufaturers are shifting towards CineGear, and away from NAB. It makes sense, as NAB has become more and more saturated, and probably harder to get attention for your own big announcement if it's happening in the midst of so many other ones. But with the internet the trades shows make less and less sense for actual announcements, they're only relevant if you're busy hyping your camera up but not if you're close to release, where you might as well hold a private launch like Sony did for the FS7II.

It makes some sense for the "cinema" stuff to be unveiled in LA rather than in Vegas, considering that Hollywood is (geographically and spiritually) closer to LA than to Vegas.

Or maybe it's some sort of a corporate upsmanship between the gear manufacturers and broadcasters. For a consumer perspective, it makes more sense to have one big bowl of stew regardless of location.

And sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Maybe companies just weren't ready to announce at NAB, but were able to get far enough along to do so at CineGear. I know for a fact that last year at NAB 2016 there were a several lens manufacturers who had been preparing to show new gear but just couldn't get product ready in time so instead showed at IBC 2016 about 5 months later. It's just the way things work sometimes.

They're in a weird position, where it doesn't make too much sense to make a new camera because it's hard to find a way to make the F55 significantly better than it already is, while they're probably making more of an actual profit off FS7s and such. Since the F35 they've flopped on the high end a few times, neither the F65 nor F55 were able to dethrone Sony, RED or Canon in their respective markets. I could see them trying to make something special, and push the envelope, but how exactly? An FF sensor? 8k? Dual ISO?

F65 is a feature film level camera with some odd caveats in its workflow. Eliminate the caveats, drop the price and it could be a big winner. Sony's Cine Alta line is around six years old and has very little presence in TV (dominated by Alexa) or film.

But, at the moment, Sony's major earner FS-7 is also facing serious competition and the company hasn't released a model that combined its top "consumer" features (auto focus, low light/high ISO performance) with whatever is the rage for pros.

Back on point, besides CFast, what other recording media exists that would make sense for a C200 that probably has to shoot 4K 60p? Don't the inexpensive Canon XC10/15 also record to CFast? Canon is a good company to look at existing lines for clues, they are generally not chance takers or innovators when it comes to the EOS C line, it sounds as if the new camera will use CFast, like it or not. Of course, it could be very compressed 4K and possibly fit a 100 Mbps stream onto SDXC cards? But since the $2,400.00 XC15 shoots a 305 Mbps codec to CFast for 4K, I would expect this new camera to at least meet this spec and hopefully to beat it.

Yea, it's either CFast or SDXC (maybe UHS-II).

They have 5 different CFast models now, and probably have been working on this new one for the last year or two, so not expecting anything new.

I was at one of the 'large motorsports events' going on today and I walked in and sat my C300 w/17-120 down on a table so I could talk to some friends before I left(lucky me not having to stay to the end). It was in front of where Canon/CPS was set-up and a rep walked up, looked at my rig and simply said, "Watch the website the day after tomorrow", which will be Tuesday.

I "think" (therefore I post) that CFast cards present a "pro gear" image, while SD cards are confined to the "consumer" portion of the market despite being capable of the 305 Mbps bit rate with plenty of room to spare (V60 rated cards @ 420 Mbps).

But Canon could surprise with a higher bit rate too.

I can't remember the last time 2 major cinema cameras were announced (with detailed info) at the same time. Probably at a NAB sometime.

I wonder if CR will say anything about it next week.

Canon C300 and Red Scarlet. NAB rarely has camera announcements.

It would make sense that they will be hoping to try and steal some attention from the new varicam announced this Tuesday

Maybe on the right side of the body.

There's a CFast card slot on the left side of the body towards the back!

Unless these are fakes, it is confirmed. The C200 is here. Guess Canon didn't decide to go with the shoulder mounted mini C700 form factor. Bummer. Those of us with Franken rigs will have to still keep using them. Zacuto and Wooden Camera will be happy. I see SDXC slots, nice. It does look like a baby C300 MKII. Look at the second picture. User detachable EVF?!?! That would be a first for Canon. I can't imagine them NOT having HDMI on it but who knows?

I wonder if that monitor is a touchscreen...it looks like it's reinforced well.

And I hope that CFast slot means 4K/60p!

If they would provide MJPEG 800Mbps 4:2:2 8-bit, I would be okay with that. (That's what the 1DX Mark II has via CFast.)
