The Afters - Music Video (7D & t2i)

Wow I first saw this video on Godtube and really liked it, both for its content and quality. Now i like it even more knowing it was shot with a camera I hope to get :)
Good job on the cinematography and the editing. Really superb. A benchmark for me to now pass lol
Any chance you'd tell me what lenses you used for that music video?

i have no audio at work but the image quality and shots were amazing. can't wait to hear what it sounds like once i get home.

and i agree w/ boncrek. videos like these motivate me to continue to be more creative and become better.

great work

the t2i kit lens. a 50mm 1.8, a 100mm tamron lens for some close ups on notes and such to do the rolling focus, and the really WIDE stuff of the band was will a 7mm.

It looks and sounds amazing, man! I just bought a 7D and am pretty stoked to see what other people are doing with it. Was that all shot at 24p?

I thought it was well shot, and thanks for posting. The only thing is, I thought the concept was really literal. Kind of made it feel like a soap opera or something.

Maybe to show the people's grief, if it was shot in more of an abstract way, would have been more interesting.

But overall, nice job. How did you make the voice sync at 60fps? Also, I think you are the first person in history who has succesfully shot an entire project in 60fps using the 7D without terrible Moire. The use of long lenses and shallow DOF probably allowed you to do it.

Didn't have any problem with the 60f actually. It's also the first project I've shot with these cameras so maybe it was beginner's luck! For the lip sync you can here it here in the Making Of video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFqKN3hLgzs.

The way you do it is to speed up the song to 250% so the band is singing/performing 2.5x faster than normal. When played back their performance is matched up. Can be a tad tricky for the band to get comfortable with and still get a good expression. Especially when you have only ONE take at the pyrotechnics at the end!

As for the literal story line. I felt it was an interesting way to "light up the sky" and wanted to tell a piece of interconnecting stories, cross cutting them. It looks like it's getting nominated for video of the year in a few places in the U.S. now (the band is on Columbia Records and the song is number one in some Adult Contemporary charts presently) so I'm resting assured we did good here :)

I thought that was fantastic! Kudos to you! You definitely have something to be proud of!

FWIW: I think The Afters is a great band.

Not only are they a great band, the are fantastic human beings. This is my second music video with them and about to go into a third! Really proud of all their successes and willingness to work in the low budget music video realm and trust my ideas!

Re: The Afters

Nice work. I'm happy to see something other than a rap music video. It all fits together nicely.

I remember seeing a BTS of James Cameron filming the Titanic song with the sped-up audio; thing is, they didn't pitch it back down to normal pitch (where the speed was fast but the pitch was closer to "normal"). Looked like Celine D. was lip synching to the Chipmunks.

I'd disagree with the "too literal" comments personally - though it was too literal for my tastes, I think the market for this music doesn't want a bunch of overtly allegorical/challenging stuff. Keep it clear and simple would have been my choice as well. And trying to get heavy allegory/visual metaphors for a music video can just wear you out. It can be really hard to do and you'll find you wake up at night thinking "man, this is really dumb, what was I thinking" etc.

Pretty footage, framing and grading - the "love songs to jesus" genre just makes me cringe like nothing else so I only made it halfway through!

VERY nice! Thanks for posting! I loved the concept of the video and it's relationship to the song. Did you think up the concept or did they or did you work together on that?....please enlighten us! (again) :)

The concept was mine. I've worked with the band in the past on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WsJvsIwsEU - the guys usually trust my ideas... so I'll come up with a concept to the 90% point and then we'll tweak it here and there. Actors and onset inspiration always up the level of the final video by another 10% too!

Thanks for the response! ...and let me (now) compliment you on your concept...very cool. Kept my attention...and made a nice compliment to a great song. CONGRATS!
